84 /100 47 ALBION PLACE, CRESCENT
“Just a great place with a cafe, bakery, bar and a next-door brewery. All their beers are served in the bar section, seven of them on tap at our stay. The place and brewery is own by the University in Salford, and were popular by both students and neighbours on a Friday late morning at our visit. After tasting all their beers we were invited to the brewery by the head brewer Changmin Lee, who told us about the place and brewery, opened in the summer 2023, and their plans for the future. Opens early and closes early in the evening. Should not be missed! (Visited with Finn, 22.03.2024).“

UNIT 2 HALOGEN HOUSE, 217 CHAPEL ST
“Immediately west of Salford Central station in a ground floor commercial unit of a new-build block of flats overlooking the railway on its north side, this is fresh, with a clean almost Ikea style appearance, brightly lit with a friendly atmosphere. The bar is central and upon you immediately through its central doors, seating is both right and left of here with the greater amount on the latter, but it's a relatively small venue. It still manages to pack in over a dozen or so options with crafted keg ales prominently found here, backed up by lots of craft can or bottles in its fridges.“

UNIT 2 HALOGEN HOUSE, 217 CHAPEL ST
“Been staying in an apartment in Manchester on Chapel Street. A short walk away is this little gem. On the ground floor of a plush modern apartment block is this cosy, slick craft beer bar. A carefully curated list includes local craft options alongside rarer American imports which included a keg of Cycle Imperial Stout. Reminds my of a bar I might find hidden away in Tokyo. My stay in Manchester is slightly up in the air but if I stay I’ll be a regular here.“

“Kind of a local pub atmosphere to this venue. Had four cask ales (although capacity for 8) and a really good range of keg lines. Cask was in banging form. Will definitely be going back for the quality of the beer. Clientele was local and it was quiet on a Friday night in January when I went in. Locals and bar staff were friendly. Cask beers were Cloudwater, Rudgate and Castle Rock on the night I was in.“

“Incredible place. 2 passionate owners. Friendly and welcoming. On my visit a "Veil" tap takeover. Large selection of cans in fridge. Beers served in proper conidtion. My friends brought a few beers to share and they returned the gesture. A place to track down when in Manchester.“

“Modern built brick building on the end of a much older red-brick terrace housed street just to the south of Salford City Shopping Centre. On my walk to work and was closed for the entirety of the furlough scheme during Covid, but back open now. Has all the brewing gear you'll need for home brews, but seems to push its wine making kits a little more than the beer making ones. Neverthless you can't go wrong here.“

“Corner unit under an amongst many new build flats in Salford on the cusp of Manchester, also with a riverside setting. It's modern, fresh, has lots of natural lighting as its external walls are all windows. The bar against the inner wall is large, but in the post-covid visit it was only selling its own keg ales, although three cask pumps do exist at the bar. The brews were only Seven Brothers on my visit, all of their regulars, no specials or seasonal beers at the time of the visit.“

“Industrial estate brewery just to the north of Media City in the Weaste suburb of Manchester. You can get close by tram. Came here during the pandemic period and everything was outdoor in their courtyard, but the weather was good in September. Had half a dozen taps of their own with a couple of guests from another local brewer. Cans from Marble are available too.“

“We walked here on Saturday 6th October 2018, we were in Manchester for Indyman which we'd attended the previous day. The New Oxford is to the west of the city centre beyond the Lowry museum and Salford Central station, it is on Bexley Square which itself is sandwiched between the Town Hall and the busy Chapel Street which links onto the main ring road. We walked from the Northern Quarter, I think that we were at The Northern Monk so to give you an Idea that is about 25-30 mins walk as it's getting on for a mile and a half. Just checking public transport and note that you could do it in half that time.

The New Oxford is an old fashioned pub, traditional in every way and with cask the main draw in terms of beer, this I am sure would be a CAMRA gem. It's a nice looking brick pub, situated on a corner with some tables and chairs outside, we sat out here in the autumn sun. Inside green leather seats, bar stools, walls festooned with pump clips gave you a good impression of the place which had a healthy amount of punters in at the time, just after lunchtime as I recall.

