This beer was nothing special. Thought I was getting a German beer on the cheap before I got home. Never have had such a problem with overflowing bottles on opening. Didn’t get better even after 3 of these. I would have rather had a VB.

Looks a bit like beer, smells a bit like beer, is even packaged like beer, is it beer? I’m not sure.

I was in Purvis cellars ogling all the beers I was yet to try. This place is seriously good. The amiable chap pointed me in the direction of this and given the price I thought I would give it a go. It looks and smells like a lager, little hop presence but a reasonable biscuity nose with overtones of orange. This citrus note comes across in the taste with a hint of dried fruit. Is this brewed correctly or are these esters that shouldn’t be here? Anyway, another rate and a reasonable beer but not memorable by any stretch of the imagination.

I believe this beer is also sold under the name of Mercat draught at the mercat hotel near the Victoria markets. It’s not terrible on tap, sweet and predictable, not dissimilar to Carlton Draught. Probably made with a lot of sugar. Devoid of any defining character.

Pours a clear golden colour, small dissipating head. Aroma is yeasty and fruity. Tastes quite a lot like coopers sparkling, perhaps a little sweeter and skunkier. It’s also got a fairly thin mouthful for a beer of decent abv, not very bitter either. Finish is clean and crisp(ish). Not too bad.

Bottled. Hazy golden. Fruity with restrained sweetness. Bready and freshly malty with a nice combination of soft buttery malt and come aromatic crystal malt. Fairly low bitterness. Fairly similar in malt character to Coopers. An unassuming, yet interesting and unusual beer. I like it!

A true bargain beer. A smooth, well rounded, easy drinking flavour, with a hint of honey and frtuityness to add interest. You wont be fooled into thinking it’s a true German beer, but it has enough of that essence to make its consumption a pleasure. I’m not aware of a better "drinking" beer for the price.

Looks OK - has some head retention. Big acetaldehyde aroma with diacetyl and toffee behind it. Tastes watery but if anything it’s like sparkling apple juice with some toffee and rusty bitterness. Boring. Never seen it in a can as in the photo here either.

Geelong Our Original Pale Ale
Whilst working in Adelaide, myself and workmates ventured for a Friday bevvie and ordered a Pale. Grudges all round, we complained that the taps were infected as it was initially clear "this isn’t Cooper’s". Wasn’t that bad though! Poured a slightly hazy pale straw with a thin soapy white head. Little aroma. Mouth feel was decent with low carbonation and good body. Sweet castor sugar and bready yeast, quite gluggy and arguably lacking in definition with only a light hint of sour leafy hops. Finish is a little short and forgettable. Know nothing of the brewery and haven’t seen this beer advertised anywhere else in Adelaide. Still, it actually wasn’t that disagreeable a drop.

Very clear tan - looks good. Lots of lifted stewed fruits on the nose, kinda skunky, NQR. Feels ok in the mouth but more skunky notes pop up. I hope this was a bad bottle.

Crystal clear classic larger look - reminds me of a Crownie. Sweet nose, a little malt. Nothing much happening in the mouth, more sweetness but I’m not sure what it is. A little soapy. Not bitterness. Not a great beer.

Actually I didn’t think this was was too bad. Looks the goods with pale yellow gold colour, slightly cloudy. Sweetish nose with a waft of malt. Thick palate, again driven by sweetness although not necessarily malty. Tails a little at the finish and doesn’t really offer any hoppiness. Probably not for the purists but I can see some ’crowd pleaser’ appeal.

Ugh. All this brewery’s beers taste the same. They’re really quite bad but not offensive enough to rate really poorly in my book. This one has rust and bananas and not much else - OK maybe lemon detergent. Good head retention. Crap beer.

I really don’t know what to make of this. I’m actually getting some enjoyment from this beer but I can’t believe it’s in the manner that the brewery intended it. Aroma is nuts, cider and metal, as with most of this brewery’s beers but perhaps less objectionable with the cideriness quite appley (Granny Smith). The beer tastes thin, sour, very appley and astringent. It really in no way resembles a good pale lager. I’d kind of describe it as cross between my insipid (but OK) home-brewed cider and a wussy lambic (maybe Belle-Vue Gueuze). Looks pretty good. High carb. Tastes like granny smiths.

