“Here is an attractive old German brewpub located in the cute lakeside town of Sparta. They serve some German dishes along with standard pub fare, and have about a half dozen of their beers on draft. The ambience is the best thing about the place, with dark panelling and sturdy wooden furniture giving the place a stately air. Their beers are just average, but if you like a Germanic vibe (Sparta seems like a pretty German town generally) you’ll probably enjoy coming here.“

“Thought this was a solid place. Very old school local bar type of feel. Dark, wood, big bar, lots of locals chatting with the bartender. 6 or so regular beers and 2 or so seasonals on my visit. 2 of the regulars were tapped, so down to just the 6 beers. I thought all of them were pretty okay, though the White Wine Barrel Saison was probably the best of the bunch, and that was a special/seasonal. Nice enough stop for a quick late lunch and a flight as I was driving through the area, but not a place I would seek out.“

“I love this place. Beautiful, large country/mountain type structure with high ceilings, fireplaces, exposed beams, etc. Very cozy inside. Upon entering, bar to right and dining area to the left. Summertime has BBQ patio outside and bocce ball area. Inside the bar area boast three sides that seats about 30 people and other smaller tables throughout. Roughly 40 taps going at any time plus about 10 bottles. Good deal on growlers. Very good beer selection. Live music on weekends starting around 9pm with dance floor area. Food is consistently good - burgers and Berkshire Pork Chop is amazing. Service is sporadic based on demand but generally pretty good. Highly recommended.“

“Krogh’s is located in a rural area of NJ, and has been brewing beer for quite some time. The building is reminiscent of Bavaria and is quite old, having housed several restaurants throughout its time. The interior is a bit cramped, but there is ample seating. The house beers were pretty standard, with nothing really exceptional on the menu.“

“Brewpub in downtown Sparta. Food is pretty good, but pretty standard pub fare - at least as far as the chicken sandwich I had goes. Beers were average brewpub, some maybe less so. Okay.“

“Enjoyed the Mohawk House in its early stages. The bartenders were great and very knowledgeable. Over time what I expected was not the same. They always rave about 50 beers on tap but not once have seen over 35.“

“An overall wonderful place! Stopped by to see how the beer selection was one day after work and I wasn’t disappointed. I sat in the bar area and was greeted right away by a friendly bartender. Great selection of beer that’s constantly changing. I went during happy hour (2-6) so beers were $2 off. I also got a $5 appetizer of buffalo wings. They were very tasty. Also, they have half-priced growler fills on Sunday and Monday! I was so psyched to hear about this. I’ll definitely be returning and I would recommend this place to any beer lover.“

“Always an enjoyable place to be, while the beer brewed their isn’t spectacular, the environment the bar provides is great. Typical bar food is good and the bartenders are pleasant as well.“

“Pretty much unrivaled beer selection, with a wide variety from crowd pleasers to some of the more obscure. Few seem to stay on tap constantly forcing you to try just about everything, even if you have a favorite. Price isn’t outrageous for what you’re getting, and the service seems to have improved of late, though I don’t often visit the bar during peak hours. The restaurant as a whole has a wonderful look to it and on the occasion I need a bite to accompany my beer, the food is consistently great. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area.“

“Once upon a time this was a good brewpub choice when north Jersey was a beer desert. Now between so many better choices (especially the great Mohawk House littlerally up the road)...and what I think is maybe either the beers going downhill...or my tastebuds getting more decerning from better choices...I no longer find this place a worthy craftbeer destination...which is a shame given the history of the place. I hope they make an effort to improve the beers or sell the place to someone who will...because it’s a great venue after all...in a quaint little town/lake community.“

“Its a great place and i used to come here alot but it has started to disappoint me. With some bartenders i feel either rushed to order or neglected because im not in a suit or spending alot of money. There are two bartenders who make me feel right at home. Still a great place.“

“The beer is ok. Only had 2 that I found delicious outta 5 I’ve tried there. The food was superb however. Generous portions, great variety, interesting and new types of specials. Great value too. You would expect much higher in a town like Sparta. My waiter/waitress was very good every time. Couldn’t complain. Had a fresh beer on the way as soon as I had 1/4 left. I’ll go back more often when I move and its not so far of a drive for sure.“

“Great find in beer starved NW Jersey. Beautiful country farm style building...almost like something from Europe with a great restaurant but the real attraction is a large separate bar area with 50 draft beers. The beers are all good ones with a large number of hard to find beers at any given time...especially Belgium’s and lesser known beers from major craft brewers. A great feature is the beer paddles...something more common at a brewpub than a beer bar like this. I end up trying more of the unusual selections as a result. There’s usually live music on weekends in the bar area that includes a dance floor. All of this comes without a cover charge (at least the times I’ve been there). I highly recommend this place. We also had Thanksgiving dinner here on the restaurant side and it was great...lots of fireplaces.“

“Was there this past weekend for my friends state winning Imperial Stout release on tap. While it may not be some peoples cup of tea, I like the local pub feel that the place has. The prices were reasonable, and the nacho appetizer we ordered looked like something out of Man vs Food. The service was a bit slow, but in all fairness it was a Friday night and it was packed. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back, but it’s the kind of place I’d frequent if I lived around the corner.“

