A 19th and early 20th beer style from The Netherlands. Originally a top-fermented light-coloured beer, it was also produced as a dark bottom-fermented beer by large Dutch lager breweries from the 1870s onwards up until the First World War. ’Gerste’ means ’barley’ in Dutch.
