Im hearing that etched glass on he bottom of a beer glass keeps the bubbles going through the beer longer. Sounds ridiculous to me but I wanted to see if that’s accurate before I call this guy an idiot. He’s saying it’s science, I’m saying he’s a hillbilly |
The person making the claim is not an idiot. He is correct. |
Sam Adams claims it does. |

The glasses I have with etching definitely help make my beer go flat faster. |

Originally posted by Cletus Typical for Duvel and it really helps. Put Duvel into a nog etched glass like a common lager glass or standard wine tulip. And you’ll notice it doens’t bubble that much .. |
yeah, sorry man, that guy is right. |
Originally posted by LinusStick It is science. By etching the bottom of the glass, they provide tiny nucleation points for the CO2 to escape solution. |
Originally posted by Cletus Yeah, After typing this I thought that I should have added that the effect the glass has on the beer is probably dependent on the type of beer/initial carbonation level. Heavier carbonated beers like lagers, sours, and other Belgiums (such as Duvel) react more favorably to etched glasses than a big stout, barleywine, or even DIPA. That being said, I haven’t ever had a problem with Duvel losing it’s carbonation before I finish it. Which is part of the reason I consider it more of a novelty, at least in my experience. |
