BlueTarp Brewing Company Reviews

BlueTarp Last Place Stout 3.8
Can. Listed as 12.5%. Black pour with a thin dark brown head. Aroma was charred malt, burnt marshmallow, dark cocoa, touch of coffee and smoke. Flavors were slightly astringent, bits of dark cocoa, licorice, roasty malt, lingering, slightly bitter smoky finish. Mouthfeel was surprisingly on the medium side given the ABV. It’s certainly more dry than I was suspecting. Overall a nicely attenuated, big, roasty stout.

12 ounce can. Amber red in color. Lots of caramel notes. Ok overall, but nothing too amazing.

BlueTarp Cascade Killa 3.3
Can. Pours dark copper with a thick and foamy buff head that pillows. Aroma presents woody hops and some hay, not much else. Flavor, fortunately, surpasses the aroma - hoppy, resiny, hay, malty and subtle fruity notes all add to the taste chord. Mouthfeel features decent body and fizz, while finish has hoppy and hay tones. Kill this cascade.

BlueTarp Cascade Killa 1.5
Overly cloying and sweet - I am an IPA/Double lover but this one is a fail; drank the first can of a sixer and had to go to my beer fridge for a Sweetwater IPA to cleanse my palate.

BlueTarp Fünk Weisse 3.6
Can. Pours a pale yellow, mild haze, soapy white head. Aroma of wheat, straw, and tart. Flavor follows the nose with hints of salt and is a pretty standard Berliner Weisse. Super light and thin body and texture, fizzy carbonation, and a dry crisp finish.

BlueTarp Mother Hoppin’ Double IPA 3.5
Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a yellowish head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of hops, malt, and alcohol, leading to a bitter finish.

BlueTarp Cascade Killa 3.3
Atlanta, Ga - Taco Mac - Virginia Highlands - 12 oz can. Dark copper pour, bone colored head with a nice web of lacing. Aroma of ripening apricots, some maple syrup sweetness. Lots of bad homebrew-like crystal malt over-wroughtness, light citrus bitterness, some apricot fruitness. Thick enough mouthfeel. Not writing home about this one.

BlueTarp Fünk Weisse 3.8
12 oz can. Nicely tart and refreshing. Now go put a bunch of different fruit in it and make them limited And we’ll have a super star here.

BlueTarp Dark Matter 3.6
Pours a jet black from the crowler with minimal ring of bubbly tan head that doesn’t really leave lace. Aroma of tart dark fruit wotth lactic acidity overpowering the chocolate and dark roast underneath. Taste follows, booze is hidden, but only because the sourness is so intense. Assertive, but not too much, big but still feels kind of thin. Don’t get the wood, hardly any stout, but not bad.

BlueTarp Cascade Killa 3.2
Backlog entered due to labor day off. Cask sampled at Classic City Brew Fest 2015! Malt forward but nice piney back notes from the hops. Nothing great, but not bad.

BlueTarp Dark Matter 3.5
Good beer courtesy my Secret Santa. Thanks man. If I had tried this blind I would’ve rated this as a sour ale. No imperial stout characteristics. Aroma was sour cherries and vinegar.. Pour was a deep dark brown/near black with a thin tan ring for a head. Taste was deliciously sour. Strong vinegar and sour cherry were in your face and close to mouth puckering. Alcohol hidden perfectly. Nice carbonation. As it warmed, more tartness came out.

BlueTarp BantamWeight Ale 3.5
Sample at the brewery. Nice, cloudy ruby-brown color, with crap-tons of foam (but that was probably the idle tap line, not the beer). The nose is bready malts, black tea, and caramel. The flavor is malty, but relatively dry, with not much hop bitterness, and a touch of roastiness. Medium body, grainy, and thick. This is a nice, easy Irish ale. Great malt character, and a unique flavor.

