GarrettB	2.6 Alpkönig Gold November 29th, 2016 - I think the end of the Costco German Beer Advent calendar is coming up, but so far the calibre of these beers have been good, and a nice change of pace from all the IPAs. This is a darker brew, taking on the color of wet oak wood, and props up a sizable head that corks my IPA glass. Still the aroma is evident, though faint, with some malt and a bright note of lime. The flavor is lightly characterized by some nutty notes, but also a deeper, sludgier set of tasting notes that play with toffee and darker roasted almonds. It's also notably sweet, cuminating in some cranberry and cherry notes in the aftertaste after the beer warms a bit. Sunday, March 31, 2024
Kleg	4.3 Kartäuser Doppelbock Dunkel 500 ml can #22 from the 2023 Costco Advent calendar. Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a thick beige head and great retention. Great lacing too. Surprisingly faint caramel aroma. I expected a stronger nose. Great malty caramel flavor with a smokey finish. Hop heads need not apply. Super smooth and clean. GarrettB	3 Kartäuser Doppelbock Dunkel November 26th, 2016 - We're nearing the end of the Costco German beer advent calendar, and jumping into another top selection from the box. With its fresh and spritzy aroma and mineral rich smell, I feel like I'm approaching a hot spring, but there's also a savory depth here: caramel, roasted nuts, and a lot of that rich malty goodness that typically comes from Marzens. Smells like brew day at a local brewery. The flavor is more typical of a Doppelbock, with more coffee and roast flavors, alongside some burnt caramel or toffee sweetness. It's quite a bit of flavor, and not what I expected on the nose. But there's a lot to love here. Sunday, March 17, 2024
Kleg	4.2 Memminger Gold Märzen 500 ml can #19 from the 2023 Costco Advent calendar. Pours a crystal clear gold color with a bright white head and great retention. Great lacing too. Standard pale lager aroma with no sulfur notes. Sweet pale malt flavor throughout with faint hops and Euro water in the finish. Just a great, straightforward lager. GarrettB	2.5 Memminger Gold November 15th, 2016 - The next day on the Costco German Beer Advent Calendar is this golden brew, starting with a light and sweet flavor, and a touch of lemonade, bringing a dash of summer to winter. The flavor shows much less of that sweetness, and leaves an abbreviated aftertaste. Even so, there's still a shandy like quality on it, inflated with the fluffy palate. GarrettB	3.2 Alpkönig Weitnauer Märzen November 10th, 2016 - A gift from the Advent Beer Box (I think from Costco), this mellow brew pours a pecan colored brown, and pops up a lovely head - firm enough to start a foam moustache, if one likes. The aroma has a nutty quality with roasted almonds and legumes, and a bitterness to pair off it and remind me I'm drinking a beer. I know these German lagers tend to be less razzle dazzle than American styles but it's nice to sit and appreciate a well balanced beer here and there, and this one gives me that moment of quiet reflection with a little extra emphasis on fine nut flavors. tontalus	3.9 Memminger Weissbier Das Weizen der Memminger Brauerei habe ich im Wildpark Tripsdrill aus dem Plastikbecher verkostet. Es kommt bernsteinfarben, trüb ins Glas. Der Geruch ist hefebetont und frei von Banane oder Nelke. Der Schaum ist feinporig, üppig und standfest. Beim Antrunk guter Hefegeschmack mit leichter Malzwürze, was das Bier interessanter macht. Pours amber to reddish brown with a light beige head. Sweetness from the off, burnt caramel and toffee dominate but also some dark sugars, malt and a little sweet dried fruit. J_man	4.3 Kartäuser Doppelbock Dunkel 500ml can from the Costco 2021 Advent Calendar (given to me by my friend Pei, thanks Pei!). Starts off with a very German Doppelbock aroma of toasted wood and vanilla. The body is a beautiful crystal clear golden amber color topped by a foamy white head. Toasted malt, brown bread, and caramel and brown sugar sweetness followed by vanilla notes and a dry woody, forest floor hop bitterness. There's some butterscotch and dark fruit in the finish with a lasting but light bitterness left behind on the tongue. The flavors here are really well balanced and it nails the style profile. I didn't know what to expect with a Costco beer and some of the other ratings here, but I wish I had a six-pack of this stuff, it's delicious! Thursday, May 26, 2022
