COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Very few American breweries produce dunkels, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to help set things right. This is the beer that made Munich famous. The challenge is getting the color right without using too much black malt, as this beer shouldn’t display that character. We use 90% Munich Malt in the grist, along with a small amount of Amber and Caramel Malt and less than 1% Carafa (a German Black Malt). The beer is dark brown/red in color, with both malt and subtle hop aromas. The beer shows strong and complex malt character, with a hint of milk chocolate. The hops take a back seat to the malt, and only keep things in balance. This beer is great with aged cheeses like cheddar and gouda, sauteed mushrooms, or braised meats and sausage. UPDATED: JAN 1, 2024 16 ounce can from Tavour. Reddish brown pour. Frothy light tan head. Toasted malt nose. Sweet, toasty malt flavor comes across smooth and flavorful. Hints of cocoa and toasted bread. Some spicy hops on backend. Outstanding example of the style.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2023 Poured from a 16 oz can dated October 04, 2023. Aroma is malt forward with nice notes of toasted bread, graham crackers and lighter notes of caramel and toffee. Hints of herbal, grassy hop notes and light alcohol notes. Pours a lovely auburn color with amber and ruby hues on the edges with a medium sized, thick, creamy, tan head that recedes slowly to a small film that lingers. Moderate lacing and faint legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with nice malt notes of toasted bread and caramel with lighter graham cracker and toffee notes. Hints of chocolate as it warms. Medium low bitterness and light alcohol notes. Medium light herbal, woody hop notes that linger in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a solid dunkel. Really nice malt profile supported by a bit of a hop note. Alcohol is well hidden and bitterness is balanced.

tmoreau (9895) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - MAR 3, 2022
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2022 Shared pint can poured to a snifter showing a clear, burgundy/amber color, with a presentable layer of soft white froth, and spots & strands of lacing. The nose was grain/malty, light toast, slight dried fruit, and subtle caramel. A bit less than medium bodied, the taste was similar notes, with fair carbonation, a bit of thinning texture, and light, grainy & earthy bitterness. Fair wow factor as a decent enough Dunkel.
