I grew up not liking beer. I was even in a frat in college in the 80s and never really liked beer. Then, when I was in medical school, I spent a month working at a hospital in England and discovered what real beer was. I returned to the states, still a poor student and not finding many places at the time that carried anything other than the mass produced skunk water that passes for beer in much of the US, started to home brew. I gradually backed off on that as more and better micros and specialty beers became available. I had become quite a hophead by the mid 2000s, but now have mellowed a bit and prefer better balanced beers.
