2.9 Rome Pioneer Pale Ale On tap @macchesiete. I don’t think this is a fabulous beer, but it’s certainly something fairly good all in all. Sweet, fruity with a medium carbonation and refreshing. Good IPA having a dark red colour. Nothing special but refreshing and easy to drink. Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Gut! /8/8/7//8 Sunday, July 8, 2012

Corpo medio-basso, leggermente "watery", carbonazione abbondante. Andrebbe rifinita un po’. Thursday, June 21, 2012

2.6 Rome Starbess Strong Ale From tap at the brewpub. Pours almost clear deep orange with a fully diminished off-white head. Sweet corn/hay-ish aroma, brewing cereal. Hayish flavour yet smooth from the alcohol but surely doesnt hold any complexities. Very straight forward and too sweet and cereal-like for my taste. Wednesday, April 9, 2008

3.3 Rome Union Porter From tap at the brewpub, tap, menu and chalkboard mentions this only as Union Porter - Smoked lager was all gone. Pours pitch black with a dense light brown head settling to lasting and nice laces on the glass. Liqourice and light smoked aroma to the roasted malt beneath. Flavour is smooth malty with a nice roasted note and a quite delicate smoke note on top. Surprisingly smooth and light yet still very flavourful. Goes into a strange sweetish finish which sadly ruins the initial great experience. Wednesday, April 9, 2008

3.1 Rome Starbess Strong Ale Draught. Sweet yeasty nose, some sourness. Strawberry esters and some caramel. Nice deep celar amber, almost brown with good head retention and lacing. A bit thin and shallow in flavor, but not bad. Sweet in a malt/fruit sort of way. Wednesday, October 31, 2007

4.4 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Bottle drank in August 2004 with the friendly brewer Mike. Deep amber coloured. Big aroma with loads of malt, fruits and hops. Complex flavour. Sweet and fruity with notes of cascade hops and especially pineapples. Bitter finish. The alcohol is well hidden. Smooth mouthfeel. Full bodied. I tasted another bottle in March 2005 which unfortunately had turned a little bit sour. Monday, April 18, 2005

3.6 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Pours a hazy caramel color with a small head. Heavy aroma of malt, citrus and caramel with hints of stable. Very fruity flavor with malty notes. Orange and pineapple. 3.2 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Dark amber color. The malty aroma (nothing special) shows some infection. Tasting it, it’s no infected; it’s malty, and malty again, and a lot bitter; sweet nuts; too much alcoholic. Really rough! Monday, March 14, 2005

3.2 Rome Pioneer Pale Ale A beer rare to find as the brewery will probably close; brought by Laurent Mousson Hazy copper color; rocky head. 3.9 Rome Starbess Strong Ale An unclear amber beer with a fine lazing white head. The aroma is great: sweet with lots of hops - reminds me a little of an Imperial IPA. The flavor is strong, sweet and with lots of hops. Tuesday, November 9, 2004

3.5 Rome Starbess Strong Ale Bottle, GBBF 2004. Amber, moderate white head and moderate condition. Sweet malt and caramel with some low roastiness in the nose. Sweet low barley wine like in the mouth and relatively subdued in the finish with a gentle syrupy maltiness dominating. Sunday, October 31, 2004

3.4 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Cloudy and deep amber. Nose was filled with sweet spices and citrus. Flavor was loaded with a zippy citrus, candi sugar, and caramel-coated apples. A little acidic at times. Sweetness was big up front, but seemed to thin out toward the finish. Malty barleywine with a tamed sweetness. Interesting stuff. Sunday, October 24, 2004

3.8 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is murky dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, molasses), lightly yeasty (mold), with notes of peach, sherry, alcohol, and toffee. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. A beer that seems to be more than the sum of its parts. Thanks to Nick for a sample of this rarity. Sunday, October 17, 2004

3.8 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine Hot malty and alcoholic aroma. Very malty palate with a sweet hoppy taste. Doesn’t taste like 16% but still strong. Wednesday, October 13, 2004

3.8 Rome Maelstorm Barleywine This is one big Italian beer. Ruddy Brown. Pleasantly aromatic. Very lively, odd and doughy, like a pretzel covered in cinnamon and sugar with white icing on the side. Notes of plums as well. Definately an English barley wine. Strong, soft, rich and very malt accented. Notes of plums, pears, sugars, apples and cinnamon. I have another bottle that I plan on aging. I bet this will age fairly well. Thanks Michael. Sunday, October 3, 2004