BlueTarp Armeniaca 4.2
Sample at the brewery. Pale yellow color, with a big, frothy, off-white head. The nose is sharp mandarin oranges, apricots, butterscotch, and lemon zest. the flavor is sweet and citrusy, with an aggressive sourness. Medium body, very acidic, crisp, and surprisingly smooth. This is a wonderfully tasty, fruity, and tart beer. The apricots give this a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, and the souring is perfect for the base beer. I’d highly recommend this.

BlueTarp Dark Matter 3.3
Crowler from the brewery. Pours black, with a big, rocky, tan head. The nose is tart black cherries, dark chocolate, cinnamon, molasses, and lemons. Flavor is sweet and a little bitter, with a fairly significant sourness that is a little unpleasant. Pretty boozy, and warming in the finish. Medium to heavy body, oily, and sticky. This is a very interesting and fun beer, but a little confused and unfocused.

BlueTarp Cherries Jubilee 3
Crowler shared with jrob21. The aroma was offputting, like nail polish or turpentine. Just off. The taste thankfully did not show these characteristics that much. Very tart cherries, big malty body, lots and lots of cherries. Rather one dimensional, but a certain step up from the aroma.

BlueTarp Armeniaca 4
Crowler from the brewery on the first day you could do that. It’s a grand time in Georgia finally. Really nice fruity sour beer. Lightly tart and light body. Nice apricot fruit working in the flavor. Pungent fruity nose and pretty entertaining. Lacking some of the complexity of the bigger boy fruited sours but a really nice drink. Missing the turpentine aromas of the cherry so it seems like that was a one time thing.

BlueTarp Fünk Weisse 3.7
From a big can. Thanks Joe! Pours opaque yellow gold with almost no head. Tastes like nicely light and tart grapefruit, some passion fruit, biscuit malt, and light wheat. Light body and medium carbonation. Smells like wheat, doughy and biscuit malt, and light grapefruit.

BlueTarp Cherries Jubilee 3.4
Crolwer from the brewery and shared at westmeisters. Aroma is a little off and too reminiscient of paint thinner. The flavor is really nice though. Lots of fruit with a decent bit of tartness. Good brown sour malt body going on. Some sweetness and a finish that has a lot of cherry fruit again. After the aroma this is pretty nice.

BlueTarp Tropic Thunder 3.5
Giant can from the brewery. Thanks Joe! Pours clear copper with a fizzy bubbly beige head and lots of lacing. Tastes like nutty citrus hops, dry toasted malt, and strong grapefruit. Medium body and low carbonation. Smells like nutty hops, grapefruit, and toasted malt.

BlueTarp Cherries Jubilee 3
Bluetarp Cherries Jubilee from a shared 32 oz can. Very tart, strong flavored beer. Mildly funky. Sour cherries with hints of other ripe fruits.

BlueTarp Cascade Killa 3.5
Growler from taps. Chewy caramel malt. Pours a light brown color, pretty unique for an IPA. Tells you you are going to get more malt here than hops. Pine and resin towards the finish. Would love a little more fruit and bitterness but this is still a well made drink. Bordering on double IPA.

BlueTarp Mother Hoppin’ Double IPA 3.6

BlueTarp Hopster the Grouch 3
Sample at first sunday. Maybe I need to give this another shot. There was so much going on here that I would need to spend a little more time with it. My first impression though is not good. Trying to be too many things makes this a bit of a mess when it all comes together. Too many strong flavors competing, brett, double IPA, sweet, oak. A lot. Funky cheese aroma. Flavor is a little tart but gets overpowered by tropical fruity hops. Finish is a little sour and a little oak and a little muddled. Left with an earthy oaky kind of dirty lasting mouth feel.

