The Steam Exchange India Pale Ale
Draught at Steam Exchange Brewery, Goolwa. ABV = 5.6%. Poured a crystal clear dark amber with a few mm of bright white dense foam that retained well and laced OK. Carbonation moderate, slow and medium sized. Aroma moderately strong of caramel malt with a hint of spice. Taste is caramel malt and slight spices; low bitterness as per the English IPA style. Light body. Smooth and crisp with a medium-length finish.

330 ml bottle. Clear deep ruby copper, big tan froth slowly settles and lasts. Pleasing subtle chocolate vanilla aroma. Taste is smooth chocolate and vanilla, not too sweet, medium roast, trace of bourbon. Softer carbonation, medium bodied, low hopped. Lovely. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Nice and full-flavoured for a sessionable ale. Almost an IPA in nose and initial palate. From the tap at the brewery.

The Steam Exchange Truffles Porter
On tap thru hopback @ Wheatsheaf $10pint. Extra coffee and hop aromas and flavours from the hopback made this more of a sweet stout instead of a porter. Strong coffee and sweet roast flavor.

The Steam Exchange Truffles Porter
(13-Nov-2006) Big sweet choc vanilla malt aroma. Brown red colour, good head and suds lacing. Big sweet bourbon big vanilla and light roast malt flavour. Bourbon woody and sweet vanilla malt finish. Nice distinctive beer for its time. Perhaps a beer to drink as a quafer in small quanitities, otherwise it could become a bit sickly. I’d be interested in rerating this beer to see whether it has changed or my palate has moved on.

The Steam Exchange Oscar Ale
330 ML Hazy orange color, half finger of white head that falls to a film. Nose is not a scotch ale at all. All good though. Candied citrus and pine with hints of caramel. Taste is a bit confusing. Bits of orange and banana but very thin and watery. Fast and fleeting taste. Soft, weak body. Very weak and watery. More like a pale ale crossed with a wheat. Needs a lot more.

The Steam Exchange Stout
This beer has the usual checklist for a stout. It looks good an black. It has a coffee and chocolate roastness to it but unfortunately there is nothing to the beverage, very slight grassy notes other wise the roast coffee and chocolate don’t come through as much as I usually enjoy with a stout. Over all this feels watery and flat.

The Steam Exchange Truffles Porter
A-- Poured a dark, deep cola color. Settled black. Quick fading one finger light brown head. A few beads of carbonation rise from the sides. Really nice head retention to this. On swirling got a two, almost 3 finger head that was light sand in color. S-- Vanilla, dark milk chocolate and some odd fruitiness to this. Some pear and green apple. Has the scent of a candle in some ways. Lacking he roasted malt character of this. T-- Dark bitter chocolate. No sweetness to this. Very forward chocolate and some burnt malts or barley. M-- Medium feel and medium carbonation. Staple of Australian porters and stouts are higher than normal carbonation for the style. I suppose to make it more drinkable and approachable. Lots of dark chocolate in the mouth but nothing to smooth it out. Kind of harsh in a way. Like the 90% coco bars can find here. Get a bit of apple again in the mouth. Finishes dry. D-- With some sweetness this could be really good. Has the porter taste but is very one dimensional.

The Steam Exchange Southerly Buster Dark Ale
From a 330ml bottle on 14/8/2012. Pours a dark amber with a small fine head. Has a slightly unusual aroma of caramel malt and pear. In the mouth, it’s malt dominated with sweet caramel and lots of brown sugar, some hints of dark fruit, and a medium roasty bitterness at the back. A decent brown ale.

The Steam Exchange Southerly Buster Dark Ale
Pours a dark copper, hazy with high carbonation resulting in a persistant light cream head. Smells great, caramel malt, toffee and some dried fruit. Full flavour, prickly carb, some spiciness. I really quite like this one.

The Steam Exchange Truffles Porter
From a 330ml bottle on 6/5/2011. Pours a very dark amber. The beer foamed out of the bottle with such force that I lost about a quarter of its contents. Has a modest aroma of roasted malt and molasses. The flavour is dominated by chocolate, with a reasonably strong alcohol and roasted malt bitter finish. I get the bourbon but couldn’t taste any vanilla. Not really a dessert beer as claimed. An okay porter, but nothing special.

The Steam Exchange Pale Ale
Pours dark amber with a large fading head. Aroma shows lots of spicy and grapefruit hops. Loads of crystal malt. Pretty nice. Though not all that much in the way of American hops. Mass of crystal malt dominates the flavours, before a sharp metallic bitterness follows. Carbonation is a little high. Nice other than that metallic bitterness.

The Steam Exchange Southerly Buster Dark Ale
Bottle, 13C. Dark toffee with a ridiculous light beige head. But just a conditioning mistake, it seems - aroma of vinegar toffee, toasted malt, preserved ginger, mace. Unsurprisingly too fizzy. Taste has toasted malt, caramel, malt vinegar, raisins, less spice than suggested by the smell. They haven’t got the bottling anywhere near right, but there’s a pretty good beer lurking underneath the fizz.

The Steam Exchange Stout
330ml bottle. Pours a dark black, with a sizeable tan head, which fades disappointingly quickly. Aroma of chocolate and coffee, with a hint of nuts in the background. Dark bitter flavours dominate to start, with espresso prominent in the mix. This is followed by a coffee chocolate flavour and a Vienna coffee finish. A classy stout.

The Steam Exchange Steam Ale
330ml bottle. I can’t really accurately comment on the pour, as it was consumed straight from the bottle. The aroma is very hoppy, with pine and resin notes, and some dried berries. Fruity, oily hops start it off, moving into some sweeter dried peel as the drink progresses. The initial flavour returns in the finish. Whilst not the world’s most excellent beer, for an APA, usually one of my least favourite ale styles, this stuff is pretty impressive. It has some interesting flavours in there, and only falls short of the excellent Little Creatures Pale Ale by a hair’s breadth.

