3.3 Elkhead The Heir Draft at the Buckley location. Pours jet black with a dense and creamy dark tan head. Big sweet chocolate nose, lots of residual sugars clearly knocking around, just loaded with dense malty caramel nougaty chocolatey candy bar sweetness right from the drop. Creamy thick body, like chocolate milk, with not too much more carbonation. Some mild sweet roast, but mostly heavy chocolate and candy bar presence, mid palate is almost sticky and so is the finish. Thick and heavy and loaded with wet maltiness. Not unpleasant, despite the heavy sugariness, but definitely far to the sweet side of the flavor spectrum. Sunday, December 9, 2012

2.7 Elkhead Blast Zone Dark in color, thin head. Tons of pepper aroma and flavor. This was hot and wow it was in need of some more flavor. The flavor did not need to be so hot and could have been mellowed and would have been much better. Saturday, October 6, 2012

3.7 Elkhead Citronic After 3 weeks in the growler, the juicy citrus blend has become a bit vegetal. lemongrass still comes out. very light bodied, ginger notes, juicy lemon finish. disagree with the fruit beer classification, more like an extra pale accented with the citrus trio. Saturday, August 21, 2010

3.6 Elkhead Royal Black Imperial Stout Rich semisweet chocolately nose, creamy and dark and sweet. oily black, small tan head. Rich and sweet, comes across like a more dense version of their regular stout, though it comes off less than a impy. chocolate lingers. Saturday, August 7, 2010

3.9 Elkhead Black Stag Stout Awesome milk chocolate aroma, some coffee when swirled. jet black, tiny tan head. creamy body, more chocolate, smooth robust peaty body, cocoa everywhere. Saturday, August 7, 2010

3.2 Elkhead Liberty Cap IPA Light hoppy aroma, little spearmint. caramel gold. chewy shortbread, light on the bitterness. light/medium bodied, Leaves me wanting more Saturday, August 7, 2010

3.6 Elkhead Glacier Pale Orange gold, thin persistent head, dry honey cereal aroma, some corn? very summery, amber sweetness, midpalate comes across like it will be heavy, but quickly softens and dries out to a really tasty sessionable pale. Honey throughout tempered by assertive chewy grain. Saturday, August 7, 2010

2.5 Elkhead Back Track Barleywine Honey cereal malt aroma, butterscotch forward. dark gold, tiny head. more sweet buttercream, slick, misses. didn’t finish it, touch of copper in the finish Saturday, August 7, 2010

3.8 Elkhead Royal Black Imperial Stout Chthonic darkness. Rich chocolate liquor nose segues seamlessly into chocolate liquor elixir body that pulses over the palate. Intense chocolate darkness. Rich, deliciously smooth, and deceptively powerful. Sunday, August 1, 2010

2.7 Elkhead Back Track Barleywine Amber-bodied, and rather flat. This beer is also accompanied by a wet sock characteristic. Honeyed malt aroma and flavor. Low overall conventional fruitiness for a barleywine. Musty quality of age. Sweet. Funky hops. A bit off-key for my tastes. Sunday, August 1, 2010

3.1 Elkhead Black Stag Stout Black bodied with an ok head. Rather interesting profile of a stout blended with a root beer. A swirling confusion of flavors and body. Sweet, root beer nose, vanillin and roast barley in the body. Doesn’t quite adequately coalesce. Worth a second tasting. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
3.6 Elkhead ESP Deep root beer body, decent head. Easy molasses and coffee aromatics are also picked up enjoyably in the palate. A medium-bodied and appreciably nuanced porter, perhaps, in part, from the licorice root addition. Sunday, August 1, 2010

3.3 Elkhead Liberty Cap IPA This beer kept me in a state of suspended judgment and extended cogitation. Nice bronzed body with a unique IPA hop profile, probably from the emphasis of the Tettnanger hops among the hop trifecta. Twangy and piny in aroma and flavor with equal parts Swiss Mountain and Buckley, WA country hoedown. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
2.9 Elkhead Extra Amber bodied with a strong caramel and sweet honeyed malt nose. The flavor was a bit unbalanced towards the caramel sweetness. Hops seemed pretty muted. Viscousness gives the impression of a strong amber, but consequently, the body also lacks liveliness. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
3.3 Elkhead Lone Bull Caramel bronzed body. with excellent ESB bitterness profile. Treads between American/English styles. Solid bitter-accented flavor profile. Sessionable. Nice. Sunday, August 1, 2010