“Beer first : An upstart at the craft beer thing but putting in a great effort. Always great seasonals including some belgian and english. The night I went I savored a St. Bernardus Christmas ale from the tap. Ayinger, Corsendonk, St. Bernardus, Sierra Nevada, North Coast, Dogfish Head, Franziskaner, Brooklyn, Chimay, Rogue, Stone all on tap. A spectacular dining room and bar/lounge with several dining areas including outdoor patio. All around Swiss Alps appeal from the stone and wood work and high ceilings. Phenomenal food from the dining room or the bar, if you do eat at the bar the burger is the boss but they also offer great margherita pie, mussels and creative apps. Upscale tavern feel in the lounge area and a massive screen behind the bar for the ball games. Right down the road from Krogh’s Brewpub and White Deer Inn Liquor Store. : July 2010 Update : Now have 34 taps that rotate pretty often and a nice suprise is introduced from time to time ie. KBS on tap, or Devil Dancer on tap. The owner Steve is a class act who is really running with the beer movement and will soon start up tastings at the restaurant. Great place for lounge dining or fine dining. Great potential for pairings due to their great diversity in food and beers that both change seasonally. This place will soon be the spot for beer folks in northern Jersey.“

“Visited last weekend while in the area. Very nice looking building in a very nice area. Inside is very rustic and old looking. Nice area to eat as well as a nice bar. Brewing area is visible through a glass door. I ordered a sampler which had 7 beers in it. The octoberfest was def gone bad or off. The food was quite good. French onion soup and my gf had a open faced roast beef sandwitch witch was very good. Pretty cool place. Average beers.“

“Pretty typical brewpub. The food and the beer are average to mediocre. Nothing too special. The oatmeal stout is probably their best. Lots of traffic and no parking. It’s worth going to if you’re in the immediate area, but that’s about it.“

“First thing is this is dark and bit like a cave around the bar (low ceiling). Very comfortable place to hang out. Their beers on tap plus some Macros. Food was average. Ambience isn’t much but it’s a casual place. Bartender was friendly.“

“Great store although very small. In a sweet plaza that replicates an old time Swiss type village. Really good selection for the size of the place and due to having a craft beer enthusiasts (Chad) on staff, they always have exciting gems to be found. Prices are always competitive and Kroghs brewpub is about 500 feet away! My last trip there I picked up Oskar Blues Gordons $10 4 pack ; Founders Imperial Stout $10 4 pack ; Troegs Nugget Nectar and Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter. They also have Founders Breakfast Stout, Double Trouble and so on. Very helpful also. Chad once called a brewery while I was in the store to check on a beer that I was asking about. Great little shop.“

“Go to Krogh’s and enjoy yourself at all times except heavy traffic times, at which you will find 1/4 mile away parking (which I actually don’t mind, unless I have the baby with me ), and an absolutely nuts to butts bar scene. Great atmosphere, very Bavarian pubish. Very good food : Get the following: the nachos grandes, the rarebit burger or chicken (Their rarebit sauce is an ale and cheddar sauce and it is awesome), any fish special although $$. Service is very good when it’s not busy. And even when it is busy the table service is still very good but the bar is just way to small and crowded. Some good beers, my personal favorites are the oatmeal stout ( ridiculously creamy head) and the alpine red. Good beer store right down the street called White Deer Plaza Liquors. I just scored Founders Breakfast Stout there. Their beer guy is Chad, nice guy and knows his stuff. Overall, Krogh’s is definitely worth a look if around the area but try to get there on a weekday if you can.“

“Food prices are high for the area (or even for NYC, for that matter)......$13 cheeseburgers and $5 soups are not cool. Beer is nothing special. Place is small and the rest rooms could use a (much needed) update, but the wait staff WAS friendly and helpful. Parking, as everyone mentions is ridiculous, and it gets crowded on the weekends. This is nothing more than a "locals" kind of place that happens to brew their own mediocre beer and makes you scratch your head and wonder why the heck it’s so crowded and noisy. Pass it up unless you’re visiting friends who live in the area.....and even then, if they recommend somewhere else, take their advice.“

“A really mediocre place overall. Their beer isn’t all that good despite the variety, and the food isn’t anything special. The staff was friendly but didn’t really seem too knowledgeable about any of their food or beer and couldn’t even remember the price of their own beers off the top of their head. The place is surprisingly popular and parking, as has been mentioned before, is a big pain in the rear. Being that it’s in Sparta, prices are a bit steep--be aware of that.“

“nice looking place. Have been there before, but not since I’ve been a ratebeer member. Outside of building looks like a really old German or Swiss building, inside like a log cabin. Bartender was very nice and although she didn’t seem to have a very good knowledge of beer, was at least enthusiastic about it. Beers are for the most part below average- haven’t had a good beer yet. The pale ale is drinkable and the oatmeal stout is passable. Food prices are somewhat high. Worth going to, to check out the building and that is really about it.“

“A very cool looking brewpub adorned with dark wood and rustic flavor. Reminded be of what a medievel pub night look like. Right across the street from Lake Mohawk, its worth a visit for the view alone. The brew was decent, but not outstanding. I tried all the brews they had on tap at the time. The one standout was their oatmeal stout. The Brogden Meadows pale ale and Oktoberfest were decent. Stay away from the rest of them. Not drain pours by any means, but nothing to write home about either. The food was very good, and the service very attentive.“

“This place is out of the way for most, but I am but 14 miles away. Situated right on Lake Mohawk in Sparta, it is a rather nice area to go and visit. It is a very old building that was once just a decent beer bar and restraunt that was converted to a brewpub back around ’98 or so. Half the place is dedicated to dining, and the other half is for the bar area. They have a couple of TV’s for sporting events. Bands play frequently, so there can be covers. There is a beer club: every 70 beers you have gets you a plaque and a gift certificate. Beers are rather average, but frequenting this place enough I have noticed a few outstanding batches, so it can be hit or miss when you visit. The food is always good. Staff is friendly and it is a great place for hanging out. You can walk around the lake area while sobering up as well.“

“Situated across the street from Lake Mohawk, you really have to take a drive to find this place. More of a restuarant than a brewpub, as the brewer is also a cook. The beers were average at best. Valet parking is available in the evenings, as parking is slim.“
