Good beer served cold on a hot day when you're 6 beers deep and it's all starting to taste the same.

Ranfurly Draught
Aroma: Like the toilet after a heavy night. Truly. Appearance: Looks like a beer. Ugly ass cam though. Flavour: Tastes how it smells. Like poo, I guess. But tangy. Makes you gag if you aren't ready for "a real man['s beer]" Mouthfeel: Pretty much like most other beers. A bit more watery. Can't get past the taste though, unless you're already 24 deep. Overall: Awesome. Love it. Wish I had more.

Wild Side Cider Feijoa & Passionfruit
500ml bottle. Pours a pale clear gold with the short lived fizz type head. Aroma is sweet apple juice. Taste is sugar & apples. There is something else there but don't expect to learn what feijoas taste like from this cider. It could be passionfruit or flavouring but the sugar basically drowns it out. A wasted opportunity, try another cider.

Honesty Box NZ Rose Cider
440ml can. Pours a very pale yellow with a fizz & gone white head. Aroma is bland, sweet apple. This is the middle of HB's 3, single variety apple ciders. Not as sweet as the Braeburn, sweeter than the Granny Smith. The Rose cider is very light & a bit how you might expect from a bland eating apple. No evidence of the rose skin (the apple flesh is white/green) in the cider. Totally inoffensive but also pretty boring. For Rose apple lovers only perhaps.

Wild Side Cider Wild Berries
500ml bottle. Pours pink with a hint of brown & the usual short lived soft drink type head of cider. Aroma is berry jam & apple juice. This tastes like NZ cider with some berry jam stirred through it. Whatever berries were cheapest on the day is usually what "Wildberry" means since there in no way on earth that they could use actual wild berries at this price (low). Very similar to those ultra sweet "international" ciders that people insult women by calling them "ladies drinks". For those with a really sweet tooth only.

Honesty Box Granny Smith Cider
440ml can. Pours just slightly paler than the Hallertau equivalent, a really pale straw, crystal clear with a soft drink type head; lots of fizz with no residual at all. Aroma is faint Granny Smith & a bit of wood. This won Best in Class & a sliver medal at the 2017 NZ Cider awards which I struggle to see, but there you go. Very light body & just like the apple it is crisp & juicy but without a lot of flavour. Again like the apple the sweetness is much less than the usual NZ eating apple. Makes for a very simple, light & not too sweet crisp cider. This slightly lower ABV than the Hallertau version & has that strange woody flavour. But as I guess this is made from concentrate it is no better or worse than other Granny Smith ciders. OK.

Honesty Box Braeburn Cider
330ml bottle - it also comes in 440ml cans. Pours a pale greenish gold with almost no lasting head. Aroma is slightly overripe Braeburn apple so I'm guessing this is made from concentrate. Taste is sweet apple & since Braeburn is a sweet eating apple, not a cider apple, this is pretty much as you would expect from mildly fermented juice. Too sweet for me but if you are a fan of Braeburns & like sweetish cider, then give it a go. I recently tried all 3 of the HB single variety cider cans together & while none are standouts or really good cider, this is still the best, if the sweetest. It just has the most flavour.

Wild Side Cider Strawberry & Lime
500ml bottle. Pours a red brown with a very short lived white head. Aroma is sugar, apple & some berry. There is little info on this from Asahi but they say it is NZ apples & natural flavours. To taste it's honestly hard to say due to the sugar; this tastes sweeter than Coke! So not after the craft cider/beer folks, more the international sticky cider market. I don't get blackcurrant or much lime, mainly very sweet apple & generic berry which could well be strawberries. They suggest drinking it over ice, perhaps to hide the sugar. Did I mention it's really sweet?

Boundary Road Brewer's Cut Arabica Dabra Coffee Oatmeal Stout
500ml bottle. Pours black as with a slight brown tinge around the edges & a very cool looking white/deep brown swirling head, which fades fast. Aroma is like a long black, so job done. Taste is more coffee over a light/medium malt base. Not as sweet as many pastry stouts & the bitterness is dialed back. If you want a mid strength stout with the emphasis on coffee then this is hard to beat, certainly at the price (low, from most supermarkets). Not very trendy, as BRB is the craft offshoot of a BIG liquor firm but I'd guess this would rate a point higher if it was from some small craft brewery.

Boundary Road Chocolate Moose
500ml bottle & like the boom dogs, someones has stolen my moose. Pours dark brown with a small brown head. Aroma is chocolate, maybe vanilla & a strange, slightly metallic odour I can't quite place. Slightly thin body off a light base but with lots of chocolate. Definitely a chocolate porter as opposed to coffee or standard. Would have been nice to see them refine it but it looks like the beer has gone with the moose.

Ingredients. 2 pieces of White Toast Bead. Spreadable Butter Marmite Tomato Sauce. Method Take one of the pieces of bread and generously spread the butter on. Next take a small amount of marmite and spread it over the top. Finish with a squirt of tomato sauce. Close the bread with the second piece and put in a microwave oven on high for 15 seconds. Cut into triangles and eat. Then you tell me that the taste doesn’t taste like this beer.

A distinct improvement on the Hoppelganger Brewer's Cut, this is more of an English bitter in appearance and flavour. Orange to brown clear pour, little head, hop forward and slightly bitter, very easy to drink. 500 mL bottle from the store in Rawene.

Shiiiiiiiiite beer. I remember when I was I a kid and used to watch Man vs Wild, one episode he was dehydrated in Masi territory in Kenya his only selvage was squeezing elephant shit into his mouth and getting the liquid to survive. The look on his face reminds me exactly of what I must have looked when I first took a sip of this beer. I feel very sorry for that brewer as they spent a big chunk of their life working towards their craft and bring out this shit.

Aroma: Medium toffee. Medium berries. Appearance: Brilliant, copper body. Medium, off-white head. Good retention. Small bubbles. Flavour: Medium toffee. Medium bitterness. Dry finish with toffee. Mouthfeel: Medium body, Medium carbonation. Overall: I expected a lot more hop flavours and aromas. If you told me this is an Ordinary Bitter, I would be more inclined to agree with you. But as a pale ale this lacks hops. Ignoring the style, the beer is very nice. 330 ml can, poured. Thanks Tanja!

A friend bought a six pack of cans over for the England V All Blacks game. At the time I thought this was ok however just found a left over can hiding in the back of the refrigerator. It’s v drinkable sessional APA just enough hops to be interesting and well matched with sweet malts. Definitely not an XPA but went well with the curry this evening. Pleasant but not profound. Like I said adequate sessional and competitively priced. 3..2

Good tap placard, deep clear auburn. Filmy light khaki head. Malty, dried dark fruit in the aroma. Flavor is a pale shadow of the aroma. A bit watery, slightly candied, slightly tannic, faintly astringent. Bitterness builds on the top of the tongue. This actually grew a little on me as it warmed, so I bumped it up by .2. On tap, Takapuna Pool Hall, Auckland.

Tallboy that I picked up in a strip mall wine shop in Auckland. Decent can. Very pale brew with a lacing white head. Fresh aroma, smells like beer, but with a little eggy underpinning. Very low bittering, fairly sweet, some nuttiness and sunflower seeds. Goes a little flat. Not great, not swill.