BlueTarp Hopster the Grouch 4.8
Thick white head that fades awat quickly to a stubborn lace. Deep red orange color. Funky nose and a ton of fruit as well. A Barnyard bomb covered in pineapple and mango. The flavor is quite tart at first that subsides as you get used to it. Powerful funky notes and hop bitterness in the flavor with a big malty backbone. Almost overwhelming, but in the best way possible. The aftertaste takes a while to subside again a great thing - I could sip this for hours. Bottle 121 of 123 - Batch #1

BlueTarp Hopsided IPA 3.4
Drinks like an English style pale. Pretty easy drinking. It’s different. Not bad. Not great.

BlueTarp Hopster the Grouch 4.9
Copper color. Aroma of pure brett, hops, and lacto. 11.6% alcohol but balanced out by the extreme sour and oak / fruit / dry hopping. If you like sour hopped beers, Hopster takes it to extremes! Everything was boldly pronounced yet still identifiable and extremely drinkable. Certainly a sour double IPA, but completely different in flavor from La Terrior. Sort of similar to Trinity Super Juice Soultion in flavor but far bigger and more bold, and a more tart version. The label on the bottle is very nice - it is *actual* wood veneer and you could see the knots of wood - every label was slightly different, the bottle was dipped in green wax and hand numbered. I had bottle #116 out of #123. I want more!!

BlueTarp Tropic Thunder 3
Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow on tap with fluffy white head that leaves light lace. Aroma and taste are biscuit and pale malt with faint citrus hop character. Easy to drink, but nothing exciting.
Monday, April 13, 2015

BlueTarp Hopsided IPA 3.2
Pours a slightly hazy golden brown on tap with fluffy off-white head that dissipates. Aroma and taste are mostly malt to me, bread and caramel, barely there hints of earthy pine hops. Not bad, but lacking a punch.
Monday, April 13, 2015

BlueTarp Last Place Stout 3.7
Pours a deep black on tap with thin ring of tan head. Aroma of big roast, tobacco, earth, taste follows with an assertive bitterness. Booze isn’t too bad, black malt a touch over done, but not bad.
Monday, April 13, 2015

BlueTarp Fünk Weisse 3.7
Pours a surprisingly clear gold with nice ring of bubbly white head. Aroma of lacto funk, slight acidity over nice doughy wheat. Taste follows, mild funk, lemon fruitiness. Good carbonation, solid for what it is.

BlueTarp BantamWeight Ale 3.1
On tap. Hoppy for style, like a red APA. Nearly as hoppy and bitter as an IPA. O too bitter for style, especially in the aftertaste.

BlueTarp Tropic Thunder 3.4
Sample at Ale Yeah Decatur. Light, clear yellow, with a small, off-white, bubbly head. The aroma is tangerines, mango, light yogurt and hard cheese, and white bread. Sweet and citrusy, with a mild bitterness. Light body, a little astringent, and crisp. Overall, this is a light and sessionable IPA.

BlueTarp Last Place Stout 3.7
Atlanta, Ga. - Taco Mac - Sandy Springs - on tap. Dark as night black pour, sticky khaki head that leaves behind a nice film of lacing. Aroma has some licorice accents, a touch of dark unsweetened chocolate. Flavor is bold with some creosote notes, a bit of espresso, some licorice to top it off. Mouthfeel is clean and slick. Impressed

BlueTarp Hopsided IPA 3.5
On tap at Taco Mac. Amber with offwhite head. Nice hops aroma - citrus and pine. Taste is mostly bitter, but some bready malt in the background. Good body and drinkability. Overall, a good ipa.

BlueTarp Tropic Thunder 3.1
On tap in Atlanta. Clear orange-amber is unusual but attractive. Decent head. Rather mild aroma but the flavor packs a lot of hops for a session beer. Unfortunately, IMO, this is mainly herbal and grassy with little fruitiness even though it is there in the aroma. Light-medium body with near medium carbonation.

BlueTarp Tropic Thunder 3.9
Growler from The Beer Grolwer Avondale. Very nice hop profile with lots of tropical notes, aromas, and flavors. Nice presence and incredible flavor for a beer that might as well be considered non-alcoholic.
