Elmars In The Valley Black Diamond
Tasted 1/4/2016. Draught at Elmar’s In The Valley. Poured a slightly hazy dark brown almost black colour with a one-finger off-white foamy head that diminished slowly to a collar that laced well. Carbonation low and fine. Aroma of dark roasted malts. Taste strongly of roasted malt followed by subtle hops bitterness; quite malty. Light to medium body. Smooth and slightly dry with a soft mouthfeel with a nice roasted malt finish. Good.

Elmars Kölsch
Tasted 1/4/2016. Draught at Elmar’s In The Valley. Poured a crystal clear pale straw colour with a one-finger bright white foamy head that diminished slowly to a collar that laced OK. Carbonation low and fine. Aroma with hint of grain and possibly lemon. Tasteless all the way through. Light body. Smooth with a soft mouthfeel and just bland. Not a good example of a kölsch.

Elmars Ein Stein Pilsener
Tasted 1/4/2016. Draught at Elmar’s In The Valley. Poured a slightly hazy pale straw colour with a white foamy head that diminished quickly to a collar that laced OK. Carbonation low and fine. Aroma subtly of sweet honey with subtle hops. Taste bland with a following tartness. Light body. Crisp and slightly dry with a soft mouthfeel and with an acrid tartness on the finish. Very lager like and not that nice.

Elmars Bock Bier
I like this. Local bock beer is rare. Orange/golden in appearance., sweet cooking aromas. Not as much maillard flavours as expected, but still a generous amount. Doesn’t feel 6.6% abv. Best in show at elmars.

Deep mahogany in colour. Very timid indiscernible aroma molested by a hearty chocolate malt stranger. Lowish carbonation. A solid effort.

Roasty bready aromas. Feels bigger than its 4.8% abv. Ale yeast throws some earthy esters and is backed by a solid malt backbone that finishes spicy and pleasantly bitter.

Cloudy yellow. Spicy aromas with a touch of coriander. Citrus up front before spiciness comes to play. Finishes very dry, which is ok, but a touch more residual sweetness wouldn’t go astray.

Tap at the brewery. Pours a straw yellow colour. Nose has light bread malts and citrus notes. Pretty clean taste very crisp light biscuit malts. Little hoppiness. Clean for the style. Better than the shitty marzen beer they had ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A very authentic Oktoberfest style beer. Clean, malty (toasty) and easy drinking. Only the lightest caramel sweetness which is a common fault in these beers (IMO). This place brews some real gems from time to time. Had a litre of it yesterday which led to a nice sleep on the couch when I got home.

Elmars Schwarzbier
I had this beer in a 1L Maßkrug from the tap. It appears black with hints of brown and a tan head. On the nose there are dark roasted coffee and slight caramel and chocolate aromas. This beer has a bitter taste with a strong burnt wood aftertaste. Thick texture with strong carbonation. Overall a very burnt, smoky dark beer with strong coffee flavour. I wanted more malt and more flavour in the mouth. It was a bit like a black coffee in beer form. This is a nice dark beer but was all aroma and aftertaste, with not much flavour present.

Elmars Kölsch
On draught @ EImar’s in the valley.
I love traditional Kölsch so am always critical when I see them popping up all over Oz. This one has the potential and only just missed the mark for me. Produces up quite hazy; a pastel yellow in colour with light effervescence and a towering, messy head of foam that leaves a web of lace. The aroma is quite soft and delicate and leans towards wheat grain, lemon zest and pear drops. First sip brought a shiver and little else. Chilled to almost freezing point from the taps it took a lot to heat it up. Eventually a good lot of pale malt comes through on the palate, some light yeasty notes before a zingy citrus back end and well pronounced, grassy and dusty hops on the swallow. A linger of grass and pine builds, the bitterness very low to no. Featherweight in body with prickly carbonation. Much more alive once it was chilled. Would love to see this one served from oak. As is it is definitely a nice Summer quaffer!

Elmars Bock Bier
Tried on draught chatting away to the brewer a few months back now. Appears a sunny orange gold, quite radiant and almost oily looking as it swirls around the glass yet maintaining of a tight, compact white crown. A lot of doughy ripe cantaloupe and sweet pale malt comes through on the nose with inklings of peach and mango and a little alcohol spice. Soft on the palate, well rounded and creamy in mouthfeel. Fruit is more subtle than the nose but affable , alcohol is evident but welcome, warming and held in check by some well pronounced nutty and sweet malt flavours, a good level of peppery spice keeps it interesting. The finish is a blend of malt and soft cantaloupe-like fruitiness which lingers on the palate. Nice, clean, straightforward bock, sweet but shows good balance. Easy drinking! Elmars Schwarzbier
Fast becoming my favourite brewery these guys and in score this to become my favourite tipple. Unfiltered, unaltered Schwarzbier with long lagering times, sweet, I’m there!
Produces up a radiant deepest mahogany that shimmers in the light. Head, solid off the pour, a condensed tannish pad that holds well, a good bit of lace work left. Peaty, weedy smokiness on the nose, raw and earthy with a nice burnt malt edge. Quite woody on the palate is first impressions, a sweet malt front guides it, a very tight, subtle astringency on the swallow is welcomed. Smoky, burnt clean malts, light chocolate note late, quite earthy and gritty mid-palate, a weedy, herbal backdrop enhances the flavour, the swallow mildly bitter, dry and drawing. Late linger of peanut husks and bitter cacao beans. I can’t fault this one. Light bodied, assertively flavoured and heaving a fine waft. Feels good on the palate, dry enough to get the ol’ salivary glands into shape whilst refreshing the palate. Beautifully crafted, an easy drinking Schwarzbier. Elmars Over Draft Alt Ale
i remember this beer on my travell around australia in 2005. the beer for me at the time had a forgetable startinging taste but managed to grow some legs and gain a long after taste. long malty nutty flavour. it always left an impression how it tranformed. pitty about the initial flavour but was a good enough beer to go for a few. i would love to give it another go with some more expriance under the belt. ( great beer garden to by the way.... back yard cricket!!!)