2.2 Elkhead Glacier Pale Bronzed brew with a strong wet sock nose and rather damp sock flavor. Really did not like the flavor. Similar to when Crystal hops are overdone. Gotta be the hops as this was an all Glacier brew. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
2.2 Elkhead Buckley Lager Another golden brew that is the lager counterpart to Elk Head’s Gold Ale. Smoothed out hops light-bodied. Pretty non-descript. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
2.1 Elkhead Blast Zone Light bronze with a somewhat wet sock nose, but not much spice. However, the body sizzles with rabid jalapeno heat. Though I tried, I failed to discern any subtler nuances, certainly not cilantro, nor any oak. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
2.1 Elkhead Golden Ale Gold-bodied, light grain and hop nose with a similar flavor. Non-descript, but clean and inoffensive. Ok for the style. Sunday, August 1, 2010
BillKismet |
2.5 Elkhead Citronic Hazed bronze color with a light dash of citrus in the nose. The flavor is a smooth, sparkly lime with a slight malt backbone. Somewhat akin to a Mike’s Hard Lemonade in body profile, but much less sweet. Sunday, August 1, 2010

3.6 Elkhead Blast Zone Growler thanks to Tom. A sweet super peppery flavor, smooth oak, and man is this hot! Rich vegetable notes, super hot peppers. Poured a dark amber color with almost no head. 3.8 Elkhead Back Track Barleywine Growler; thanks Tom!! Pours clear, light copper with trace white head; candy apples, caramel, dark fruit and sweet brown sugar; texture is a little flat and body thin, but drinks very smooth with being cloyingly sweet; quite fruity and dangerously drinkable; need to visit these guys sometime and try this on draft Thursday, April 15, 2010

3.7 Elkhead Back Track Barleywine Growler, courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Poured a clear, deep golde color witha small white head, looks very much like apple juice. The nose is very fruity with big notes of dates, fig, raisin, and grain. Full body with a smooth mouth feel and flat carbonation. Flavor is very sweet and fruity, big notes of dried dark fruit, malt, light brown sugar and caramel. Finishes sweet with warming alcohol. Monday, March 1, 2010

3.9 Elkhead Back Track Barleywine 32oz medicine bottle growler courtesy of THE man, bvc. I owe you Brandon. Thanks for sending this my way. Pours clear deep gold with thin white head. The aroma has thick graininess, apples, dates and raisins as well as a thin layer of musty earthiness. It smells a little like wet dirty date skins. The taste is pretty sweet and becomes fruity with apples, pears and dates and then picking up notes like modest graininess and honey sweetness. Tasty interpretation. Tuesday, February 23, 2010

3.6 Elkhead Lone Elk 32oz medicine bottle, filled on the weekend. Bartender told me it was a new extra hoppy bitter. Light clover notes and biscuit on the nose, some shortbread. Orange/light bronze, sparse white head. Light bodied, more biscuit malt, gentle toast followed by a rich and grassy sharp finish. Monday, February 22, 2010

4 Elkhead Blast Zone Ominous aroma of wet jalapeno and cinnamon. Amber gold, no head from the growler pour. This beast is all flavor. I mean really. Overdone heat is lost on me, somewhere after meeting ’the man’. But I still love the flavors that different peppers provide and I’m impressed when they can be expressed without a white hot heat that distracts and punishes. This beer is awesome. Spice, heat, flavor, are all perfect. It’s everything I want (but didn’t know I needed). Light golden ale base, hodgepodge of jalapeno, anaheim, habanero, etc peppers, provide the right amount of heat and character. Killer. Monday, February 22, 2010

3.4 Elkhead Liberty Cap IPA Growler; thanks to bvc for sharing; pours dirty orange with slight haze and trace white bubbles forming on the edges; fruit juicy hops on the nose; stale malts, lemons, bready; texture is thin with light flavors of stale fruits; raw, dry finish is slightly bitter; like the nose, but flavors come off a little grassy and stale Friday, February 19, 2010

3.2 Elkhead Elkfest Hazy amber. Lots of malt on the nose with some alcohol to make it rough. On the palate, cranberry, strangeness and booze. It comes together anyway. Saturday, February 13, 2010

2.3 Elkhead Punkhead Muddy dull brown. Spicy but sludgey malts. Spicy, dull doughy malts. The spices are random. None of this comes together very well. Monday, February 8, 2010
