Walkerville Classic Amber Lager

I did not like this beer at all. A very pale orangy-gold colour with very little head. The aroma is slightly skunky with a lot of off notes. The flavour was a mish-mash of malt, hop, and sour vegetables. A pretty poor effort for a light beer.

This is far and away the best of the Walkerville beer line. A nice clear golden ale with a short-lived white head. The aroma was grainy malt with a nice splash of hops on the nose. The flavour was refreshing with a nice malt bite followed by a bitter finish.

I wasn’t expecting much from this Amber Lager, a style that can be hit and miss and in Canada, can generally be all over the map. This one pours a clear amber with little head. The aroma is caramel malt with some hops in the air. The flavour is malty with a hint of hops and plums. Unlike some other Amber lagers, this one doesn’t fill you up (ala Alexander Keith’s Red Amber Ale)

341ml bottle pours amber in color with a finger of creamy white head that leaves some thin lacing on the glass. Aroma is light caramel and hops. Taste is caramel matly sweetness with a pleasing hop bitterness in the finish. Light to medium body and ample carbonation. This amber lager was definitely a pleasant surprise.

341 ml bottle (from dusty 6 pack at Crossroads LCBO... wonder how long this one has been sitting around). Pours a very lightly cloudy yellowish golden colour with thin white head. Aroma has lots of caramel malt, grains and a bit of sourness. Flavour has identical profile. Body is lightish but not too bad for 3.9%. So so but better than I’d anticipated.

Holey crap! This is one awsome brew! Poured a nice thick, solid white head similar to a Caffreys or Kilkenny on tap, nice light amber/orange colour, decent tiny bubble carbonation, floaties that never settle and a decent ammount of brown sediment blobs. Seeing that sediment dump into the glass came as quite the suprise. Produced a consistant solid ring of lacing thoughout the tasting. Aroma is sweet and malty. Something seems odd about the breadiness, so I read the other reviews and I gotta agree with Pootz that its "musty earthy bread dough". Nice hops as well. Taste is similar to the smell but is lighter on the breads and comes with a perfectly balanced bitterness. Flavours do not overcome the other qualities of the beer. Mouthfeel is almost medium bodied, extremely smooth with a better delivery than most beers and has a nice creamy soft light bitter finish. I need more of this. I got to say that I had my doubts about this beer, considering that I bought in Dauphin, Manitoba and it was a single (the only one in the store).Excellent beer.

Bottle courtesy of GregClow. Pours a clear bubbly pale gold with an average size frothy white head. Mild aroma of grain, very light hops and some vegetal notes. Watery flavour is lightly vegetal with some mild grassy hops, bready malt and a quick light bitter finish. Average bodied. A little too carbonated for my liking. Meh, it’s not bad but it’s only average at best.

I was born drinking walkerville.. It’s a local beer where I live, so it’s fairly easy to come by at events. I had it on saturday at the Greek fest from a keg trailer. it came out a dark orange, with a medium tannish head. The aroma isn’t very strong, but there is a light smell of hops and malt. The taste is where it’s at, strong hops and a nice sweetness. I’ll buy it from now on, but it’s difficult to come by.

Pours an orangey amber with no head. Aroma is almost non existant, mostly just malty sweetness. Flavour is not bad, some graniness, malts, a tidbit of hops. It’s an OK beer, if nothing else, its atleast refreshing.

I tried this beer on May 2, 2008 after purchasing a variety 6-pack of Ontario Craft Beer from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a translucent red-tinged golden colour with a generous white head that quickly dissipated. The aroma was slightly malty, a little tinge of hops, and a lot of mustiness as stated previously. The beer is thin to medium bodied with ample carbonation. The flavour has a slight sweetness to it, a little bit of caramel malt, and a little hoppish character in the end.

Pours copperish, medium head. Aroma is a little citrusy, a little sweet with some graininess. Taste is okay; smooth and clean with a bit of a citrusy bitter finish. Beats a macro by a mile, a pretty good Ontario craft brew.

Bottle. It’s never an exciting time when rating yet another Ontario Lager but here goes anyway: Pours a clear orange with a small diminishing white head. Mild but inoffensive aroma has some hints of honey and fruit along with the requisite grain and very light hops. Flavour’s light and watery but not too bad: Caramel malt, a bit of fruit, grain, light hops and a mild bitter finish -- nothing bad here but could use more flavour. Light to average bodied. I’m relieved that there’s nothing bad about this beer (no skunk, no "fakeness", no overabundance of rice etc.), it’s just a clean, relatively well done -- but dull -- Lager.

341 mL bottle. Part of my Ontario discovery pack. Nothing of particular note regarding the aroma, fairly straight forward hops with some malt. Malts seemed to dominate the flavour to me, almost tasted like a dark lager to me. Not well balanced... The finish is fairly smooth. I might need to give this a re-rate at some point, I don’t trust how much malt I tasted...

