44 /100 7 PALMYRA SQUARE NORTH
“Open plan cocktail bar in one of the red brick terrace properties that define Palmyra Square in the town. This place is handy for the Parr Hall across the Square, which regularly hosts gigs. Modern in design, with modern wood and tile flooring, its an attractive enough place despite feeling a little low-key in location. Four lesser obvious macro keg beers available.“

“Corner pub a block beyond the western edge of the Golden Square Shopping Centre. Lots of windows make it quite airy in daylight hours, with the action around a 'Cheers' style central bar taking up much of the space. 7 craft keg are available on its shorter length side, upto 5 cask ales on one of its longer lengths. You're currently likely to find 4T's ales here amongst a wider selection.“

“Late night 'bar' appearance with leather backed seating at its front, behind this its long cocktail bar against the side wall sports keg only options - four solid macro, but nothing new for me on the often seen crafted other eight. A fridge with limited craft at its rear. A Tiny Rebel non alcoholic was the only new beer for me here.“

“Opposite the Wetherspoon pub on Buttermarket Street and practically the last building on the road on that side. Sporting a sports bar look maybe a couple of Holts keg might suffice here but there's not much else to see.“

“Double roomed traditional style urban pub popular with locals. It has a central bar serving both areas and is one of the better cask venues in the town centre with plenty of crafted efforts from regional brewers including specials.“

“In a tired looking building on the underdeveloped commercial section of the town centre's Buttermarket Street, its look is currently not helped with it being opposite the now wasteground of the former New Town Offices. A later night venue with a worn looking inside, it's functional for the crowd it attracts. Macro keg only.“

“In a building that survived the Golden Square Shopping Centre development behind it, it's a corner pub with a chain style traditional appearance. Macro keg and Old Speckled Hen on its one cask when I visited.“

“Red-brick corner pub on the main roundabout after the A49 crosses the River Mersey. Still very much a time warp pub expect working blokes and horse racing punters watching the races on the television. It's a pleasant enough part carpeted place but only macro keg. Mansfield Dark may possibly be a lesser seen option if it remains on. Pool table at the rear.“

“Last building on Church Street before the A49 dissects it from the town centre. This is a vastly different pub now to the one when I used to go clubbing as a teenager at at The World nightclub across the road! Modern and sympathetically traditional with a heavy wooden appearance, its walls are full of sports photos, shirts and rugby balls from regional clubs. Live sport is naturally shown too in a room somewhat uncomfortably cluttered with its own furniture - so plenty of places to sit! Oakham had a tap takeover on its 8 cask pumps when I visited - a 4Ts special was available on keg. Darts fans might make a pilgrimage here as Luke Littler spent time honing his trade in this place.“

“Inside the new indoor market hall that replaced the atmospheric old version that was very tired looking back in the 1980's. It occupies one corner with plenty of tables in front. Worthwhile craft cask and keg are well represented here.“

“Classic corner pub building opposite the bus station on the cusp of the commercial centre. The front part of the pub with its large glass windows remains the most traditional part, beyond is the bar against the outer wall and although sympathetic to the older building is a touch more modern. Macro keg only.“

40 /100 67 WINWICK ROAD
“Purpose built historic 20th Century pub building opposite the Rugby League stadium, benefitting from the club's move from Wildespool into the new arena. This is built on the old Tetley's Brewery premises and the pub used to be their flagship venue opposite the giant brewing facilities that would regularly make the area smell of hops. It's now had a modern makeover, open plan around a three-sided central bar offering up macro keg only.“

“Opposite the entrance to Warrington Central station, this old pub building with a tiled front has had a makeover inside, looking fairly modern but retaining some of the old features of the historic building. Open plan with a musty smell, it's a functional locals pub serving only macro keg. Useful for the Rugby League as the stadium is close by.“

54 /100 29 OLD MARKET PLACE
“Historic pub opposite the old covered Market Square and one of the few buildings to survive the Golden Square shopping centre that now envelops it. Multi-spaced but open plan and remaining traditional in style, there's however lots of modern touches in here including television sport. Chain style pub food with outdoor seating in the Square available. Regular national cask and a couple of craft keg options available.“