Whilst I commented on cask there was however a lot of keg pumps though I never really checked these out as we both went for a cask offering. I recall a large chalk board on the wall in this room (I think it was a straightforward two room layout) the chalkboard also showed that there was quite a number of bottled Belgian beers available. We were not that fussed with our beer and were not overly enamoured with the pub and left for a walk to the arches near Piccadilly to head to Beer Merchants. I would definitely come here again as it was a classic pub but just not the thing for us today for some reason.“

“Visited on 11th February 2017. Set back off the main drag in a little square this is a 2 roomed beer pub. Some nice traditional features amidst the modern decor, central bar with a great range of cask and keg beers plus a huge list of Belgian bottles. Place was busy with live sport playing on TV. Beer selection was excellent, service good and prices great value. Really good venue and one I would go back to.“

58 /100 517 LIVERPOOL STREET
“On the north side of the M602 in a dense area of low-rise housing, this is a purpose built latter 20th century public house that looks a lot more fresher than the terraced housing around it, although it’s built to fit in with its surroundings. There’s two rooms either side of a central doorway with a central bar serving both areas. The lounge to the right is a large rectangle room with plenty of comfy leather backed bench chairs against the walls as well as traditional seats and tables in the centre. The bar side is a pretty comfortable area too with the usual set of pub games available in here. Live football is shown in both sides and they have a Manchester United sticker in the window - and this may be your best reason to come here as it’s walkable to the stadium allowing you to try a few Holts beers (as the full range is available on cask, keg and in bottles) before heading to Old Trafford.“

58 /100 350 ECCLES NEW RD
“On the A57 that runs parallel to the M602 motorway on its south side between Eccles and the Regent Road roundabout in Salford, this Sam Smiths pub is the only drinking hole in the immediate area. It’s in a fairly nondescript brick building facing the road that also has the metrolink tram lines running along them. Inside, there’s more care and attention with a selection of rooms emanating from the central square service area that feels like it’s in the hallway. The bar room at the front is less atmospheric than the other couple of rooms with their own door, one with an open fireplace where are ready made fire exists - here you’ll find carpets and comfortable soft furnishings. There’s also a very small separate parlour type room that is outside of the bar area, probably suitable for children as they never have to go in the pub unless they need to use the toilet. Beside this is the car park to the side of the building that can hold a couple of dozen cars, but in reality it is never full given this is very much a locals pubs. However if you do require a few Sam Smiths ticks you might find a few here and it’s very cheap. It’s also walkable to Old Trafford if you are in the area for football. A few picnic tables exist between the pub and the car park.“

DIGITAL WORLD CENTRE, 1 LOWRY PLAZA, SALFORD QUAYS
“Occupying the first unit in the outdoor plaza of the Lowry Shopping Centre, it’s also the closest to the gallery of the artists name. This is a much more relaxed bar than Lime next door that has a mix of bland drinks and televised sport. Of the two this is the only place you can find cask ale which is on three pumps that rotate, at least one of which (maybe two) will be a Brightside brewed ale. It’s worth taking a moment to look at the bottled selection in the fridge as there’s some decent options in here too It’s a single open plan unit with a large ceiling with a comfortable funky coffee shop feel to it, and a few outdoor seats that have natural covering by the building.“

70 /100 BLUE TOWER, MEDIA CITY UK, THE QUAYS
“In one of the commercial units underneath one of the main media buildings that shot up when the BBC announced its move to Salford, this is the latest of several food and drinking joints that are now taking advantage of the affluent workers and apartment block residents that are now a staple of the area. The concrete shell of the large high roof open plan room is still evident and nothing has been added to the floor or the ceiling since it was built, however the huge wooden timber frames that have been put inside the room do create a fairly funky but relaxed ambiance for the place with traditional wooden pub type tables, chairs and stools as its furniture. It’s clearly going for a more affluent customer and the prices match. There’s 8 hand pumps here with a good rotation on most, although you’ll always find a Thwaites knocking about on the pumps as they provide the ’Dockyard’ house ale that is available as well as the keg lager house brew. There’s a few good bottle options here too. There’s a patio outdoors if the Manchester weather is dry enough which is close to the Blue Peter Garden.“

58 /100 367 BOLTON ROAD
“The last of three Holts pubs within a couple of hundred metres of each other on the Bolton Road away from Manchester. This is a livelier affair than its neighbour The Wellington despite having a similar set-up. The lounge and bar sides are separated by a central service area that has cask, keg and a good range of Joseph Holt bottles to choose from making it a decent start or end point if you wanted to to a mini Holts pub crawl with the three that exist close together on this road. Live football is shown here and it pulls people in on both sides of the pub with the very comfortable large open lounge room being the most relaxing area to sit in.“

