60 /100 Mosto (Bar) VIA DOMENICO RIDOLA 18 An Osteria located on one of the main streets of modern Matera, it is quite a large venue capable of seating about 40 inside at tables and 30 outside at tables. There is also a long bar on one side to sit at. On the night of my visit there were five taps operating with four Italian crafts and one main-stream German, plus there was also an array of cans. Non-beer includes wine, cocktails and soft drinks/soda. Glass size varies on the beer type (20-40cl) and prices are craft beer scene at €3-7 per glass. There is a decent enough meals list at reasonable prices. Service was 'relaxed'. |
80 /100 VIA DELLE BECCHERIE A moderate sized bar on the street side in central Matera that is popular with locals of all ages. Immediately inside is the bar itself where the taps are located and which seats/stands only a few. Inside there are also tables that, in total, seat about 18 (best to book if dining in) while outside is a patio area which seats about 16. There are chalk boards both inside and out listing the current beers available and at the time of my visit there were six beers - four draught and two bottles - all of their own brews. Prices are craft beer scene (€5-6/40cl glass and €5/33cl bottle). No flights are available however bottles can be bought to take away. It is mostly bar service which is attentive to locals while over-all service varies from 'relaxed' to helpful and friendly. Being right in town this is really worth a visit for their beers. |
80 /100 VIA DELLE BECCHERIE Visited 8th April 2018. Good choice of taps and some bottles. We also had burgers and snacks. Decent place and I would go back |
74 /100 Mosto (Bar) VIA DOMENICO RIDOLA 18 In pieno corso sopra i sassi, ottimo locale in una città meravigliosa. |
78 /100 Groove (Restaurant) VIA ROMA, 10 Locale molto curato, ottimo cibo, comodissimo da trovare, bella selezione. |
72 /100 Mosto (Bar) VIA DOMENICO RIDOLA 18 Fairly long modern cave style place near the Sassi in Matera. A good selection of Italian taps and bottles with some foreign stuff as well, it offers a very different selection of beers to Groove over the other side. Didn’t really try the food. Service was friendly though a little slow at times but nothing to bad. Well worth visiting if you’re in Matera along with Grove. |
72 /100 Groove (Restaurant) VIA ROMA, 10 Visited early on a couple of weekday evenings, from around opening at 7pm to around 9.30pm. Fairly quiet with a few locals around, mostly sat on the terrace outside. Groove is a modern bar and certainly doesn’t look like a craft beer destination from the outside, until you step in and see the wall of bottles on the right. The selection isn’t huge, but is good for Southern Italy, with the focus being on imported brews (mostly EU, a couple of US). Supposedly they don’t stock many Italian beers as they’re too expensive, shame. So no real surprises for the spoiled beer nerd, but definitely some nice stuff to drink and some ticks if you’re that way inclined. Service was good, helpfull and friendly. Can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat there. Prices are very fair by Italian standards, with De Molen bottles cheaper than back home in The Netherlands. Definitely worth visiting if you are in Matera. |
54 /100 Camera Club (Bar) VIA SAN BIAGIO Visited around 21.30 on a Wednesday evening. Located very centrally, you walk down some stairs into an open courtyard area with a bar and tables/chairs, from here there’s a covered area and another fairly large bar area, both old Matera Sassi cave style. Of the three Matera places listed on Ratebeer, this certainly has the most charm, but the least selection. You can come here and have an ok beer for a reasonable price, but don’t expect anything unusual. When I visited they had Ciney Bruin, Bitburger, Bear Beer, Guiness and Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest beer on tap, as well as about 5 import bottles. Fairly quiet when I visited but with several locals around, indie rock music played at a reasonable volume and friendly enough service with minimal English spoken. Worth popping in for a drink but isn’t a craft beer destination. Choices are slim in southern Italy though. |
48 /100 Groove (Restaurant) VIA ROMA, 10 Unfortunately for us, we arrived shortly before they were closing for the night. They had about 4-5 beers on tap, but only one I found interesting, but didn’t really care for after tasting it. However, there were many good craft beers on bottle, especially great Italian ones. They even had the local beer from Matera, Jazz. The owner definitely knows his craftbrews and hopefully more people in Matera will start to appreciate craftbeer! Next time I hopw to see some italuan ceaft beer on tap! |
