I love the concept of trying beers from different countries, but I don’t go out of my way to have an indiscernible pale lager just because it’s from another country.

My main goal is styles, of which I recently reached 100.
But there are only 76?
100 on BA.
and you’re very welcome to them, stick the word ’american’ in front of every style and there’s your 100!
why not stick the name of every US state in front of every style as well?
Texan Dark Ale.
5,000 styles - YAY !!!
The number of styles is not set in stone so back off, brother.

I avoid Texas like the plague. Unfortunately I will have to go back to Wichita Falls for work within the next year.

It’s fun, but after having tried beers from lots of random countries that I’ve found on the shelves on local stores, I’ve kind of backed off on making this as big of a priority as slogging my way through a bunch of skunks, oxidized, old light lagers is not really fun, interesting, or informative. I could probably get another half dozen new country rates at stores around here, but I’d probably rather just wait and try to get a beer from them if I’m in those countries or at least maybe somewhere nearby.

So, quite a number of us here. And I agree with what you say: the down side is definitely that you end up (mostly) with pale lagers, many of them totally crappy. But for me, like someone said, it is just amazing finding and drinking a beer from Angola or Bosnia, never minding how it tastes. You can always fix this with some nicer brew after. And another downside is rthe fact, that it gets extra difficult finding new countries when you are around 80 country ticks. Then you really have to resort to trading. But still, a fun hobby, that is.

My goal is all styles and many more regions by the end of the year and also add 10 more countries. Quiet a few boring beers to go through to reach this goal, but as someone else said always cool to think that I am consuming a beer produced in far-away places...

Would you prefer an English back off or an American back off?
I suppose there could be a Scottish back off as well !?

Yep, I’m having trouble finding new country ticks at 84.
Even with all the pale lagers that you must try there are some surprises. I’ve had more surprises than I would have guessed. Here’s one http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/zagorka-special/11946/
Just another facet that makes this fun