White Hart (Restaurant)

“On the western side of the Golden Square shopping centre, this is a plush traditional style pub pushing for mainly those wishing to eat, so many of the tables will have reservations on them for certain times, but if you can find a spare place to sit a drink is just fine. The drinks selection is limited here to mostly macro brews and a Marston regular cask. Some Beaverton craft keg and a craft keg cider offer up the best options.“

“One of the first micropubs in town. I’ve been here a few times, but my recent visit was the first since Covid. It’s on the main road out of town west, on a corner by the start / finish of the pedestrianised area. It is pretty small and the central bar takes up most of the available space. However, there is (limited) seating on all four sides. Bare brick walls – and brick bar ! Various old prints on the back wall, and other miscellania scattered around. Nice lived in vibe. As previous raters have said, beer offering is concentrated on cask ale. However, the number offered has definitely declined. Fin says 10 (though I don’t remember that many ever). Now there are only 5 handpumps and only 3 of these were in use. This was the only place on my recent trip that I didn’t manage to get a tick – though two of the beers were from Stockport and Lords – so still quite possible I would think. Also a couple of craft kegs and a couple of ciders. I couldn’t see any cans / bottles though. Beer quality was excellent. This is (so far) my favourite place in town, but it did seem to be noticeably emptier than the other places I visited. Only one other person in at 2pm on Saturday… EDIT - just discovered that they on ly open at 2pm on Saturdays now ! Definitely worth a visit – as long as you can take the possible disappointment of there not being any ticks !“

“Traditional old style boozer on the upper end of Buttermarket Street. Is almost two pubs in one, as the two entrances lead to separate rooms, and the only connection is round the back of the central bar. Decor is very plain – dark red and white. There are some tables and chairs, and bench seating round the outside in places, but many people stand at the bar. Each bar has 5 handpumps, but the beers are not duplicated – so a total of 10. There is a chalked list behind the bar giving details. They used to have their own Twisted Angel brewery, but no longer. On my latest visit there were a total of 6 beers from Liverpool Brewing Co, plus one from the associated Team Toxic. But I’m not sure how typical that is. Beer quality is excellent. Have to say that the clientele are somewhat rough and ready ! Probably the most likely place in town for ticks – but I wouldn’t go there otherwise. “

“Small bar at the lower end of Buttermarket Street – opposite the Looking Galss Wetherspoons. The bar is slightly to the left from the entrance, and occupies most of the space. There some stools for sitting at the bar, a few small tables in the window in front of it, and a few larger ones down the right hand side (on the way to the loo) – and that’s it. Decoration is fairly minimal. There are 4 handpumps, but only 3 were in use on my visit. Two of the beers were from Weetwood and Box Steam – but I assume they change regularly. Real ales were only available in dimpled glasses. There were a few craft bewer taps as well – but I didn’t make note of those. No food. Clientele a bit dubious, and seemed to spend most of their time standing outside smoking. It’d OK, but not really worth going out of your way to visit. “

64 /100 STALLS 30 & 31, WARRINGTON RETAIL MARKET, BANK STREET
“Right. The first thing to mention is that the previous description and photo are now totally wrong ! The market has been totally rebuilt with a Cookhouse area at the front. From the main entrance, turn left and the Hop Emporium is in the far corner. There’s a long bar up against the far wall. There are 4 hand pumps. ON my visit there were beers from Fyne and Distant Hills (a stout), plus a house beer (which I believe is brewed by Beartown). There are two ranges of 6 craft fonts – however these appear to be mostly macro craft. Also, a selection of cans displayed at the end of the bar (plus fridge behind). It doesn’t serve food, but you can order from the other Cookhouse stalls . There are about a dozen, including Mexican, Pizza and Thai. Seating is communal and can be rather cramped. Opening hours are as per the Cookhouse area. I believe this now includes Sundays and some evenings. Defintiely worth a visit – unless you suffer from claustrophobia ! “