60 /100 345 BOLTON ROAD
“The middle of three Holts pubs all in a row on the Bolton Road in Salford. This one offers a better range of Joseph Holt drinks than the Red Lion and the atmosphere is more relaxed than its two neighbours. The modern mid 20th century building is nothing special in itself but it has very comfortable furnishings throughout that have a fresh updated feel to them. The lounge area is a large single room that is fully open with no pillars or posts in the eye line. The central serves this area and the bar section to the rear. Like its neighbours live football is shown here although more people will probably be next door in the Waggon & Horses when it’s on than in here.“

58 /100 279 BOLTON ROAD
“On a local road that runs parallel to the dual-carriageway A6 which is one of the better roads in and out of Manchester, this is a Holts pub that is the first of three all within spitting distance of each other if you are heading out of the city. It’s quite a large self-standing building and you’re given the choice of ’lounge’ or ’vault’ to enter at the entrance. You can get between both once your in but the central bar area serves both sides. The actual Vault as you enter on the left is tiny compared to the lounge which makes up most of the ground floor space and both sides have television screen which show the live football so the main different between the two is the dartboard and pool table that only exist in the traditional ’bar’ area. There’s lots of places to find your own space in here and a car park at the side next to the small rear garden area. Holts ales are available in cask and keg only here.“

52 /100 105 LIVERPOOL STREET
“This Holt’s pub is away from residential area, surrounded mainly by smaller businesses on the long Liverpool Street that runs parallel with the main Regent Road artery into Manchester. It’s an older traditional town pub building that has outlasted many of the buildings that are now long gone from this area, but some of the features are still there including fireplaces. There’s a couple of rooms to enjoy although in reality there’s not much reason to make a beeline for this place unless you are in the area. There’s is a relatively new Holiday Inn close by may benefit this pub. Holt’s ales available.“

A comfortable pub with four interesting hand pumps. The Salford Arms smelt very new when we visited in January 2013 but it’s been renovated sympathetically. There’s a spacious bar off the side street, open plan but with separate areas and some original features. There’s a pool area and a comfy living room space with squashy black sofas and a fireplace. Newspapers are provided in a rack on the wall. At the front there’s a more traditionally earthy looking bar which was closed when we were there as it looked as if they were tidying up after a party. The four beers we tried were all in good condition. One, the Salford Arms Ale, is brewed especially for them by Black Iris. (Visited 25 January 2013).“

“Veritable music pub with a very good selection of real ales to choose from whilst you enjoy the sounds. In the daytime it is a decent Bohemian-style venue to chill-out in, in a historic red-brick building that has survived the modern make-over that is swamping this part of Salford just across the river from Manchester’s city centre. There’s a couple of rooms to sit in and the upstairs is used for comedy and theatre. Food is served from Friday to Sunday.“

64 /100 146 CHAPEL STREET
“Just a few yards away from the northbound exit of Salford Central station, this building is on the opposite corner of the crossroads. The building has the feel of a traditional pub although the interior design favours leather backed chairs stools and sofas to give it a slightly more modern bohemian appeal. It seems to do well from the students that are aplenty in this area and shows live sport as well as providing other late night entertainments that promote drinking and dancing. Ale is served on three hand-pumps and beer drinkers will find Kozel from the Czech Republic on tap here. There is a small courtyard to the side of the building that provides an outdoor space. This is also a hotel as the name suggests. A pool table takes up one part of this open plan ground area that has a few large wall pillars to break up the space.“

48 /100 CAPITAL QUAY
“This place appeared as part of the regeneration of Salford Quays that continues to this day. It is part of a small selection of restaurants off Trafford Road, but the only one that offers the pub experience when dining. The building is purpose built and freestanding right next to the tram stop and offers a chain menu. There’s plenty of drinks available and although its mainly set-up for diners the bar area with its low lighting and comfortable seating is just as good for simply drinking. There’s no shortage of people in here when Manchester United are playing, instead you’ll struggle to find space pre and post match. There’s no other pubs close by so profits from that too.“

54 /100 2 GORE STREET
“Along a small street opposite the entrance to Salford Central railway station, this is a pub with features and decor from yesteryear, but friendly enough. The bar welcomes you as you enter the central door, to the left is the pool table and homage to Manchester United on all the walls around it. To the right is the majority of the seating exists with a slightly odd layout including large circular leather backed booths. This is a Joseph Holt pub so it serves its own ales.“

