On draft at Trio in Kitty Hawk. Pours a clear dark cola brown with a tan head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate. Flavor is bitter roast espresso. Loads of flavor in a low abv beer.

Carolina Beer Co. Cottonwood High Gravity Frostbite
12 oz bottle served in a snifter. (from notes). Pours near black with a decent head that has some legs and leaves bands of lacing on the glass. Aroma: as expected hops, an an IPA level, with some sweet and dark malts. Flavor: about equal mix of dark and very dark roasted grains and earthy/herbal hops. Medium bitterness. Both hops anddark roast linger on and on in the aftertaste. O: fairly easy drinking and tame black IPA, yet flavorful, as the malts and hops partly neutralize each other.

Tastes more like a pumpkin spice cake than a beer. That being said it tastes like a good pumpkin spice cake haha. A bit of yeasty breafiness but not Mich else besides the pumpkin. Succeed s at least in that regard

Draft: This is good, but nothing spectacular... lots spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, very pumpkin pie-like. Body is lacking a bit, it’s a bit thin.

It has a pale straw yellow color with good clarity and visible carbonation. The head is thin, bright white and foamy. It quickly fades leaving little to no lace behind. The aroma is mild and has hints of light malty grains and husky notes. The flavor is simple crisp and clean. Light malty grains give it a slightly sweet character with a touch of citrus and leafy/herbal hops. Its light body, fairly thin texture and crisp finish make it easy to drink

[on tap in CLT airport] Sweet base malt and hay aroma with some faint lagery sulfur and young popcorn notes. Crystal clear straw under a short-lived white cover that clings to the glass. Weak flavour of hay and sweet pilsner-style malt that lets through some ethanol tang. Noble hops presence in the background. Light body and watery, with medium carbonation, and a faintly tart finish.

Presented as a winter seasonal beer, this beer may serve that purpose well, but would seem to be unpleasant under other circumstances. Appearance was an appetizing dark amber, aroma was lighter with some roastiness and sweetness. My experience of the taste was not very enjoyable: alcohol content was not masked well, sweetness struck me as sticky and syrupy, hoppiness was present but indistinctive. Indistinctive in that their was a variety of competing flavors. Medium-bodied. I will say this was a complex and flavorful brew, although I personally did not care for it.

Carolina Beer Co. Limerick Irish Red
On tap at Carolina Ale House. A run of the mill red ale that pairs well with pub grub. Easy drinking and balanced, but nothing stands out. Brewed for the masses, beer knurds should look elsewhere for flavor. Might be a good gateway beer. All that said, it is brewed skillfully and without flaws, and is a pretty reddish brown in the pint glass.

From 12oz bottle. Pours a dark amber with little head. Cinnamon and slight nutmeg aroma. Touch-o-hops basically waters down the spiciness of the beer. Kinda weak. Dogfish Head Punkin Ale is a much better example of a spiced pumpkin ale.

Poured from the bottle. Aroma is full of nutmeg, with some hints of clove. No real sweetness or hop presence to speak of. Color is a nice orange-amber hue, with small white head. Flavor is strong clove, with just enough malt sweetness to balance the spices. Again, not much from the hops. Overall, this is not my favorite style, but this is a nice pumpkin beer.

I remember this one, and I remember its many iterations, including the plastic 16oz bottle. Before many good beers came to NC, I bought this at the beach on occasion. Better than shitty macro, but still a bit sweet and corny. Slightly metallic.

Nice balance. Good malty flavor for a black IPA. Hops are not overpowering, but are also not that interesting. Now marketed under the Foothills name. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Carolina Beer Co. Cottonwood Pumpkin Spiced Ale
Usually the one I reach for at a party, when it’s down to this or non-local pumpkins. Like most, this one’s basically a perfunctory amber ale with just enough hop bite in there to provide some relief from the overwhelmingly sweet additions. Just never a style I’ve warmed to, but this one’s better than some.

Bottle. Pours an amber color with almost no head. A fair amount of clove smell to this. Not as heavy on the spices as many other pumpkin beers, but still not great.
