Little Yeoman Spring Ale
Sampled at STL Microfest 2012 - Pours cloudy amber with a small head. The aroma had malty caramel and some prevalent alcohol. The people from the brewery were talking about it being hoppy, but I didn’t get much hops from the aroma. Full body with light soft carbonation. The taste is very sweet and malty with some woody / earthy hops. The finish gets drier and lots of papery taste. Wonder how long ago this one was brewed.

Little Yeoman Double APA
On tap at the St Louis Microfest. I’m guessing the ABV is in the 8-9% range. Pours a hazy gold with no head whatsoever. Has a deep bready aroma with a sweet pale malt taste along with a breadiness and mild hop bitterness. Nice beer.

Little Yeoman Porter
Draft sample from St. Louis Microfest 2011. Pours a mostly clear brown with some gold highlights and a small khaki head. Aroma of toasted malts, toffee, brown sugar, wood, and nuts. Flavor follows suit closely but enhances what the nose brings. Light-bodied, with a toasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. I’d like to get down to this place sometime and check it out, as I’ve never really heard of Cabool before.

Little Yeoman Cream Ale
This beer has evolved over the past few years. These days it’s got some more hair on its chest. Golden, malty and fairly full bodied, with a firm bitterness that actually gets a bit resinous. On the hoppier end of cream ales.

Very nice stout after I let it age in the bottle. Good roast and chocolate aromas. Deep ,dark, oil black, color. Very nice stout flavor. God clean drinkable beer. This is not some massive Imperial stout, just a good, full flavored Ozark stout beer,

In my opinion this is one of the most consistent and finest stouts available anywhere in the country. The beer is now so sought after, that one of Chad’s clients from California (when he’s traveling thru Missouri on business) will detour 100 miles out of his way off Interstate 44 just to pick up a 1/2 barrel to take back home with him. I wish there were more small craft brewers around like Chad’s Little Yeoman Brewery - an American classic that is highly recommended by all who are lucky enough to visit this place.

Ok, final one. Poured a dark but clear brunette colour i guess. Maybe mahogany is the best colour description. Toasty, caramel and some wood notes. But I got to dock it points for that clear redness and the suprisingly light mouthfeel. Hey folks, no hard feelings- i know it gets hot down there so you don’t want a big old porter sitting around warming up the bellies. All three were very enjoyable and i do mean this when i say i got to see this place for myself. Thanks again Brett and Hannah, what a treat! :)

Out of the bottle and into the glass, a little smoother pour this time- Cloudy orange, finger sized fluffhead with some debris floating about. Very astringent- best way i can describe the taste. Nose had me wonderin’ and the the flavours shone right through with bitter, chewy hop notes. Thanks Brett and Hannah :)

This and the other two Little Yeoman brews were sent to me by the very generous Brett and Hannah. After doing a little research on this place, it sure sounds like quite the operation. I almost want to make a special trip down to Missouri to check these guys out. Shared in the company of my buddy pfoxyjohn: Pours a hazey orange colour with a large white head(probably because of my shitty pour). Super creamy-go figure- and noticeably malty. It’s got some grass and herbaceous notes on the palate. I was thinking this, although i didn’t say it out loud- I just might pick this over the Spotted Cow if I weren’t from Wisc. There, I said it!

This beer is a monster! However, it is fragrant, pleasing to the eye in an attractive golden brown color, and its taste is delicious. It goes down smooth and leaves a clean aftertaste. All in all a great beer to drink if you love beer and are tired of drinking the usual run of the mill stuff that you can buy at a liquor store.

STL microfest. Pours orange with a light tan head. The aroma has earthy green hops, caramel malt and some diacetyl. Medium / light body with some subdued carbonatin. The flavor starts with earthy, piny, dirty hops along with some diacetyl. There were some malt traits, but there were minor in comparison to the rest. The finish has lots of dirty hops. Fair IPA.

Little Yeoman Stout
12 oz bottle purchased from the brewery. This has to be the tiniest "brewery" I’ve visited, literally a converted garage run by one person off a rural road in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. But, craft beer is indifferent to geography, working its way into any little crease or crevice it can find in our varied landscape. This stout pours deep, opaque brown, topped by a medium tan head. Aroma is roasty, with molasses, coffee, and chocolate providing complexity. Roasted malt body with burnt caramel, apple skin, molasses, and coffee, an odd yet intriguing medley. I have to think the apple notes are a mistake, but they don’t ruin the beer. Overall, this stout delivers.

