Inawashiro Golden Angel
A bit sweet but not too much. Quite smooth. Though not my favorite style of beer, it’s quite easy to drink. Amber copper color.

Copper color. Sweet fruity malty nose with some mineral and fruitiness. Nice minerally mouth with bready notes and good fruitiness. Excellent Vienna lager. The name is a misnomer, but pretty enjoyable

Very dry grassy nose. The body is a bit too low carbonation for the style and my beer was served too warm. Decent but not dry enough. Not a bad pils, but not top level for japan.

Inawashiro Brown Weizen
On tap at The Griffon in Shinjuku. Murky, dirty brown with a light tan soapy weizen-like head. Aromas of chocolate banana, clove and some light caramel. Taste is pretty much like the nose with some light cacao and roast noticeable as it warms. Fairly sweet, but not cloying. Tastes better than it looks.

Tap at CBM Koenji. Clear deep gold color with a nice big white head. Aromas of fruit and malt. Taste is more of the same, although quite well-balanced and kind of overripe fruit sour/sweetness. Sourdough bread on the finish.

Tap at GJBF Osaka 2015. Very decent smokey nose. Flavors of dark fruit, smoke, lightly harsh bittering hop... and it flattens out fairly quickly in finish. Not bad at all. Wish the flavors would hold out a bit longer.

Inawashiro Brown Weizen
Tap at GJBF Osaka 2015. Pungent wheaty nose, fresh and fruity. Murky, hazed-out dull dirty brown color. Slightly too sweet in the initial. Bittering intrudes early and does not work well here. Except for the punchy nose, not so distinct from their regular weizen.

Inawashiro Weizen
Tap at GJBF Osaka 2015. Big fresh fruity nose, mild banana, some spice. Hazy blond straw color. Good wheaty initial, large jump of carbonation in mid palate, and then flavors flatten out quickly in final. The mid palate burst of carbonation is not welcome. Anyway, not bad and fairly refreshing stuff.

Tap at GJBF Osaka 2015. Overly fruity nose, some pleasant maltiness. Sweetish malt flavor, light malts, some caramal, good balance, small fruity tang in mid palate. Very fruity. Has pils malt.

On tap at GJBF Osaka 2015. Weizen A cloudy honey gold pour with a Weizen + DMS nose. The taste is cloves & popcorn, strangely it works but obviously that popcorn flavor shouldn’t be there. Alright.

Tap at CBM Koenji. Floury and wheaty aroma, taste is similar, not mind blowing but everything is in the right place. Little bit of sweetness but not too much. Not so bitter. Nice enough.

Inawashiro Rauch
On tap at CBM Koenji. Dark brown with red highlights and a medium-sized off-white head. Aromas of smoked malt, bacon and maple. Very nice nose on this. Slightly sweet on the palate with caramel and maple shining through with a touch of milk chocolate. It starts to fall apart with the body. It is thin and bit too watery for me. Solid effort on the flavor though.

Inawashiro Brown Weizen
On tap at Two Dogs in Roppongi. A somewhat cloudy brown pour, very yeasty flavor with mild spicy weizen notes. I didn’t get much from the darker malts, I was expecting some biscuit/graham notes. Ok but still tweaking the recipe I think... This is a brown colored yeasty weizen, that’s it.

Tap a Craft Beer Market Toranomon. Pale blond colour, big white head that quickly fades. Aroma is interesting. The usual banana and wheat, quite herbal too. Taste is good, quite spicy, lots of grain. Little bit of citrus, bubblegum too. Quite interesting, but maybe a bit thin. Otherwise pretty good.

My Bottom Line:
Delicately toasted malts and spicy hops strangely segue into a fruity finish in what is billed as a Vienna-style lager.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the misty amber-hued golden.
-Body is lean and soft.
-Malts are well polished, but that fruitiness sadly dominates them in the flavor profile.
-The finish is very fruity. Again, this is supposed to be a lager?!?

On tap at Goodbeer Faucets.

Inawashiro Brown Weizen
Tap at Craft Beer Market Toranomon. Dark amber colour, slightly cloudy, golden creamy head. Aroma is wheaty, sweet, mostly grain. Not that strong a smell. Taste is nice enough, sweetness, element of weizen banana thing, creamy, sweet but not with the same intensity as a regular weizen. More malty. Not knockout exciting, but nice enough.

Draught at Griffon. Orange-brown, nice fine head. A rather faint nose (too cold…), but I got some cocoa and a touch of corn. Could have some DMS problems. Flavor has tasty chocolate, with banana, clove, cinnamon and a touch of corn. Rather bland, and a bit off, but I hope they fine-tune this first seasonal I’ve seen from them.

