Well I’ve always wanted to visit the heart of Africa and some less touristy countries there but I was wondering which would be the best country for good beer or ticks?

I guess if you are talking African countries as a whole then South Africa with it’s booming microbrewery scene will clearly provide you with the best selection of microbrewed beers. Outside of that some microbreweries are known in for instance Kenya and Tunisia and a few more places, but I guess it matters how you define heart of Africa...

South Africa is the only place I have been that seems to have anything going on.

Forget it. The only decent beer country in Africa would be South Africa, but that’s certainly not less touristy.

If you want to travel for beer, well, don’t go to Africa. Africa has so much else to offer, though. But if you are in Sub-Saharan Africa, and traveling outside of major cities, you’ll almost certainly come across local fermented beverages if you look for them. I was in Uganda over the summer and had a chance to drink locally brewed banana + sorghum beer, along with a local millet beer. Both were extremely unique and interesting, and really represent more what beer means in this region of the world than some random microbrewery attempting (and failing) to replicate Western brewing.

Yeah, puzzl nailed it. Africa is a dismal continent for beer, except for South Africa and the traditional beers - mostly millet beers in the East and sorghum beers in the West. Most are known by their local tribal names, I’ve come across dolo (known by many different names) in Niger and Mali, normally made by women. Finding it by knocking on any rural hut.

Ethiopia has a couple of interesting beer locations, including the brewery in Harrar, a nice historic market town. Mozambique has one interesting brown beer, Laurentina Preta, and you can get way off the beaten track there. Togo has one tasty lager, and is about as far off the beaten track as you can get without going to Mars.

Good luck!

Hmmmm...I had some friends back in the mid 1980’s and they were flying in and out of most of the countries up and down the west coast. They brought back some interesting beers from The Congo. I am sure they were brewed by Belgians left over from when it was a Colony.