Well... yeah it actually had pretty decent head retention and most of the objectionable aromas went away pretty quickly. Other than that it’s thin, metallic, astringent and kind of headache-inducing. And farmboy I can go you one better - I’m from Geelong :)

Initially smells like Ovaltine, then heaps like pears but both of these dissipate and it smells really malty - honey, bread, golden syrup, diacetyl - so much so that it seems like some kind of artificial "German malt" aroma. Really interesting aroma but I’m not entirely sure about it. Flavour is pretty toffee-malty with no real bitterness but it’s not oversweet. Malt is kind of cardboardy. Really interesting stuff but a bit all over the shop, frankly.

Hints of fruity maybe even apple and honey notes in the aroma with some almost Old Speckled Hen volatiles. Smallish head that held and a bright copper gold colouring, pasturised clear. Sweet malty almost apple flavours. Weird that this is a Pilsener but even if others didn’t enjoy this I liked it.

Ewww.... I had this once before and thought it was pretty decent (and a dead ringer for Coopers Pale) but this time it was terrible. Really, REALLY yeasty aroma with some metallic notes. Tastes sweet and fruity like fruit cup cordial (or Fruity Lexia cask wine). To be avoided.

Nice gold colour, very clear with a small but tight head. Aroma of caramel malt, over-ripe fruit, alcohol/nail polish and rust. Flavour is quite clean, slightly fruity with quite a good balance between light malt and light bitterness. Not as highly carbonated as expected which was a bonus. Easily one of this brewery's better beers, and great considering the price, but still pretty average.

Golden bronze colour slightly hoppy aroma. Sweetish start to the flavour with maybe a bit of fruitiness. Slightly bready at the finish which does not have much bitterness. More like an amped up lager and lacks real quality. Interestingly, this has the same abv as Coopers Sparkling Ale.

Gets marks for being better than the Bitter and the Draught and gets another mark for being better than Geelong Premium. Otherwise it's not that special. If I'm driving or taking it easy I'd have a Boags Premium Light anyday.

Decidedly un-Bavarian. Very crappy Aussie stuff, and even though its in accordance with Reihensgebot, its still manages to taste like they threw a crapload of chemicals and additives into it. Dirty water-esque.

Pretty screwed up. Better than the pale ale, i tasted more hop in this (but it ain't any where close to being hoppy). Classic Aussie chemical finish, (although, it does say that theres no preservatives). Pretty shite. Premium my butt!!!

Dim, pale peachy browm colour. The aroma is like sweet cordial, really short industrial finish. Traditional crap Aussie chemical additive finish, really bad, and unbelievably thin. Hard to believe its an ale.

Too pale & watery with a non-existant head. The flavour is flat and lifeless with an unpleasant cloying quality. The patronising label note gives an indication that this brewer is not to be taken seriously, and this over-aspiring beer is just another awful strike for Geelong Brewery.

Well, this supposed ’premium’ stuff is slightly less bad than the confusingly named "Geelong Premium Lager", but that’s not saying much. This seems to have aspirations toward being like CUB’s Crown Lager, with added unpleasant floral aromas, flavours and aftertastes.

The lesser of the three evils - the other two being Geelong Bitter and Geelong Lager. This one still has the same insipid quality with unpleasant alcohol flavours coming through. The head is weak, the palate nasty and the whole experience definately not worth having.

This is the same godawful stuff that they sell as Geelong Bitter I'm sure. Either that or my tastebuds just have one receptor for "revolting cat piss". Slightly more evil aroma, and the head doesn't last, hence the dropped points on it's bitter stablemate. I'm now scared to try the draught that I also foolishly bought today.

Awful, awful beer from Geelong south of Melbourne. It looks like a standard lager, perhaps a bit yellowey. There is definate acetate and other unpleasant things in the smell. The taste is a bit like Budweiser mixed with dishwater. Actually make that washing machine water - there's a hint of old smelly socks in there somewhere. Genuinely bad.

Standard amber body and small head. Sweet apple juice aroma which thankfully doesn't carry over to the flavour. There's very little flavour at all, but it was cheap.
