Tom, I can answer most questions about San Francisco. Lived there for 5+ years before moving to London. If you want to enjoy great food, beer, and wine, it’s pretty tough to beat. No car needed to get around SF but you’ll probably want one to visit wineries in Napa/Sonoma as well as Russian River and Lagunitas. September is the perfect time to visit as the summer starts late there.

10 days is probably more than you’d need though so maybe combine it with another city like Colin suggested?

Have you considered Portland? With that time frame I’d be more inclined to go to San Fran then work my way up the coast, can’t beat Portland for beer!