The Steam Exchange Southerly Buster Dark Ale
330ml bottle. Pours a hazy chestnut, with a moderate white head, passable retention and limited lace. The aroma has a lot of malt in it, with toffee and chocolate particularly noticeable, as well as some dried fruit and christmas pudding hints. Hints of pepper to start, with some sweeter citrus lurking in there too. These are soon overcome by more dried fruit, with the tiniest suggestion of cloves and anise appearing soon after. The finish contains an odd briny hint, possibly due to the location of the brewery next to the Murray estuary at Goolwa, followed by lingering caramel notes. A lovely beer, which would be excellent as a winter drink.

The Steam Exchange India Pale Ale
On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy ruby amber, with a medium white head, reasonable retention and a nice lacing. The nose is redolent with spicy fruit notes, with some resin hops detectable and a hint of rum lurking in the background. There are lots of peppery and citrus hops to start, moving into a full-bodied malty mid-section, with lots of berry fruit. The finish is smooth and fruity, but with a hint of spice. Not as hoppy as most IPAs, but this is nonetheless a good effort.

Bottle at a tasting, 15th of January 2011. Pours a darkish brown with an average light brown head. Definate dark chocolate in the aroma, slight hint of bourbon (borbon barrel maybe?). Taste is dark chocolate with a hint of vanilla and sweet caramel, along with some roasted malt. I would have it again, but won’t be going out of my way to get it.

Went to the brewery a couple of years back but unfortunately this wasn’t available on the day. Deep dark brown body with little head. Notice the bourbon on the aroma along with dark choclate and some roasted notes. Some vanilla comes through in the taste along with the chocolate. Drinkable.

Draught at the Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst. Tasty winter warmer, but nothing special. Chocolate, roasted, and toasted malts combine with a hint of coffee and some cinnamon to finish it off. Would happily drink it again, but wont go out of my way to find it.

The Steam Exchange Oak Aged Pale Ale
Love this beer! The texture is amazing and bubbles the perfect size. Its like drinking the beer version of a thickshake. A slight caramel taste with the oak flavour is amazing. Its the only beer i can drink as fast as water. I cant get enough of this stuff. I wish i could have bought a carton of it. Up there in my top 5 beers. Great work by Steam Exchange.

The Steam Exchange Oak Aged Pale Ale
Very clear, brilliant dark amber colour. Lots of malt and a good amount of oak aroma there. Full mouthfeel, plenty of oak and some sweet malt flavour too. This is a seasonal release on tap at the Wheatsheaf, aged on oak staves for three weeks. Very good beer, best I’ve had from this brewer.

Bottle. Red-tinged dark brown with a large light tan head. Modest aroma has vanilla, chocolate, oak, damp earth. Mouthfeel wants to be creamy but is too fizzy. Light roast, vanilla, some berries, chocolate, a little wood. Didn’t really pick much in the way of bourbon.

The Steam Exchange Stout
Very dark brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, grass - smells just like a Croweater stout. Soft taste of light roast, chocolate, prune-like sourness and grassy bitterness. Mouthfeel improves after a swirl or two - it’s quite gassy. I’ve a soft spot for Sth Australian stouts and this is a plain and easy-drinking specimen of a style that kept decent beer alive in this country until very recently.

A much better bet than the standard stout albeit still too fizzy. Deeper flavour profile here with dark chocolate, vanilla, sweet oak and a slightly weird choc-raspberry licorice note. Actually very nice. Fizzy does cut at the flavour however. Can’t believe this is 9%+, can barely feel it.

The Steam Exchange Stout
Not a startling stout by any stretch but it certainly grows on you. Starts our quite dry, roasty, minerally and austere but develops and opens up nicely as the beer warms up. Chocolate and sweet coffee becomes more apparent and the roast note softens. A bit fizzy for my tastes but not out of step with its domestic peers in this respect.

Bottle 6.5%. Dark brownish ruby pour with a creamy tan head that lasts a while. Aroma has powerful notes of bourbon, vanilla and chocolate, with lesser notes of toffee, spice and cherry. Flavour is similar but fruitier, with some added berry notes, as well as being more woody and spicy. Mouthfeel is quite light, almost watery, with moderate carbonation and a lengthy bittersweet finish. Slightly unusual this beer, a little like a sweet old ale, but pretty good all the same.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a dense rocky tan coloured head. A little lacing. Decent looking beer. I dont get much in the way of aroma. A little chocolate and yeast aroma. Not much in the way of bourbon nor the expected roasted malt character. Flavours are some what beetter. A little sweet chocolate up front and a little roasted malt character near the end. Once again no real bourbon character. Mouthfeel seems to be in line with the style. Not a bad porter but not much else.

Alright who ever entered this beer was a bit under the weather because this is 6.9%, not 9.6%! Starts with an unusual berry like nose. In the mouth it is pure porter - a little thin and not my favourite style but decent. Don’t get much of the bourbon. Double chocolate vanilla bourbon porter? nah just a half decent porter.

330ml bottle. Rich and deep, the beige creamy foam fills the top half of the glass before settling. Dull sunset orange colour with caramel and malty biscuit aromas. Tart finish follows a well balanced complex flavour with a big bold body . Feels good when swirled around in the mouth and is very enjoyable.

Floral, fruity, aromatic style is very appealing and pretty. A big gusher upon pouring and a piney note on the nose indicated a bug, but the palate showed no problems whatsoever. Very balanced with no particular character really sticking out. I could drink this all day, partiucularly in the warmer weather.
