Frog Island Belgian Saison
Bottle to tulip, the appearance was a semi-hazy golden/bronze color with a little white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Some stringy lace. The aroma had some Belgian spice, clove or coriander (might have been both), herbal, and orange pulp. The flavor was moderately spicy with some sweet herbal to orange pulp trying to balance. Light aftertaste of the same with the same sort of finish. The feel was between light and medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, nothing special to me, but slightly do-able in a crunch.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a fairly dark amber color with a thin white foamy head that fell off at a decent pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some super sweet grapefruit tones, sugarcane, cereal/grainy sweetness, dried grassy tones and a sturdy malt base. The flavor was sweet all of the way through with some butterscotch coming out fairly strong. Big malty aftertaste and finish. The feel was medium bodied with more of a sipping sort of quality about it. Carbonation felt fine and the ABV felt fine. Overall, well, not sure how old the bottle was when I had it, but maybe some sort of odd "old school DIPA." Not sure what else to say.

Frog Island Amber Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-dark orange close to amber color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a moderate pace. Slight lace. The aroma had some caramel/toffee malt flowing over some citrusy to floral hoppy portions. The flavor blended fairly nice between the hops and the malts, pretty nice. Consistent blend in the aftertaste and finish. The feel was about medium bodied, maybe just a tad underneath. Decent session about it. Carbonation seemed fine and so was the ABV. Overall, pretty good amber ale worthy of having again, perhaps.

Brown-black pour with a medium thin tan head that diminishes quickly to a wispy film. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of oak, malt and chocolate. Medium body with flavors of oaky vanilla, charred malt and chocolate. The finish is a little thin and roasty with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sadly not a good saison. No Belgian yeast flavor. No carbonation -- indeed heavy for the ABV. And why is it sweet?!? Weird.

Frog Island Porter
Rated on 02-05-2012 (Bottle) The appearance is a fizzy light brown head that quickly dissipates, opaque body, no carbonation observed, and no lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and nutty. The flavor is lightly coffee bitter, roasted malt, chocolate, and finishes semi-dry. The mouthfeel is somewhat flat and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is easy to drink for the style, but needs a lot more flavor.

bottle thanks to fletchwadd Light amber color, small off white head that lasted for a decent time then faded to a small lace.Malty semi-sweet aroma with a hint of caramel and maybe some fruit. The hops seem nicely done.Pretty good flavor of mild malt then a nice amount of hop flavor, sort of bitter-sweet and mildly fruity.Nice and smooth for the most part and fairly drinkable.Well worth trying if you can get it.

Murky amber color with a foamy beige head. Thick earthy, sweet nose with lots of hop resin. Thick mouthfeel with lots of hop juice, candied grapefruit rind, and some earthy notes. It tastes like an old bottle with lots of patina on the hops.

Frog Island Chocolate Strawberry Porter
Backlogged rating: Tap, Deep brown with a creamy tan head. The aroma is unexpected with a wild yeast and lacto character along with raspberry, bittersweet chocolate, vanilla bean and walnuts. The taste continues the surprises as it very twangy and lightly soured with some light chocolate and caramel malt notes, quite yeasty and earthy as well. The mouth feel is very smooth and refreshing. I am sure this is a mistake beer or one gone bad but the sourness works very well against the base brew. I shockingly like this.

Frog Island Porter
Blurs the line between a porter and a stout, and I would argue it's more the latter than the former. Slightly sweet but very smooth fresh coffee notes -- the fruit you taste in good coffee is present here. Some underlying roastness as well. Overall, I really like it -- slightly unusual but put together nicely. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Frog Island Cousins Cream Ale
Pour from a 22oz bottle. Slightly cloudy yellow brew with white head. Aroma of sweeter malts, some grass, some floral hops. Taste is sweet malts at the start, some mild grassy hops in mid swallow and slight resurgence of sweetness late in the swallow. Active carbonation adds a sense of creaminess to the palate. Very mellow, easy drinking, and tasty. I’ve always been partial to cream ales as they originated in North America and are something of a hybrid capturing the historical transition from ales to lagers. And when done right they are damn tasty.

Frog Island Amber Ale
This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a typically carbonated transparent weak amber colored body. The mild aroma was dirty. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The mild flavor contained notes of brown malt and hops. A decent one but not one that I would consider drinking again.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a extremely large sized head of finely sized light tan colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated transparent light orange colored body. The mild aroma was malty and musty. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a mellow hoppy aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of orange peel hops and malt. An OK brew just nothing special.

