Brown bitter with a tight fine foam, lightly malty-sweet and faintly syrupy nose, watery and light with a little nutty malt and a touch of leafy hop bitterness. Clean but dull.

This is a real blast from the past and I have to say it was looked down on in its day. I have always thought unjustly as many of the beers that were raved about were just bitter brown water in my opinion. I keep going back for this time and again I just don't want it to be discontinued and I'm in Navana every time I drink it. Not as lively as the old cans and bottles used to be but still that distinctive satisfying taste, slightly nutty, mildly hoppy with a pleasing after taste. A time machine in a glass!

Sep 2018 - Served from the keg behind the glowing illuminated bar decoration at Hyde Park, Mutley area of Plymouth. As 'DD Draught Double Diamond'. What a great proper pub to drink a beer like this in. Amber pour with a huge dense head that leaves thick lacing. Aroma is airy when the glass is full, metallic when half full and toffee towards the end. The taste is burnt toffee, a touch watery in the middle with the faintest bitterness to finish. I actually like the burnt toffee flavour quite a bit. Way better than expected given the reputation. John Smith's and Caledonia Best both wish that they were this beer. (4-4-6-4-13=3.1)

Benskins Smooth Bitter
Really surprised to see a keg font with a Benskin's label on it; 5th July 2018, The Brewery Inn, Jackfield Shropshire. I had to try a pint. Clear and clean amber body, the head a cream coloured, creamy textured blanket that gave off some good lacing. Malts first in both the nose and taste with a decent hop bitterness to follow in this easy drinking session Bitter.

From old tasting notes. Lovely copper colored brew with a large foamy beige head and a few medium sized bubbles. Toasted malt nose hints at brewed coffee. Slightly bitter malt flavor with an underlying sourness. Brief, spicy dry finish and aftertaste. Fairly well balanced. Nice flavor.

Ansells Bitter / Best Bitter
In the 80's it was the best bitter around. There was however a remarkable taste differential that made the difference. This bitter had to be served slightly chilled than conention dictated. I found that the pubs that Indians started to own used to serve this bitter colder than traditional "white landlords" pint who believed in bitters served in the typically established rules of room temp or slightly warmer. However we see times have changed and that the immigrants taste particularly the old rules have been thrown out and the traditionalists have failed. In that the taste of Lamb and chicken along with a whole number of other meats that the flavour of the meat has to com through and spices should not be allowed and infact Indians were berrated and riddiculled for employing spices to delicate meats, yet today everyone has to have a curry. This is the case in point with Ansells, if they tried it chilled slightly it would be the best beer in the world.

Vintage tasting at the Kulminator. Brownish bronze colour, dried fruits, spicy notes, very malty, smooth with woodiness in the finish; clearly oxidized as well, which is not surprising considering the age of the tasted sample.

Medium beige lasting head. Clear deep dark red body. Light milky caramelly notes. Dry-sweet milky caramelly taste with roasty wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, flat mouthfeel. Dryish dusty roasty aftertaste with caramelly wooden notes. Ok, but a bit rough and low in flavour. (0.568l cask at The Golden Lion, Whitby.)

Originally rated February 2005. Poured an amber colour with a nice creamy head with very good retention. Lacing was also thick and spider web oriented. Aroma was of biscuits and slightly sweet malt. The taste was also sweet, like mild caramel, and had a little bitter kick at the end. Nice and smooth mouthfeel. This is the closest thing to Boddington, when both are compared from a draught can. Great session brew.

Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) in January 2011. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear dark copper in colour with a thin off white head. Slight maltloaf detected in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a strong maltloaf base with cloves and nutmeg spices evident. fruit notes of raisins, sultanas and orange peel give a Christmas cake flavour. Spicy hops are present in the peppery aftertaste. Malt comes through in the warming marmalade flavour fruity in the mouth. A decent session bitter.

Cask handpull, ’Stripes’, half-time, Nuneaton Town AKA Boro 1-0 Coventry City, 16/01/11. Young lady behind the bar nearly started crying when somebody actually ordered a pint of the real stuff requiring her to pull that mysterious wooden lever on the bar. This was the first pint she’d ever pulled and by the time she’d recruited the manageress to help her, apologised profusely, squirmed with embarrassment for 5 minutes and finally got the beer on the counter I wasn’t remotely bothered it didn’t contain a full pint- the hooter had already sounded to signal the start of the second half, causing me to down the contents of my glass pretty much in one. Notes say, "Wotsits slate sulphur honey slight and clean feared far worse", which sounds like Tetleys/Leeds (Carlsberg UK) at the top of their game. This actually wasn’t too bad at all.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Hazed Amber with slight head. A hint of vinegar on the nose led to the full McCoy within the beer, tart, acidic, disgusting that any sane bar person would allow this to be served, however; we are not talking about sanity in here. Very poor indeed.

I agree 100% with rubbishystuff. I can remember this was a very popular beer about 20years ago, I used to drink it at my family’s bar. So, I couldn’t wait to drink this beer again to rate it, And what a major disappointment! I thought maybe it was me. Did the recipe change? Or the brewery change? Anyways, still ok, but not what I remembered.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Aroma holds some toasty malts and earthy, woody hops. Light sweet flavor, crisp biscuits, with dirty bitterness of earth and grass. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Lots more biscuity malts in the finish, some sharp earth and toast. Not bad.

Half time pint at the Workington game, Stripes Bar, Nuneaton Town FC. Up The Boro. Resolving dusky amber with a nitro blanket. Sour mineral and rubber aroma like rice has been used: cask Bud? Impressions; still Belgian condition mad with white, oak and red wine, caramel and tang (Rodenbach!), apricot jam dabs on metal. Late wafers and honey. Just bizarre. One of the strangest beers I’ve tasted in the last 5 years. Couldn’t finish.

Cask. Can’t remember where, was a random quick half while popping in for a piss on a cross country business trip. Cleared to gold with thick slightly yellowed white head. Nice. Some sweetness, a little dryness. Something a little different that I can’t put my finger on. I liked it though.