341ml bottle, 5% a/v From the Ontario Craft Brewers 6 pack Pours a gold honey colour with a lovely tan head. Aromas of nice roasted malt with some hoppy bitterness. The taste is smooth and sweet with some bitter hops and almost a sweet corn flavour. Odd bit of taste but a sweet honey finish and a decent mouthfeel help redeem this brew.

Walkerville Classic Amber Lager
341ml bottle from my Ontario Craft Brewers mix pack. Pours a nice amber-gold colour, with a small surface film of a head. The aroma is sweet, caramel like, with some hops thrown in. The taste is the same, but with some grass, and something weird in the finish that brings back terrible memories of Taps Premium Lager. The aftertaste is decent with some sweet caramalts, but I can’t quite get over the strange unpleasantness that reminds me of horrible beer experiences in the past. It’s that weird plastic-like taste that comes through half way and into the finish. It has a negative effect on the mouth-feell as well. How does that happen? Odd. Maybe the quality of this beer varies from bottle to bottle. Whatever the case I’m not all that impressed, and I consider myself a lager-lover. Kind of a shame.

341 ml bottle in the “Ont. Craftbrewers 6-pack” from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass. NO23/07

App.: Clear deep golden, moderate white head. Aroma: Light bread and biscuit, more cereal and grain, a touch of funk; boring. Palate: Macro medium body and carbonation. Flav.: Biscuit and bread, light funky hops.

The bottle indicates that this is a winner. It didn’t win me over.

341 ml bottle from the Ontario Craft Brewers Discovery Pack - pours a clear light amber with a bountiful off-white head. Really nice grassy noble hop aroma and some sweet malt to balance. Clean and fresh in the mouth, with some light graininess adding to the hop profile. Nicely carbonated. Simple, well-crafted lager tat would be a treat in the summertime.

Pours orange with a thin head. Aroma of corn, peachy malt and inklings of hops. A sweet, fruity - nay, peach taste reaps its surprised welcome. This is actually quite nice. Somewhat light bodied -- probably medium for a lager. A slightly tart and quite lager finish rounds off the beer.

draft at Windsor casino under the name Legends Lager (confirmed that it’s the same stuff and is commonly known as Walkerville Lager) - Pours gold with a white, one finger head. The light aroma is mainly grainy malt. The flavor light malts and a little mild hops that provides adequate balance. It’s on the thin side and while it’s an ok, easy to drink beer, it didn’t impress me.

Bottle - 341ml. Boring golden body with good carbonation and a thin white frothy head. Fair malty aroma with bready and herbal notes. Its malty/hoppy taste is rather thin and lacks complexity. Finish is almost non-existent. Far from my idea of a good Pilsner.

341 mL bottle. Slightly translucent and pale gold with minimal head. Mild aroma; sweet malt, maybe a little grainy. Very smooth, nicely carbonated. Not a lot to it, in terms of taste; malt, just a little hop flavour near the end. A little sweet. Not much finish. Not bad, for an Ontario pilsener. Great summer beer.

bottle: Thanks to Lord Beamish for this from his pilgrimage to Walkerville Brewery. Again, he hits the nail on the head: for a LIGHT beer, this is superior (as the label boldly declaires). Are all the reviewers here mad? It is a light beer, of course it will lack some flavour, but it has way more flavour than any light beer I’ve ever had! Just enough hops bite and some famous Walkerville sweet malts to really round out the flavour. Thiis is the best light beer I’ve ever had & isn’t that bad compared to normal beers. Comparing this to a full bodied ale or bitter is just missing the whole point.

bottle: I picked one of these up direct from the factory in Windsor, Ontario. It’s a bold move to call your beer ’superior’ but when you produce award winning beers like Walkerville, you can justify the name choice. This is clearly superior to any light beer on the market. Having said that.....it’s still a light beer. Pours a beautiful deep golden colour with a thin white head. Some lacing is evident. It looks delicious. A sweet hops aroma leads to a pleasant mouth feel. Tastes somewhat sweet and finishes silky smooth. Surprising body for a light beer. This tastes very similar to its big brother beer, Walkerville Premium Blonde. Why everyone is roasting it remains a mystery to me. Maybe Walkerville doesn’t run enough commercials of scantily clad women or run a Maxim Golf Tournament like another light brand I know. Bizzare.

Apparently, Walkerville was known for its beer quality around the turn of the century. Okay... They claim no adjuncts as well, but I detect distinct corny notes. A bit of grass and much malt for a lite beer in the nose; flavour-wise the sweetness is very apparent right off the bat, weak body and some astringency in the finish. Gets points for appearance: golden yellow with decent head and even a touch of lacing. But the imbalance and thinness make it an unpleasant drink overall.

Extremely light in colour and body. Not much to it in terms of variety of taste. Very distinct smell, hops, grassy undertones and malt. It claims to have yeast as well, but it’s not very prevalent.
