Im hearing that etched glass on he bottom of a beer glass keeps the bubbles going through the beer longer. Sounds ridiculous to me but I wanted to see if that’s accurate before I call this guy an idiot. He’s saying it’s science, I’m saying he’s a hillbilly

The person making the claim is not an idiot. He is correct.

Sam Adams claims it does.

I bought some Budweiser laser-etched glasses (the Sam Adams were sold out), and while it might do something trivial, I think it’s more novelty than anything.

Pours a Duvel into a Duvel tulip and watch what happens.

The glasses I have with etching definitely help make my beer go flat faster.

You’re not drinking it fast enough then!

Typical for Duvel and it really helps.
Put Duvel into a nog etched glass like a common lager glass or standard wine tulip.
And you’ll notice it doens’t bubble that much ..

It is science. By etching the bottom of the glass, they provide tiny nucleation points for the CO2 to escape solution.

Yeah, After typing this I thought that I should have added that the effect the glass has on the beer is probably dependent on the type of beer/initial carbonation level. Heavier carbonated beers like lagers, sours, and other Belgiums (such as Duvel) react more favorably to etched glasses than a big stout, barleywine, or even DIPA.

That being said, I haven’t ever had a problem with Duvel losing it’s carbonation before I finish it. Which is part of the reason I consider it more of a novelty, at least in my experience.
