It seems that nearly every week, some new Polish beer is on the "highest rated" for the week. Pretty much all of them are rated by Polish raters almost exclusively.

Is anyone else noticing this? Is there a homerism problem in Poland?

Like all of those ultra-rare top-50 Imperial Stouts rated almost exclusively by Americans, you mean? Or more Cigar City-like?

I think it’s a pretty big break away for Polish beer drinkers from Polish lagers to DIPA’s. To actually finally have some beer that tastes of something.

I was at a tasting a couple of weeks ago where we had a lot of Polish beers. Many of them where not rated outside of Poland before and at most one of the raters had more than 1,000 ratings. The lack of raters with high numbers is probably explained by Poland being relatively new to craft beers and to RB, so that’s natural.

We had somewhat mixed results. Some of the higher rated beers were really good, but others were more ordinary. I honestly don’t think this is because of homerism, but more likely that the raters haven’t had so many craft beers before, so to some extent anything different from a Polish lager will be very good and very different.

I think it’s perfectly acceptable.

There was a lot of Italian homerism as well some years ago. As soon as you try different beers from pale lagers you are blown away and super excited. I remember rating tons of beers in the 4-4.5 range in my first RB year.

Poland had Zywiec Porter (and some others) before the craft revolution.

But yes, a lot of these folks are new to all of this, and there likely is a certain amount of homerism. But certainly not the "group-boost ratings so that you can trade/resell beer for more" deals that do happen in the States.

There’s always a degree of homerism and thats not a bad thing, its only when its gets to point people try to super hype beers inthink wait a minute, im fairly sure that when RB made it harder to hit top 50 a few years back homerism stepped it up a gear. Maybe that’s why its gone back to smaller numbers to influence beer scores