3.8 Rome Starbess Strong Ale Sampled at the breweries sampling cafe and many times afterward later in the week. Dark Brown. I never really received much from the aroma. It was always subtle and somewhat fruity. But what a taste. Each and every time. Medicinal up front. Lovely malt notes in the mid-palate; dried red apple, watermelon seed and plums. The lingering and outrageous finish was full of a coating malty sweetness and a faint hint of hop resins. I enjoyed this one a lot. Sunday, October 3, 2004

3.9 Rome Starbess Red Ale Sampled at the breweries sampling cafe in Rome, Italy. Red. Interesting nose. Spicy, citrus like whiffs but what dominates is the sprice and pine notes. Unmistakably odd but what a beer. Hoppy as hell. The hop notes dominate providing notes of spruce, pine, resin and orange but what is interesting about this beer is its malt backbone. It’s kind of meaty, soft of husky and full of caramel. Once again Mike! Sunday, October 3, 2004

4 Rome Weisse Sampled at the breweries sampling cafe in Rome, Italy. Hazed Yellow. Tantalizing aroma. It was hard to keep my patience. Doughy yeast, fresh pastries, banana, clove, nutmeg and various spices in the nose. Flavors much like the aroma. Creamy in the mouth, light bodied and very drinkable. Enormous for its size and great for the style. Nice one Mike! Sunday, October 3, 2004

3.5 Rome Wit! Sampled at a restaurant in Rome, Italy solely serving Rome Brewing Company’s beers on draft. Really subtle but lovely aroma. Light fruitiness , mainly coriander and orange peel. The lack of a Belgian yeast strain does effect things but it doesn’t take away from the beer that much. Orange, tangerine and coriander with an unusual pleasant mustiness that came out as the beer warmed a bit. This is much more and american wheat beer spiced with coriander than a Belgian Blanche. This somehow works but it could improve a bit and I have a feeling Michael will change the recipe in the future. Sunday, October 3, 2004

3.8 Rome Pioneer Pale Ale Sampled at the breweries sampling cafe in Rome, Italy. Boy oh boy was I excited for this beer. I had been in Europe for about month before I came to Rome and hadn’t had an IPA or anything hoppy for that matter since London which was the first few days of my trip. I needed something hoppy and I needed it then! When I tasted it I knew it was an IPA then I asked and sure enough it was! Just imagine my excitement. Light Bronze. Cascade aroma. Spicy with citrus notes, mainly lemon and grapefruit but also a hint of pine. Hop Heavy. Biscuit and caramel like malt in the backround behind hop notes of lemon peel, orange, spices and grapefruit. Mouthfeel is big and creamy. A great beer from a great brewer. Thanks Michael. Sunday, October 3, 2004

3.2 Rome Starbess Strong Ale A rich and hoppy brew. Lots of prunes and raisins in the fruit profile. A bit like a barley wine, I suppose. I found the alcohol level a bit intrusive, bit, overall, I thought is was an interesting and palatable beer. It’s just that I’m rarely convinced that the extra alcohol really does much for the beer. I preferred the Pioneer Pale Ale too. Bottled at GBBF 2004. Friday, September 10, 2004

2.7 Rome Starbess Strong Ale Bottle. Quiet syruppy and sticky, quite raisiny and sweet, with a fair amount of hops, a bit sweet, the style really isn’t my bag, i preferred the Pioneer Pale Ale of the same brewery. Thursday, September 2, 2004

3.5 Rome Pioneer Pale Ale Having been introduced to the brewer, Michael Murphy - an American living and working in Rome, we had to give this a go. I can confidently say that this leaps straight in as my number one Italian beer, not that the opposition is up to much. Clearly American in style, it has typical resinous hops in the aroma and more fruity hops on the palate, with some balancing malt. A very good effort. My only minor criticism (and this could apply to many US style beers) is that the hopping imparts a rather sticky, sweetish character compared to the crisper bitterness that us Brits are used to. Here’s wishing Michael every success with his venture. Bottled at GBBF 2004. Tuesday, August 17, 2004
