Flemish Ale / Flanders Red Ale Brewed with Cherry Juice

This beer was developed in collaboration with Michael Jackson for his Rare Beer Club in 2004. Zoetzuur - meaning sweet-sour is a beutifully balanced Flanders Red Ale. The sweet component in the beer is the light addition of Belgian Kriek (cherry) juice, while the sourness comes from the use of the lambic-like Brettanomyces yeast (sic!). This is a reddish-amber ale with an off-white head. It has a complex aroma of fruit as well as a spicy earthiness from the yeast. It is medium-bodied on the palate wiht sweet notes followed by lightly sour notes and a surprisingly dry finish. This subtle and elegant beer is a classic example of the brewmaster’s art.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2022 The aromas are caramel malt, yeast, spice and a hint of cherry. Flavors are similar to nose, quite mild and balanced. Lightly sweet tart with a little bitter and good carbonation to balance. Barest hint of cherry. Smooth body and finish follows flavors. Easy drinking.

25/XI/17 - 75cl bottle @ Sebletitje's post-“Vini, Birre, Ribelli 2017” dinner (Brussels) - BB: n/a (2017-1986) thanks to Kraddel for sharing the bottle!

Pretty cloudy reddish muddy brown beer, small irregular beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: pretty acidic impression, vinegar notes, bit oxidized, dusty. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: oxidized start, soft acidity, sweet touch, dried fruits, some caramel, more oxidation. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, spicy touch, oxidized beer. Well, we didn't have a date on the bottle, but I suppose it's safe to assume this was still the 2004 version. And it has not kept very well.

Bouteille 75cl, merci Kraddel. @ Sebletitje post-Vini, Birre, Ribelli 2017. Wow, talk about an insult to flander's red.

Thanks to kraddel! 750 ml. bottle sampled @ Sebletitje post-“Vini, Birre, Ribelli 2017” dinner. Hideous poor, murky mud ditch water Coca-Cola sludge appearance. Smells & tastes like the bottom dregs yeast poor of a bottle, the whole of it, this was anything but a bottom poor. Nose is sweet sour spoiled yeast, ditch water, murky, prune juice, murky,… Murky Coca-Cola prune ditch water, yeast, spoiled cherry, plum & prune juice, spoiled yeast all the way, murky ditch water body. A clear slide from the usual De Proefbrouwerij standards or it always tastes like this & the Americans love it for some weird reason?

Pours unclear, muddy amberbrown. No head. Smell is sweetish, cherry, oak notes, mild tart. Taste is full, sharp, caramelly, cherry, oxidized, even though it shoudl be quite fresh. Portorized. Not great at all. Dont like it.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy reddish orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tart cherry, cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, lime, pear, apple, plum, red grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, oak, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light pepper/leathery funk, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy/funky yeast, cherry juice, and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart cherry, cranberry, strawberry, raspberry, lemon, lime, pear, apple, plum, red grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, oak, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light pepper/leathery funk, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light fruity/acidic tartness and yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, berry, lemon, lime, pear, apple, plum, red grape, fruit skin, hay, straw, grass, oak, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy/funky yeast, cherry juice, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light dryness from tart/tannic notes, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, fairly acidic/tannic, and slightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 7%. Overall this is an outstanding fruited Flanders red ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/earthy/funky yeast, cherry juice, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the balanced acidic/tannic flavors. Very complex on the Brett flavors, with lighter underlying lacto presence. A highly enjoyable offering.

Brick red. Cherry and light funk in the aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor has a decent helping of lightly tart cherry, mild sourness, earthy, light wood. Medium dry finish. I’d like a little stronger profile of everything.

Murky, reddish brown. Wispy, laced light beige head. Tart cherry, pepper aroma. More cherry throughout, notes of sweet tea.

Pours auburn-brown, hazy but clearing, with big tan that leaves attractive lacing and persistent skim. Nose is flowers, funk, cherries, earth. Taste is well-balanced malt sweetness over sour kriek. With aeration, brett plays the wild card with browning apples, iron, lemon, honey, leather all having their moments alongside the tart cherries. Brief bitter dry note before clean finish. Not the deepest flavor profile, but what is there shows well, especially approaching room temperature.
