J. Bird Honey Rhubarb Mead
Filled a 1L swing top growler when I visited here recently with Skyview. Pours a light golden yellow. Nice honey nose. Slightly tart rhubarb taste that fades into honey. Really nice. Refreshing. Light.

Yum, just yum! This was my first introduction to mead (last year) and it’s just as good as I remembered it! Classic, sweet, refreshing, delicious! The only problem was the trail of bees following us around the festival. Apparently, they love it, too! Edit - had some on another trip to the MN Ren Fest. This time, found some slight lemon notes in it. Wasn’t quite as rich as I remembered it from the previous week. Still one of my favorites, though!

Deliciously sweet with the taste of hibiscus to add some interest. I love mead, and this is one of my favorites! Edit - I think this is my favorite of the J. Bird Winery meads.

The last two bottles I opened had dead bugs in them, and one had what appeared to be a piece of mouse feces floating in it. Obviously quality control is not high on their priority list.

J. Bird Egyptn Mead (Pharaohs Curse)
Light brown color. Aroma with flowers and sugar. Flavor has more flowers and light spice. More honey, and very sweet. Less carbonation than the classic mead, but still surprisingly good for something from a plastic bottle.

J. Bird Cottage Mead
Sampled at OSLO’s tasting thanks to Skyview
Alright, I arrive at OSLO’s tasting only to start with a mead out of a plastic bottle. Immediately, I was wondering what the heck this was, and was thinking we were starting with some kind of swill. Nice touch. Anyways, I digress.

I am by no means a mead expert, but pretty much everyone agreed this was decent. Obviously honey, a vinous quality, and some sour grape. Not bad, and lighter in ABV than many others in this style. Leave it to Skyview to discover these obscure breweries in rural areas, only for us to enjoy. Cheers!

This was a big hit with the tasting, and I think everyone agreed it was a good product, especially for the price. Sweet honey aroma. Flavor is very sweet, with grape, honey, and lots of carbonation. Some peach. With this quality at this price, this guy could sell all he can make.

J. Bird Honey Crisp Apple Wine
OSLO and Guerde’s Memorial Weekend Tasting, 5/23/08. Thanks to Skyview! I had been thinking about making a cider with honey crisp apples since they are my favorite, so I’m glad to have had this chance to taste an example of one. Yellow color. Light rubbing alcohol aroma. The taste gets much better. Slight honey and tart apples. Fairly dry finish. Like taking a bite out of a honey crisp apple, but there’s no juice it’s so dry. Nice!

J. Bird Egyptn Mead (Pharaohs Curse)
OSLO and Guerde’s Memorial Weekend Tasting, 5/23/08. Couresty of Skyview. Light brown, almost pink color. Very floral aroma with a hint of strawberry. That turns into a litlte more than a hint in the flavor. Thick honey. Moderately sweet. Still floral. Didn’t come together as well as their Classic mead, but still very enjoyable.

J. Bird Cottage Mead
OSLO and Guerde’s Memorial Weekend Tasting, 5/23/08. The first one of the night, courtesy of Skyview. Hazy, light gold color. Aroma of clover and syrup. Definitely the clover honey taste. Slightly thin body. Light sugar. Not bad at all, especially for $5 a liter. And in a plastic screwtop container? How can you lose?!

J. Bird Cottage Mead
Poured from a very classy one liter plastic bottle. Appearance of white grape juice. Cinnamon spiced apple and pear aroma. Sticky dandelion residue and some distant funk and mildew. A lovely, delicate floral honey flavor that has a rind of melon and grape tartness trimming the edge of any residual sugar. Palate is lightly syrupy and even a bit cool and refreshing. Calm. Surprisingly soft. Thanks Bob!

J. Bird Honey Crisp Apple Wine
(plastic bottle thanks Skyview!) Pours light gold with some legs sticking to the glass. Aroma is first a smell of rubbing alcohol, none too pleasing. Some smells of apple begin to appear as it warms. Taste is nice and sweet with a crisp apple skin finish. One of the better J Bird’s.

J. Bird Honey Crisp Apple Wine
Sampled at OSLO/Guerde’s Memorial Day tasting. Picked up a single liter plastic bottle from the meadery near Cambridge, Minnesota. Pours a clear light golden apple cider with some thin bubbles in the ring. The first cider that even has some spotty lacing. Aroma of both semi-sweet and tart apples, a touch of Chardonnay wine, some honey and a hint of allspice. Taste is slightly tangy, sweet with some spritzy cider character. Finish is semi-sweet, crisp apple aftertaste without any alcohol bite or finish.

J. Bird Egyptn Mead (Pharaohs Curse)
Picked up a 1 litre plastic bottle from the meadery near Cambridge, Minnesota. Pour a clear salmon rosé mead with some thin bubbles in the glass ring. Aroma of sweet honey, hibiscus floral really comes out compared to the fruity scents in most other regular meads. Taste is just as sweet as the regular Classic Mead but more floral character. Finish is smooth, sweet and more honey finish compared to most other meads I’ve tried. Nice to not have the alcohol bite with this mead.

J. Bird Spiced Apple Wine
Sampled at the winery near Cambridge, Minnesota. Pours a clear light copper colored cider with a clean top. Aroma of sweet apple cider, nutmeg, cinnamon, a touch of clove and some molasses. Taste is semi-sweet, smooth with terrific apple cider flavor with plenty of autumn spices of nutmeg, cinnamon and mincemeat pie filling. Finish also also semi-sweet with a good balance of apple flavors with herbal spice. Great when served warm during the winter months too.

J. Bird The Bloody Mead
Available via sample glass or by the bulk via growler at the winery north of Cambridge, Minnesota. Pours a clear bright reddish pink mead liquid with no bubbles or film top. Aroma of sweet clover honey with semi-sweet elderberries, floral character with a touch of white pepper. Taste is more sweet compared to most other meads with a good balance of semi-sweet berries and pepper spice. Finish has a good balance of sweet honey and berry that would compliment any white bread straight up or toasted. Any alcohol presence is well hidden in this sweet honey wine.