Good effort for a first try, but leaves something to be desired. The aroma brings sweet bourbon barrel notes. Pours dark coffee, unclear with a big creamy dark cocoa head. The flavor brings sweet bourbon notes, but lacks the roasted malts flavors you want.

Bottle:   Black, deep cola hues, large fizzy beige head, dies quickly, spotty lacing.   Soft buttery roasted malt nose, slight vinegar, touch of barrel and bourbon.   Thinking this is either spoiling, or an aged bottle.   Reviews vary on this one, from gusher to normal.   Not a gusher in this case.   A bit more oakish on the tongue, definitely woody, roasty, a bit of burnt marshmallow with a slight acrid background.   Not a smooth example, a little rough, and certainly not overdone.   Almost seems like a really aged example that is about to go over the hill, but I dont think its that old.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes roasty, stale, a bit musty, with an airy acridness, subtle notes of woodiness and bourbon.   Perhaps better really fresh, but in the bottle it seems to maybe not do so well.   Thanks for the bottle Kevin!

I don’t know if something was wrong with my single bottle or if this beer is just a fail. Beer exploded from 22oz bottle upon opening (no, I didn’t shake it). Bottle kept spewing even after pouring out half of it into a glass. This tasted nothing like any imperial stout I have had. . . it was not good. Thin, watery on palate. Burnt, chocolate and vanilla ash taste.

Black in color with an enormous head that nearly fills the glass. The nose is just awful. Highly metallic and acidic with the only stout characteristic being the roasted malt. The flavor is similarly bad. Very acrid and harsh, super metallic and acidic as well. Somewhat roasty with maybe a touch of oak flavor. No way I’d care to have this ever again.

Courtesy of dcschiller. Pours really dark like with mocha looking head. The aroma offers up some candy like bourbon rolling into some slight oak notes, chocolate brownie, dark roasted malts, burnt malts and then ending with a near peaty rubbery smokiness. The taste has solid richness from such things as dark roasted malts and chocolate brownie and then quickly picking up smooth sweet bourbon, a burnt malt or two and a touch of peaty like smokiness into the finish. Very nice.

Frog Island Amber Ale
Rated 3-16-2012. Bottle purchased in December, 2011 at Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI. Poured a medium sized very fizzy ivory head that mostly diminished, spotty amounts of lacing, slightly hazy body, fizzy, fast-rising carbonation, and an orange to golden hue. The aroma is malty, floral hops, sweet, and a hint of caramel. The flavor is semi-sweet, malty, floral hops, and has a short dry finish. The mouthfeel is tingly and this is a light-medium bodied Amber Ale. Overall, it is easy to drink and could be a session beer even at 6%ABV as the ABV is well hidden.

Frog Island Cousins Cream Ale
Rated 3-15-2012. Bottle purchased at Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI. Label shows an ABV of 6.0%. This beer poured a medium sized white head that was very, very fizzy and fully diminished. There was no lacing, transparent body, very fizzy and fast-rising carbonation, and a gold hue. The aroma was some malt, sweet, hint of fruitiness, and earthy. The flavor was sweet, lightly malty, earthy and a semi-dry finish. The mouthfeel was tingly, watery and thin. This is a light bodied Cream Ale beer. The ABV was well hidden, but the beer lacks character in so many ways. The flavor is bland tasting and I am wondering if this particular bottle is past its prime.

Bottle… Clear, deep, dark, dirty-orange ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose presents an interesting marriage of toffee, cotton candy malts and floral, herbal hops. Full-bodied and oily with zippy carbonation. Nice caramel and other malty, toasted flavors are a bit tainted by odd, herbal hops or phenols. Finishes crisp, mildly sweet, herbal and minerally. Gorgeous dark pour, a finger of tan head. Aroma and Taste virtually the same - Bourbon and more more bourbon, with some slight butteryness. There’s potential here but the bourbon is overpowering in this one. Fairly good mouthfeel. If they tweak the recipe a bit I’llrevisit.

Frog Island Bengal IPA
Pour from a 22 oz bottle, purchased at Salute! Slightly hazy orange / amber brew with 3 thringers of light and persistent head. Very active carbonation. Aroma - dominated by pine, citrus, a little caramel and spice. Tste is light malts, caramel, a moderate floral hops finish and nice bitter end, but with a little caramel sweet eeking though as the final after taste. Palate manages to be both thin and sticky. A serviceable IPA but does not stand out and is also not all that tasty. ..