Unlabeled bottle purchased from brewery May 2008. Hazy copper orange body, medium buff head. Earthy, herbal, grassy aroma with bready malt notes. Creamy body characterized by medicinal, herbal, leafy hops, bubblegum, and soft breads. Lingering spicy, slightly bitter finish. Tasty.

Clear red brown in color with no real lasting head. Skunky butter malt creamsicle smell (it was as strange as that sounds). Sweet strange, almost sour smell. Thin. not very good. Just weird and watery and off. Very butterscotch like. Not something I look for in beer.

Cloudy orange amber with white head. Smell is malty and kinda boring. Flavor is light cream soda-esque. Mouthfeel is decent - average carbonation, nice creaminess - pretty good. Flavor is creamy.

Pours clear maroonish brown color with a very small head. Somewhat thin looking. Smell is I believe, diacetyl. Buttery as in buttered popcorn and malty. Taste is thin, slightly tart malt, and again a buttery diacetyl flavor. Quite possibley an old bottle, but not certain. Very thin bodied, and unremarkable aside from the flavor as well.

Rich orange amber colored pour with an offwhite head. Looks very nice and uncharacteristic for the style. Smell and taste is creamy and malty predominantly and goes down with a very smooth finish. Moderate body and light to medium carbonation help make this beer feel like what I believe it was going for. Very much like an alcoholic milder flavored cream soda.

Had this beer on 10/2/2002. Aroma is a light malt scent. Color is a deep amber with low carbonation and a nice head. Taste malty and mildly hoppy. Starting with a full medium body that goes down with a sweet malt flavor. Finish has a slight hint of spice and hop flavor back by a mild bitterness. It seems to be a bit rich for a pale.

12 oz. bottle at the brewery in Cabool, Mo. Translucent dark brown with light brown head that lasts a little while. Mild, roasty aroma. Just a touch of chocolate sweetness in the flavor before blossoming into the roasty malts, little espresso, mildly bitter. Somewhat lively, thin despite a stouty grittiness, dryish finish. The flavor is nice but not incredibly strong, and I think this is a good intro porter for someone used to lighter beers. Quaffable but not clean.

I’ve never seen a porter like this. Transparent dark reddish brown with a light head. Malt, raisins, bread yeast noticed in aroma. Also noticed some caramel, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sweet with a clean finish. Like a light chocolate brownie. Low bitterness. Drank this a month after the best by date.

Pours with a rich black body with dark brown edges and a thin dark tan head. Has a dry caramely butterscotch and black olive aroma with some dark fruitiness and lightly roasted malt. Body starts with a good light caramel sweetness and some nice bitter hoppy balance. Has a roasty dark chocolate finish. An enjoyable stout.

Aroma is a slightly roasted chocolate that has an old, dusty twist to it. Rich brown color that still shows light, I can make out the logo on the other side of the glass. Not much of an off-white head and it fades quickly like a soda. Bitter, roasty coffee and chocolate character with a ciggerette smoke finish. The body is pretty thin with high carbonation. Thanks to Doppelganger for this one.

Pours modestly dark red amber. A decent cap of off-white head. Aromas of toast, brown sugar, and a bit of smoke. Hmm. Not sure what to make of this. There is nothing wrong with it, on the contrary, I actually find it very tasty sipping. Maybe they were shooting for the mostly brown malt porters of the 1700s? At any rate, there is a very mild dry roastiness to the flavor, some caramel, but the yeast profile strikes me as very Belgian. Banana and clove esters in the finish. Palate is a bit on the thin side, but a nice toasty dryness. I feel bad rating this very good tasting beer so poorly, but it just isn’t brewed to anything like modern style. An attempt to recreate a vintage porter would be great, and maybe that is what they had in mind. But if that’s what they are shooting for it needs to say so on the label! If I had to group this with something else I had tasted, I would call this a close cousin of New Belgium’s 1554. (Nicer than that particular brew, but in the same vein.)