“Nice place, plenty of beers to choose from including main stream products as well as Craft. Good range of gins and Rums too. We were in on a friday and it was fairly busy plus they had a DJ on who was playing some classic Funk & soul songs from the 80s. Nice feel to the place, we will be attending again very soon“

“At first glance, this little boozer looks smaller than it actually is (there's a fair bit of seating behind the bar area). There's a bit of keg (Thornbridge AM:PM being the only proper 'craft' keg) and bottles (Crazy Mountain, First Chop, Stevens Point), but this place is all about the cask: Lytham, Cross Bay, 4T and Potbelly on my visit. Service is friendly and quick; it's got 'that vibe' that makes a good pub. Destination? Maybe not, but if you have time by all means stop by.“

Hop Co (Bar)
6 BOLD STREET
“Hop Co is one of those wonderful trendy yet cosy pubs, with Nick Drake playing to accompany your beer appetite. The planned in-house brewery isn't quite operational yet (looking like Christmastime 2018) but never fear, Hop Co have plenty of good beer in the meantime. Solid North-west breweries like Northern Monk, North, First Chop and Alphabet on keg and can/bottle (with a Mikkeller bottle as well). And they have the heating on for this unexpectedly cold and rainy September afternoon. Easily the best beer pub in town.“

“Has the feel of a somewhat sterile sports bar, but this is indeed the brewpub for 4Ts (4Ts apparently stands for 'The Tavern's Tasty Tipples'). The selection of beer is better than I'd expected, with three 4Ts beers on cask and two on keg, plus some cask and keg delights from mostly Northern microbreweries. There look to be some 4Ts bottles and cans to take away as well. It's that little bit more out of the way than some pubs on here, but I'd recommend stopping by if you can, especially as I've not seen this brewery outside of Warrington except at festivals.“

“The Lower Angel is a small, traditional two-room boozer in the shopping district. No piped music but BBC1 is on the TV in the public bar. Beer choice was good enough: Partners, Derwent, Wincle and the like (sessionable and solid). Beer is well kept, staff and customers are friendly. Not a massive beer destination but you'll likely get ticks, so it's certainly a good place to sit down and have a beer or two.“

“Previously called the Real Ale Shack. Try to stop by here if you're in Warrington. A neat little bar in the middle of the indoor retail market, so it closes at 5.00 sharp, although many Warrington pubs don't open until later on a Thursday so this is perfect for me. You have a choice of a couple of cask beers (4T and Magpie on my visit), a couple of keg beers, and some bottles & cans. Some of the latter are ubiquitous (Beavertown's core range), others less so (lots of First Chop, Gyle 59 and more 4T). Friendly, and you get to gaze out at the fishmongers if you so desire.“

“Close to the Halliwell Jones Stadium on the A49 as you enter Warrington from the North, it's a nice enough shop within this chain with all the beers and ales currently on the first set of shelves as you enter on the left. It's all multi-packs and most of the selection available is well-known stuff, with some decent craft beers amongst this, with a couple of things I'd never seen before in very simple packaging that might be exclusive to this chain.“

“Visited on 30th July 2017. Solid proper old boozer in Warrington Town Centre, It’s got a central bar with rooms each side, had 8 handpulls on with a decent range of local cask beer. The pub is a nice old trad boozer, a little rough around the edges but smart enough. Beer prices are good, service good. Definitely one to visit in Warrington.“

“One of the first pubs I visited when I came of legal age back in the 90’s. I haven’t been back since that decade but it’s an interesting purpose built building opposite one of the Wetherspoon pubs by Bridge Street. It has a car park and does well from the town’s nightlife that is centred around this part of Warrington.“

