Bought a 15-pack if cans of this “retired” beer at Winn Dixie for $9.99! Couldn’t wait to try it. Opened one before I even put up the groceries. Very good! Nice, soft mouthfeel, lightly roasted nose and sweet roasted malt flavors. Best deal I’ve gotten on good beer in ages. Brown-amber pour with a quickly fading beige head.

Surprising beer. So we were making a feast of Spanish food yesterday, arroz con pollo, garlicky roast pork, mojo pork chops on the grill, beans, plantains, and so on. Had to go out late morning to get sangria and the plantains, so we started in to drinking the sangria while cooking, and soon enough it was gone - to many complaints we (me) were drinking too fast and there wouldn’t be any left at dinner, so of course I had to go back out and get another. Knowing I was about to jockey the grill I decided to grab some beer at the Winn-Dixie along with the sangria. 6 pack of Guatemalan beer for 5.99? OK let’s try it. Now I’ve had a few Central American lagers in the past, and lets say I’m not expecting much from this beer except something to swill out of the bottle while grilling and eating. So that’s how I start in on this, and wait a minute...clean, light dark malt flavors, balanced and refreshing? Let me get this in a glass. Called by ratebeer a dunkler bock, probably closer to American Dark. Medium brown color, not much head. Hints of caramel but not sweet, more of a dry dark cocoa maltiness. Expertly balanced, with a semi-dry finish, refreshing, no off flavors, hops provide only balance at the finish, no appreciable aromatics. Perfectly enjoyable and drinkable with food, though it does nothing to stand out and feature its ingredients. Only just a little bit on the thin side, but that just made this beer appealing to the non-beer geeks in attendance without detracting from its overall feel.

Trade with Aurelius - thanks! 12 oz bottle - pours a dark chestnut brown with a light eggshell-white head, very little lacing. Aroma is pretty much neutral with light molasses and cola. Flavor has some light chocolate notes, a brief whisper of molasses and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is a tad dull and metallic. About what I expected, not awful.

Standard twistoff longneck, embossed. Decent label. Very dark brew, not much of a tan head -- what’s there is creamy and fine-grained. Apparently clear. Cereal, sweet, somewhat savory aroma with some roast and powder. Sweet (more) and tangy (less), raisiny (slightly), Medium to slightly heavy body, sweet dark fruit aftertaste like dates or prunes. Sweet, per tropical tastes. Virtually no bittering. Not too bad for a $5.99 sixer from Winn Dixie (Magnolia). Guess I’ll go back for the Monte Carlo lager, but it’s in a green bottle.

8/4/13. 12oz bottle from Winn Dixie... $6 for a sixer? Okay! Clear amber red pour with a fizzy tan head that’s gone in an instant. Light caramel, dust, and metal in the aroma. Light flavor, surprisingly not offensive, just a touch of caramel, biscuit, and metal. Lingering sweetness. Not awful, surprisingly.

Monte Carlo Silver State Stout
26-Feb-06 (Growler: Monte Carlo Resort & Casino) In exchange for taking care of my ex-girlfriend’s cat while she was in Vegas, she had to bring me back some beer, so she came back with a $45 growler of this stout from the brewpub in the Monte Carlo. $45 for a growler! It pours black and opaque, even when held up to the sun that is gradually setting over the Pacific Ocean. Medium-dark tan head forms slowly, but vanishes fairly quickly, settling to a wispy film. The nose is all dry roast and yeast, unimaginative and quite ordinary for a brewpub stout. Again, more of the same dry, bitter roast in the flavor, some yeast and herbal hops flavor, a hint of chocolate perhaps, but as for the bitterness, it’s mostly from burnt roast rather than hops. Medium body on each sip, but thins out in the finish leaving kind of a watery impression. Not a bad beer, but in the end, this is pretty much like a boring, average brewpub stout that you’d find in a large chain.

Tap at brewpub. Pours an average yellow with a slightish aroma of off-bubblegum. Grassy, almost hay-like aroma gives way to a taste of the same. Thin, vinegary mouthfeel. Keep rollin’ the dice; this is a loser.

Monte Carlo Silver State Stout
Bottled. Poured medium-deep brown with an explosive cap of tan head.. I’m talkin’ 3/4 of the glass worth. The aroma was soft and dusty with dry chocolate, raw oats, and light dark fruit skins represented.. pleasant enough, but it seemed a touch off. The flavor had dry, somewhat abrasive chocolate and dark fruits on the core surrounded by herbal and spicy notes.. the finish had a drawn-out, ugly, tacky sourness that attached to chocolate that didn’t have much character to it.. kept going downhill the longer I drank it. A bit shy of medium-bodied, and it didn’t feel too good on the palate. Meh.

I had numerous beers at Monte Carlo before the brewpub closed, the only ones I remembered are the Wheat and the Belgian Wit. This is a pretty generic American Wheat. Always served with a lemon. Cloudy. Wheaty with some citrus. Gets a higher rating due to it being made in the casino and served there as well.

On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours a hazy dark copper orange with a wispy-lacing off-white head. Sweet toasty dark caramel malty aroma has some fresh citrusy grapefruity hops. Body starts pretty full and sweet with nice, toasty caramel notes, a touch of light fruit and a smooth bittersweet hoppy finish. A well-balanced and enjoyable barley wine.

Tasted on tap at the 2006 Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest. This barley wine poured a medium brown color. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is brown sugar, malt and citrus. A medium bodied Barley Wine. Malts are caramel and sweet, bready and cookie. Hops are citrusy. The malts really shine in this beer, which highlight the brown sugar and orange flavors. Very smooth tasting, although there is a bit of an alcohol bite to it. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Hap on tap on 12 Dec 06. Wow, I didn’t expect to find any great beer in Las Vegas, but this one shone through. Pours a dark reddish brown. Aroma of fruit (apricot) Taste seems slightly astringent due to 11% alcohol content, then something seedy (like almond) and more dried apricot like fruit flavours. Bitter hops emerge in the end slightly reminicient of cherry cough syrup and citrus. Challenging. Shame that not too many seem to like this style, the barman told me they were going to toss the batcht out in a few days.
