Cask. Roebuck, Sheffield...and then I went to work, once I’d crawled (literally) out of the boozer. I’m shit at pool, but good at being a jammy bastard. The taxi driver got his full whack, the next morning, mind.

Cask @ Dirty Dicks, Halifax. Black with a creamy off-white head. Crisp and easy drinking, but there’s hardly any flavour to it with only a small roasted malt aroma. Feels thin too.

Cask in the Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield. Pours black with a thick cream head. Smooth roast malt flavour. Some sourness suggests this wasn’t in great condition, but none of this brewery’s beers that I tried were.

Cask in the Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield. Pours black with a tan head. Sour off flavours over rides the roast malt notes. Both beers from the brewery I tried were in pour condition. Not a pub or brewer I’ll be looking to revisit.

Bottle, courtesy of Sean at Beer Central. Cheers! Clear, ruby red. No head. Light, fruity, toffee malts. Some light, orangey hop. A bit bready. A bit spicy. Taste is fruity sweet. Some dryness. Light bitter at the end. Just about flat, that probably helps make this feel a bit oily. Finishes spicy dry. If this had any carbonation it could have been a nice beer. As it is, it’s a little hard work.

Bottle. Jet black with a short-lived, beige, head. Plain chocolate, black coffee and liquorice aroma. Full-bodied in the mouth, with more chocolate, something slightly vegetal and a dryish, toasty finish. Good.

Wood Street Gingko Biloba
Cask conditioned at The Turf Tavern, Oxford. Darkish amber with no head. This was a fusty, earthy beer with a distinct boiled vegetable character. Not sure what the Gingko Biloba link is, I wouldn’t imagine it is used in the brewing, but it certainly wasn’t a great beer.

Cask, gravity dispensed, at the Halloween Beer Festival at the Rose & Crown, Sandhurst. Pitch black with a ring of tan head; treacle aroma; sweet with a taste of figs and demerara sugar, and some coffee grounds; then a dry finish with a touch of spice. A good stout.

Wood Street Boojum
Cask handpump at The Wellington, Bedford, Friday 23rd May 2014 we were in Bedford to see Teleman at Esquires. Light gold with filmy white head, wonderfully bitter. Quite lemony, plenty of attitude for such a moderatley low abv beer at just 4.2%. The initial sweetness soon gives over to some bitter lemon. A jolly nice beer in a good and thriving pub. Wood Street Ebony Stout
Cask @ Hillsborough Hotel [200314] [From memory as notes lost]
Black, dense tan head. Aroma was roasted, some dark fruits as I recall. Taste of roasted malts, dark fruits, slight chocolate, remember it as quite fruity, had a slightly odd hint though in there that was occasionally detectable. Body was light to medium, a bit thin. Not bad - I preferred the Red Buckeye on the day (which I did keep notes on the phone)

Taste of red berry fruits, fruity caramel, hedgerow fruits, redcurrant
Palate - light body, little thin, light sweet fruity. Finish of smooth fruity malts, red berry finish
Overall - Found this better than the stout

Light haze on this gold beer, good white head. Palate is light and crisp and semi dry. Light pale malt, dry. Dry floralness witha bit of a soapy edge. Whisper of citrus. Dry finish. Not working for me, too dry and skewed but it’s not terrible either.

Wood Street Blacklocust
Hand-pulled pint in the excellent Sir Robert Peel in Tamworth on 17th Nov 13. The words on the pump clip ’Black Treacle Stout’, give away the colour, flavour and style: yes, this is a black stout with a malty molasses treacle type taste and aroma. ’Blacklocust’, luckily it has no locust feel to it! Looked fine in the UK pint sleeve, a good, lasting full blanket of foam topped off the jet black body. The aroma wasn’t strong but it did have a sweet molasses lead with a mild coffee and chocolate smell behind the aforementioned treacle esters. The semi-sweet nose turns into flavours and they carry the beer along nicely, medium bodied for a Stout, not really creamy or smooth, nor could you say it’s robust, it just seemed right. Overall a well made Stout which I enjoyed.
