Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix La Coureuse des Champs du Bas du Fleuve
500 ml naturally-corked bottle from Marché des Saveurs in Montreal, QC (August 2006) served out of the fridge in a White Winter Winery glass. Why the heck is this one in a bigger bottle? Spoils the symmetry with the other two beautifully-labelled specimens. Oh well. Anyway, it pours a clear, slightly oily salmon-pink with fine legs.....very dry, musty nose is more reminiscent of old decaying paper than anything else, little in the way of evident fruit at first though dessicated blueberries and raspberries eventually appear....body is quite dry, lightly medicinal, but not as dry as the other two meads from this producer, as there is a bit of fruity sweetness and notable acidity, the berries contrast nicely with the woody/herbal notes that otherwise dominate the mouthfeel....fascinating and intriguing more than invigorating or enervating, this like the other two meads from St Paul de la croix is probably beyond my simple palate at the moment, but is certainly a notable, and noble attempt at expanding the hydromel horizons.

Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix Le Nectar du Terroir Basque
375 ml naturally-corked bottle from Marché des Saveurs in Montreal, QC (August 2006) served out of the fridge in a White Winter Winery glass. Very very pale, as pale and color-free (just a hint of yellow) as its label brethren, oily and with really quite minimal legs....much more honey in the nose than Les Filles du Soleil, earthy drying/decaying apples and hints of vanilla, a restrained sweetness, lovely....dry, even bitter apples and faint honey combine for a complex, farmy, sour-tart feeling on the tongue, lightly medicinal and alcoholic, very mineralic and husky at the finish, with a nice warmth and a bit of bite to end things; dried/burnt woods also in evidence. A nice aperetif, complex and fascinating, but for me a bit hard to drink. As with Filles du Soleil, I am quite happy to recork and finish it up later, an entire bottle would be impossible.

Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix Les Filles du Soleil
375 ml naturally-corked bottle from Marché des Saveurs in Montreal, QC (August 2006) served out of the fridge in a White Winter Winery glass. Very pale, completely still yellow-gold with faint quick-disappearing legs.....dry, lightly funky, herbal aroma, dry leaves and a touch of barnyard, old musty apples and finally, a faint hint of floral honey....exceptionally dry, subtle mouthfeel, just the faintest hint of bee-promulgated sweetness at midpalate and continuing just barely to the finish; whispers of chardonnay and crisp dry apples, chalky-clay soil, musk......light, slightly metallic mouthfeel; short, dusty finish....fascinating and compelling though I’m glad I can recork this until later, this is delicate and intense stuff, not for consuming a bottle at a time. One of the better dry meads I’ve had.

Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix La Coureuse des Champs du Bas du Fleuve
Very light blueberry note discernible in the lightly musty and sweet nose. Clear golden body is quite still, pale and winelike. No legs on the glass. Honey flavour is very apparent along with light notes of flowers and berries. Alcohol is barely suggested although there is some warming. Light, dry body. Cider glass. Fridge temperature. Bottle (Marché des Saveurs, Aug-06).