“Me, Loz, Jude, Baz, Georgia and Fern the dog visited the The Palmyra on Saturday 28th March 2015. Whilst this isn’t really a pub as such, it’s more of a small cocktail/bar that sells some beers, we all liked it and so I felt like it should be added. There are sixteen to bottled beers and four taps. The tap choice wasn’t exciting, there was Kaltenburg Royal Lager, San Miguel, Peroni and another. However the bottle choice was better with reliability provided by Brewdog Punk IPA, 5 AM Saint, Chimay Blue, Duvel, Meantime Chocolate Porter etc. There was also a Large range of spirits. A DJ mixing deck in the corner suggests that this might be busier later. It was quite dark inside, it’s small, the bar staff was friendly and he didn’t have an issue with us bringing the dog in here, he even got her some water. The bar is situated on the square of the same name (as bar). It’s a bit pricey for the bottles, I guess the tap choice would have been better value for money. It’s simply furnished, another place that requisitions old items and puts them to use again. Liked it here.“

“Me and Loz along visited the The Lower Angel on Saturday 28th March 2015, the others had nipped back home to take Fern (the dog) back and to get tarted up for our meal this evening. The Lower Angel was a very busy pub it is pretty central on Buttermarket St as I recall, so easy to find. One negative on entering was that the carpeted floors unfortunately leave a slight stale beer and sweaty smell which is a shame, I have never been a fan of carpeted floors in pubs. I guess that you could say that the clientele in here were of an older demographic (we were the youngest by some distance) on this subject, it was amusing as two young T-shirted lads, clearly out on a pub crawl came in here had a quick look about and having whispered something to each other, clearly about the age of the other customers then proceeded to make a sharp exit. It was very friendly, with lots of chat and seemed a really, honest down to earth working class pub. We wondered where the historic ghost photo was which Loz read about on the red plaque behind the bar, I went searching for it on both this room and the other connected room, walking around the entire pub until I got back to our seat and realised we were sat directly underneath it. The photo is over a hundred years old and shows the then landlord and his young son stood by the door/entrance to the pub but at one of the windows a ghostly face (apparently) peers out, the present landlord could see we were interested so came over and talked about it to us, but it was difficult to see as the light was streaming into the pub from outside. The beer choice was quite good, I can’t recall how many they had on tap, I had one of their own beers which was really nice, Loz had a Mallinsons Waimea also very good. We both liked it here, I should like to come again when it’s a little quieter and have a good look around as it appears quite a historic pub that hasn’t been tampered with too much. It’s worth mentioning also that the staff were very friendly.“

9 Gallon (Bar)
76 SANKEY STREET
“Me and Loz along with Jude, Baz, Georgia and Fern (the dog) visited the 9 Gallon on Saturday 28th March 2015. We sort of stumbled across this place, it is fairly close to the centre on the way to The Golden Gates and also just up a bit from Palmyra Sq (sort of), there is a second hand record shop next door, we had a quick look in there but both Loz and I can’t always be bothered with second hand records and today was one of those days, anyway back to the pub. It is a relatively small bar yet has a rather disproportionately sized large central island bar. There were ten cask beers and two ciders to choose from all displayed on a chalk board on the back wall. The beer choice was pretty reasonable and mostly featuring northern breweries. I had Exit 33 from Sheffield, however Loz did head further south with her choice and chose Netherton and IPA, both of us agreed that mine was best. The decor was fairly tidy with glazed green tiles and exposed brickwork, but there were a few bizarre touches such as a singer sewing machine table where we sat, a Mash Tun behind us and a few other oddities scattered about. Service was good and there were a few folk in here who were friendly enough. I liked it in here, but the layout and the decor gives it a slight quirkiness, which is no bad thing.“

“Specialised in cask beer & cider and whiskeys. Has an island bar with 13 hand pumps (2 for cider) and only 1 keg lager (Brooklyn). Nice dark wood interior. Friendly and talkative staff. Value is very good at around £2.50 per pint. After one visit my only concern is about how well the ales are kept. I will return to check this out again in the future.“

“Large Wetherspoon building set on two floors, although there are very few places to sit on the upper level. The bar is long and caters for a large crowd at the weekends as this is set in and amongst all the bars and clubs the town has to offer, you won’t have to walk far going to or from another pub or club. There are two rows of real ale pumps to choose from. Inside the decor is bright and comfortable.“