Tried the other weekend at Elmars in the Swan Valley. Yellowy urine colour with white head that lasts. Clovey note on the aroma, at first taste a bit buttery then just a bit too sweet . A strong beer for the average punter.

Dark ruby red body with off-white head. Caramel-like on the nose with a sweet taste to me at first impression, wasn’t too heavy, smooth and not harsh, touch of astringency on the finish. No coffee notes noticeable the second time I tried this after a gap of a couple of months.

Elmars Ein Stein Pilsener
Sampled at the brewery. The bartender said this is their most popular brew of the lineup. Bright golden with a nice thick white cap that leaves generous lace. Floral perfumey aroma, very nice, with underlying clean grains. Crisp and well-hopped with nice floral hop flavouring and a sound bitter finish. An excellent pilsener.

Cloves on the nose and in the taste, not much banana at all. Fairly clear body that was yellowy gold with an almost lasting head.
This was advertised as a dark wheat beer but I don’t know what was dark about it.

Another poorly lasting head on a copper honey coloured body. Much better balanced than the former beer as I was expecting this to a bigger tasting beer. Mainly malt showing, touch grainy, burnt toffee on a light to medium body. Nothing outstanding but overall easily drinkable as the alcohol is there but not interfering.

First though this was an coppery amber body but up against the bock it was yellow/dull golden colour with a short lasting head. Not a lot of aroma. Caramel in the taste at first then a small dose of resiny hops, medium body and sticky finish, not my style, probably easy enough to drink plenty of for the Octoberfest.

Elmars Kick Back Wheat Beer
Draught, vom fass @ the brewhouse/restaurant, Henley Brook, Swan Valley.
Straw yellow, opaque and from what I could see very lightly carbonated. Creamy, soft white lather of foam formed and held on well leaving behind some minor lacing. Zesty lemons and lemon puree, and some sour wheat make up the tight, clean aroma. Unusually similar in the mouth, I was hoping for a massive rush of weissbier phenols and esters but this was almost a prodigal Witbier. Pleasant, spritzy carbonation on the tongue, light bodied and slightly pasty. Nice winter wheat flavours are harnessed to full effect. Lemon zest, souring malts and a touch of clove-like phenols cross the mouth with unrepentant vigour. Finish is powdery, sour but not puckering and reasonably smooth. This was quite nice despite my brighter judgements. Very, very easy to drink.

Elmars Ein Stein Pilsener
Draught, unfiltered, unpasteurised @ the brewhouse, Henley brook, Swan Valley. Slight chill haze more than residual yeast deposits and proteins. Medium gold in body adorned by a firm, frothy white head that managed some nice lacework. Big buttery, sourdough, cracked pepper and fresh mowed grass aroma. A lot cleaner in the mouth, very light in body, prickly in carbonation, and clean and crisp in the finish. Dry, barnyard malts make up the palate with a lesser power to some dusty, spicy hops in the arse end that give a very firm bitter bite to it. Overall I can’t argue for or against. This was just a simple, pleasant, brainless quaffer that went down the way it was made to. Quite nice!!!

Elmars Over Draft Alt Ale
Vom fass @ the brewhouse/restaurant, Henley Brook.
The best of the bunch as far as balance, flavour and sessionability goes. I hope it’s now a different brew from that which Bluevegie trialled. Chestnut, tawny amber in body, subliminal haze about it (all beers are unfiltered), and very light in carbonation. Firm, albeit soapy lather of off-white foam formed, lasted and drabbed down the glass well. Woody, smoky, salted, roasted nut aroma that was down-right pleasing. Nice depth of malt in the mouth despite its light body. Spritzy carbonation yields some firm nutty, dry, slightly tannic, smoky dark malts (too many comma’s used so far, big no-no!!!). Finish has some sharp bitter hops that displace the malt swiftly and add another dimension to this very quaffable ale. Its aftertaste is woody, softly astringent, and quite nutty and fresh. This has session ale written all over it and the patron’s of this German brewhouse agree. This was a nice drop.

When is hot alcohol a good thing? For some unknown to myself reason it aided this little rocket-fuelled monster. Only 6.4%, but f’firks ’ake it was heady. Poured a bright tawny copper with minimal carbonation and minimal head retention. Light laxed trace of white daubed the glass here and there. Toffeeish, warming, sticky date pudding nose dowsed with clear spirits. Strong kick of hot alcohol in the mouth with a levelled malt, wood, and toffee backbone. Bitter, burnt fruit, pecan pie and a ship load of cough medicine add to its extremities. Finish has again alcohol but it is more controlled, warming and harbouring some pleasant berry, nut and pale malt flavours, and is overall smooth to its credit. Body is treacly, not overly big and very light in carbonation. It hasn’t got the flavour to hold the alcohol, but again for some reason it works as a strong lager. Went well with my Schweinn Haxe, and the fact it was cold and windy outside. Good effort overall.

Orange body with tinges of red and light muddy brown. This was unfiltered also and had the best head retention of the three beers tried. Initially the taste was fairly bland but right at the end could pick up cookie and or malt. The previous two beers tried had some character and this was a play it safe beer for the customers.

Hazy straw gold body with a poor head but decent lacing. Yeasty dough aroma as well hops. Pleasant bitterness that stays the journey then dries out on the finish. Also noticeable in the taste was light grainy malt and hop oil. I liked this pils but I don’t think it will be everyone’s cup of tea. This is a new brewer in the swan valley and the more competition the better.
