Steve & Karen here . . .
Since we started getting into this about three years ago, we’ve tried over 150 different beers from just about all styles.
In the past year, we started brewing our own beers. We’ve found this hobby to be a great way to learn more in-depth about what’s expected in a style, the problems in getting there, and how to better identify and express just what we’re tasting in the brew. We’ve yet to create a great beer ourselves (although we’re somewhat lucky, we suppose, in that we’re also yet to create a beer that was awful), but from the process we’ve learned a lot.
So, while we’re still far from experts at this point, we’re on the road to becoming fairly knowledgeable. Steve tends to prefer darker, heaver beers (Porters, Stouts, etc.) and Karen is more partial to the lighter varieties (Amber Ales, Wheats, etc.) We aren’t hung up about various brewers (i.e. we won’t make ourselves hate on a brew just because it’s from a mass-market brewer, nor will we fawn over a brew we don’t care for just because everyone else likes it, or the brewery it came from.) We’re still learning to discern, and put into words, some of the more esoteric flavor or aroma elements that some of the more connoisseur-like folks seem to be able to.
The bottom line is that we know what tastes good to us, and what doesn’t; what we like, and what we don’t like overall; and that’s what we hope to share in our ratings here.
And we hope to learn from others!
