Higsons Bitter
Tasted this at the Mossend Hotel, Lochwinnoch in January 1997. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale amber in colour with a thin white head. Floral hops in the short aroma. Thin resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a slight digestive biscuit note to the weak malt base. Tangy marmalade fruit just about evident in the mouth. Harsh metallic tang of hop resins present in the bitter aftertaste. Finish is fruity with orange rind present in the mouth. An ok session bitter.

Higsons Stout
Straight from the cask at the Stamps Beer festival in Crosby this beer ticks all my boxes. Dark dark, not much of a head, roasted malts dominate, espresso tones, dark chocolate and an excellent dry finish

Higsons Bitter
Cask, The Ship Inn, Hoylake, Wirral. Darkish golden colour with a creamy off white head. Hops in the nose. Smooth sliding down. Unobtrusive yeast and malt in the flavour. Lovely bitter finish. Great session material.

Higsons Stout
Cask conditioned at Banbury Beer Fest ’08. Dark brown with slight tan head. Dark roasted malts make a solid body for a dry thick stout, roasted coffee notes and a touch of sweetish chocolate. Dry in the finish, it’s quite a decent example of a stout.

Higsons Bitter
Cask conditioned at Banbury Beer Fest ’08. Amber to gold with slight head. I was really looking forward to trying this one and its great that the Higsons name has been resurrected however this is a fairly basic bitter, there is a dry, tea like hoppiness on a thinnish malt body. Its ok but not something to chase after.

Higsons Stout
Cask (handpump) at the Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. Dark red/brown - not entirely opaque. Quite roasty aroma. Some chocolate in the flavour. Burnt bitterness amplifies on the finish. Dry mouthfeel. Pretty decent. Although this brewery is promoted as a resurrection of the old Liverpool brewery that eventually became Cains, I don’t ever remember them making a stout in the old days.

Higsons Stout
Cask handpull at The Belvedere, Liverpool. Very dark brown with thick dark beige head. Very decent stout. Good thickness in the mouth. Lovely choc, bit of charcoal, but that’s a very good stout, good intensity, lovely grainy choc. Both Higson’s beers have been tasty. This is enormously drinkable.

Higsons Bitter
Cask handpull at The Belvedere, Liverpool. For anyone who has spent any time in Liverpool, the return of Higson’s does send a little thrill of excitement through you, purely for the historical factor. This beer is gold in colour with a thick beige head. Wow, what a nice bitter. Properly bitter on the finish. Easy drinking sessioning type beer. Attractive leafy green hop aroma, lively condition in the mouth, touch of sulphury yeasty falvour in mouth and then this hoppy bite. Excellent. Not sure if it is anything like the original, but this is a good start.