Inawashiro Rauch
At the Kaga Beer Hall as ’Brewery Kaga Original Beer’ Rauch on draught. Rather too sweet for a classic Rauchbier - I agree with Kyotolefty that this has more of a ’dunkelweiss’ base to it, though the smoking is about right. The least impressive of an impressive range.

As draught ’Brewery Kaga Original Beer’ Golden Angel at the World of Glassware "Brauerei" in Kaga. As thus far I have largely agreed with Kyotolefty, I suspect he got a duff bottle and I got the same ber in full working order. (Cos it was brilliant.) Classic Munchener but with a slightly sweet tang that I am hoping was deliberate.

Inawashiro Weizen
As draught ’Brewery Kaga Original Beer’ Weizen (5%) at the World of Glassware "Brauerei" in Kaga. I was seriously impressed by this heavyweight Weizenbier that has no right to tatse this good made so far from home. They say the wheat and barley are imported from Franconia and the banana taste testifies to the authentic weizen yeast. Exceptional.

Inawashiro Pilsner
As draught ’Brewery Kaga Original Beer’ Pilsener (5%) at the World of Glassware "Brauerei" in Kaga. Reinheitsgebot standard, exceptionally tasty Pilsener with an impressive mix of bitter and aromatic hopping. Said by staff at this massive beer hall to be the Inawashiro beer. Part of an unusually excellent range.

Inawashiro Rauch
500 ml bottle, mail ordered from the brewery. Medium to dark brown color, orange tints. Pretty head that goes to lace quickly. Rich, dark, smoky aroma, with caramel malts, chocolate, and dried bonito flakes. Rich and aromatic. Smokey, caramel flavor. Very much like a dunkel is the base. Bread, chocolate, and smoke in there. Rather well-smoked for a Japanese beer. Well integrated, though the body is too thin and the middle palate a bit too fruity. Nicely done, though missing the body and richness of the German Rauchbiers.

500 ml Bottle, mail-ordered from the brewery. Very cloudy golden orange color with a high, rocky head. Spicy, rich wheat malt aroma with mild banana and a touch of tart fruit. Cloves and a bit of pepper in there. Sweet fruit flavor, banana, citrus, apple. Spices big time. Relatively light and crisp, with nice cereal malts as well. Very flavorful and well-balanced. Good weizen. A tad too sweet, dessert-like, but good.

500 ml bottle mail-ordered from the brewery. Clear golden color with a tall, frothy white head. Rich pilsner malt aroma with strong noble hops and some butter, though not too much. Rich cereals and a touch of fruit. Sweet, biscuity malt flavor, with some fruit and decent hop aroma. Crisp bitter finish. Sweet and full-flavored, but with perfect balance. Very nicely done. Rich and creamy body. A very nice pils.

Draught at Thrash Zone. Hazy golden with a crisp white head. Aroma of sweet malts, light fruit, wheat, and yeast. A bit on the light side. Cream body, maybe a little thin. Flavor is similar to aroma, but with a bit more wheat and yeast. Smooth and pretty refreshing, though not all that exciting.

A hazy, medium Amber color with a small white head. Plenty of Banana scent, but a tad artificial smelling. A somewhat tart wheat, with some banana and very little spice. To be fair, this bottle had a use by date of December ’04 so that could explain the tartness. I will need to try a fresh bottle of this and then re-rate.

Light golden with a big rocky cream colored head, good lacing. A dusty hop scent, like dried grass. Has a decent bitter bite up front with a touch of sweet malt in the middle, fades to a bitter aftertaste. I’m not a big Pils fan, but this is fairly good!

This is a "half and half" style beer. It isn’t blended at the bar, but made and bottled this way. A dark Amber/Orange color, slightly hazy with a foamy beige head. Malts and Hallertauer hops in the nose. Sweet malts, cotton candy with a floral hop flavor. Not bad but could have been better!

Inawashiro Rauch
A deep dark Brown, clear, not opaque with a large foamy tan head. Leaves nice lacing like rings of a tree on the glass. Has a good Rauch nose like smoked salmon or a tin of smoked baby clams (man I love those!) The taste isn’t one of smoked barley, it’s more like that BBQ seasoning "Liquid Smoke", not quite that artificial but this just doesn’t have character, one dimensional (even for a Rauch) But I give them an "A" for effort. This is the first attempt at a Rauchbier from a Japanese brewer that I’ve found.