“A short walk across the river from Manchester city centre, this bar occupies are rounded corner building in an area that is slowly receiving regeneration, although the footfall is still fairly light which is surprising given its proximity to all the action of the big city. The building is one of the older ones remaining here and inside the bar welcomes you as you enter the central doors, seating areas are either side of this. it can feel slightly Bohemian in style with young beard scratching 20 somethings enjoying a lager and music themed pictures on the wall - there is new age WiFi though! There’s a couple of real ales at the bar and plenty of taught leather backed bench seating along the walls to relax on.“

“In a small square set back from the main road and opposite the Magistrates Court. This pub has is distinctly modern in design and furniture, although sitll uses a traditional wooden decor. The real appeal is its selection with hand pumps galore including plenty of local brewers as well as an extensive bottle collection of ales. Lager drinkers are just as well catered for and the row of electric pumps are not the usual dross you find in most places.“

50 /100 146 ORDSALL LANE
“On Ordsall Lane, and a dying breed of local pubs on the edge of a large housing area, this is a freestanding building for its purpose. Inside there are two areas as the traditional form takes, including a smaller bar and large open best room area with all the chairs and tables along the three walls of the room. The bar occupies the central wall of the room which has nothing in its central space, more than useful for a dance space when the disco is on at the weekends. There’s a television screen for entertainment at other times. It’s traditional in more than one sense as some locals are still happy enough to smoke inside despite the change of law, although there is a patio area at the rear which would suit that purpose just as well. As this is a Joseph Holt pub its own ales are available with its Smooth and Black brands a good choice.“

“A large, rather sterile pub with a limited choice of beers. The Black Lion is on a corner, just in Salford so an easy walk from Manchester city centre At one time it was run by the New Oxford people but only for about a year and it reopened in 2011 as a pub-cum-community arts centre. Apparently there are three business partners, one of whom was formerly a brewer at Bazens’. It’s surprising then that the beer choice is so limited and, frankly, not very interesting There are about five hand pumps, two of which were off when we were there. Perhaps they concentrate more on the arts and the food – a £3 roast was advertised (“Don’t want to stick your hand up a chicken’s arse? Come to the Black Lion – home of the £3 roast!”) alongside daily specials. I like to support community pubs but this one, although clean and bright, lacks atmosphere and if I were to venture over the river into Salford again I’d go straight past, onwards and upwards to the New Oxford. “A fairly plain pub with six handpumps offering a range of interesting beers. The Kings Arms is in a side street just over the river from Manchester, in a run down area of Salford that hasn’t yet benefited perceptibly from the widely proclaimed EU regeneration money earmarked for Salford. The pub has the basic, fairly unadorned look of a working men’s place although it also has a feel of faded grandeur, particularly in the high ceilinged main room where a dark maroon banquette sweeps round the curved wall. The decor is unusual – a collection of “do not disturb” tags from hotel rooms, a small collection of teasmades (does anyone use those anymore?) and a couple of mismatched flying ducks flying in opposite directions. The short food menu – vegetarian curry, soup, pies and the intriguing dragon’s egg – looked good although we didn’t try it. (Visited 20 January 2012).“

“An appealing two room pub with a great selection of well kept beers. The New Oxford is just off a rather dismal main road but in a pleasant little square bounded on one side by the old Salford Magistrates Court and on two sides by once elegant red brick houses. The bar of the pub straddles two rooms, with the main room entered from the corner. Apart from some attractive art deco stained glass panels, a few Lowry prints (this is Salford, after all!) and some old photos, it’s fairly plain inside but homely, comfortable and relaxed, with very friendly service. To add to this, there’s an impressive selection of cask beers. When we were there during the Winter Ales Festival week there were 9 hand pumps on each side of the bar with additional beers straight from the cask brought up from the cellar on request. The turnover was very rapid so the beer list was constantly changing and tickers were in abundance. One couple were happily occupied in the corner decanting their pints into bottles via a plastic jug and stashing them in a rucksack. The pub serves basic food and doorstep sandwiches at reasonable prices but I can only vouch for the chips, which were good. (Visited 20 January 2012).“

“Impressive pub close to Salford Cathedral, not far from Manchester city center. Two rooms with the bar in the middle. 18 handpumps with beers mainly from British micro breweries, another 14 taps with interesting beers from Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and so on. Just 3 crap taps (which I usually don’t bother counting). Oh, and then they have an impressive selection of bottled beers, mainly from Belgium and Germany. Very good pub food. Very friendly and efficient staff with a good idea of what they’re serving. Mainly inhabited by friendly locals, some students and one or two beer hunters. Lovely place, a must visit when in Manchester.“
