Pours a hazy amber with a full white head that laces. Nose is faint resin. Body is medium. Taste is light resin, citrus fruit and dry. After taste is slightly bitter. It's a decent standard IPA with an ABV above the session range. Getting bored with the hoppy NEIPAs of which I've brewed 10 and tasted many. 12 oz bottle Coded: 100425 MPN 1774 A beer Across America 7/21 selection.

Candied plum and some sweet tobacco. Murky brown pour with ok head. Doesn't balance very well - a bit of a mess. Candy syrup probably doesn't help. Sweet and tangy finish, but not in a good way. Can.

Pours somewhere between amber and mahogany, thick, light beige head. Nose is earthy, caramel malts, toasted cereal, cardboard. Not til the taste that I get any dark fruitiness but it's there...not bad.

Poured from a can, part of a quarterly beer delivery club. Appearance is brown colored body, with a strong tint of red. One finger of light tan head, which sticks around as an island and ring. Leaves behind some strings of lacing. Aroma of sweet candi syrup, dark malts, and slight plum. Taste of semisweet plum and dark malts. Thicker mouth feel, with a syrup texture. Has a numbing effect on the tongue. Very good carbonation. A pleasant winter sipper, with a heavier body and a taste that is not too sweet. Enough alcohol to create a warming effect as the beer is consumed. Nice beer!

Taste: caramel, bread, ripe fruit sweetness, and a mild bitterness. Palate is medium bodied beer. Crisp throughout. Overall a drinkable summer beer.

16 ounce can. Pours like root beer. Rocky tan head. Roasted malt nose is subtle with notes of dark fruit and brown sugar. Roasted malt flavor. Notes of dark fruits and toffee. There is a sour component here, presumably from the plum purée. This tastes like a Belgian dubbel without the layers of complexity. Earthy notes and a hint of unsweetened chocolate. Decent.

Smells like very light sugar plum...taste is very strong coffee and dark roasted malts off the bat...much more roasted flavor than I thought...expected very sweet but if anything it's a little bitter and finishes that way too...strong roasted malt beer

Can. Pours dark brown/black with a small beige head. Aroma is dark fruit and malt, a bit toffee-ish. Flavor is also dark fruit and malt, with the titular plum noticeable. Surprisingly not as sweet as the title/description would make you expect though. Definitely a bit sweet, but not cloying. Pretty good.

Can, from Craft+Carry, Manhattan. Pours clear golden with small foamy whitish head, malt aroma, medium carbonation, slightly sour malt taste with a bit of honey flavor, thin body, medium finish. The only gimmick is the high alcohol content.

12 oz bottle, beer of month club, 12/3/18. Clear copper, sticky beige head. Caramel into sticky pine and dry earth. Bit of grapefruit rind as well. Okay overall, I'll drinks the ones I have, but I certainly wouldn't buy it over most local IPAs.

Pretty standard American IPA. Floral aroma is the best feature. The taste is dry and a bit yeasty without much fruit. Nice tingle on the palate with just a dash of sulfur.

12 oz. bottle from hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. Just a little white haze in this golden beer. A white head. Aroma is not distinct but is kind of sugary and floral. Flavor is aggressive and bitter. Big fruit and bitterness. More bitterness than in most doubles. Malts are Pilsner. This is called Alpha Male and it deserves that name.

Alphabet City Alpha Male IPA
2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Slight spicy/herbal presence but a strong honey-lemon sherry aroma. Light malt sweetness. 7/12

APPEARANCE: Pale orange/amber. Very hazy but CO2 visible. Moderate white froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Moderate bitterness throughout. Slightly dry and spicy. A background orange citrus note is obscured by a strong honey lemon tea taste likely due to oxidation. Base malt is lightly sweet, but otherwise nondescript. Probably good fresh, but this palette is muted and unbalanced. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-low CO2. Soft, smooth texture. Slight lingering astringency. Gentle alcohol warmth is surprising since it’s only 6.2% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A pretty generic, insipid IPA that isn’t helped by the fact the bottle is old. Drinkable, but not really enjoyable. 5/10

TOTAL SCORE: /50
