| gEUS (17), Linden, Belgium | | April 30, 2012 One of my top places! This bar has everything - the atmosphere of decades ago (when there was waaaay more such bars), friendly service (the two brothers and their mother!) and an incredible selection of lambics and gueuzes, vintage bottles as well. A must see for every Sour/Lambic fan! | | bierkoning (212), La Tropica, Netherlands | | March 5, 2012 Very authentic lambic café filled with locals having a lambic or a kriek after the mass. Great beer list at affordable prices. More to come, promised the landlady. Worth a detour on a sunday morning. | | VirginieLanvin (13), LA MADELEINE, France | | February 6, 2012 Octobre 2011.
| | lachesis (17), St Idesbald, Belgium | | January 23, 2012 Out of this world place for Lambiek and Geuze lovers. The authentic little café looks and feels very cosy, it is heated by a charming old woodstove and the interior has the perfect 1930’s feeling. The ambiance is great and there are always lots of locals and international beertourists from all over the world enjoying a good Geuze, Lambiek, Kriek, Orval, Westmalle ect.... All the beers are served in the correct glassware and at the right temperature. The selection of the Geuzes, Lambiek and Krieks is simply amazing. All the big Geuze names are on the list but they also have lots of very rare and hard to find stuff in the cellar. Plenty of old to very old vintages, simply stuff to dream of. Lots of gems from breweries like Eylenbosch, Timmermans, Cantillon, Girardin, Old Belle Vue, 3 Fonteinen and lots of others. They also offer the rare " Geuze op ’t Kasteel " wish is a very sought after one. This place is fantastic and the people who runs it are the perfect ambassadors for the nectar we call Geuze, Lambiek and Kriek.
Respect for tradition and passion for the local beer is what makes this place so unique. I had a great time and enjoyed some amazing beers. | | cpetrone84 (34), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | January 12, 2012 Hard to find out in the middle of the tiny town. Extremely small quaint feel to it, hops all over the ceiling, solid bottle list but not completely up to date. Almost never open but open enough for us to get in for some morning lambic and hang out with uli talking lambic blending. Fun spot, virtually no one there, some after church crowd of the locals. | | F_radar (30), Paris.Bxl.Geneve, France | | December 21, 2011 Plus musee que bar, pas reelement de selection dans les lambic, on retrouve le meilleur mais surtout le pire. Sans doutes que par un dimanche ensoleille c est agreable. | | Martinus (70), Nijmegen, Netherlands | | December 9, 2011 In dubio here.. I really like going there whenever I’m near Brussels, but one of it’s charms is the small-town atmosphere and lazy Sunday morning feel. So if too many tourists go, this might disappear.
However, if you like Lambic, the place comes highly recommended -I first went in 2008 on the advise of Armand from 3 Fonteinen. Don’t expect extreme coolness or massive beergeekery, just expect to have a pleasant Sunday morning with one of the best selections of ordinary and aged Lambics around, in a Belgian small town setting for very decent prices.
Needless to say, if you don’t like lambic, this might not be your preferred itinerary. | | Rastacouere (581), Montréal, Quebec | | November 8, 2011 The legendary insurance against great thirst has more than a cool name to go along with its fame. Contributing to the myth are the exceptionally restrained opening hours around midday on Sundays only. Set in a bucolic Payottenland small town with brick pathways, it seems to be a mandatory pit stop for locals, cyclists and the occasional family. The setup between the Church is certainly no coincidence, the care for lambics being almost religious in here. Being here is definitely akin to stepping back in time and that adds tremendously to the global experience. For the context, I’d definitely put Grote Dorst on the must-do list of anyone visiting Brussels and that can fit it in the Sunday schedule. Public Transportation does not seem to be too ridiculous a hassle and having your name in the guest book should be seen as a life-time achievement. In terms of pure beer bar criteria, the lambic selection is great, but not quite exhaustive as I’d heard it was. No extinct breweries, but still a fair amount of rarities including their own blends, very rare stuff indeed, but sold at very expensive prices indeed. Some of the rarer lambics were more expensive here than anywhere else we’ve seen them, including Moeder St-Gilles in Brussels. I guess they just want to keep them in supply. The staff was very friendly though, welcoming us with opened hands and making us feel at home, after they made sure we’d signed the guest book. Come once for the experience, but if you can’t, mark it down for the next time and don’t overly regret it. | | MrChopin (89), Baltimore, Maryland | | November 6, 2011 [ Updated November 7, 2011 ] Difficult to find, hard to get to, and open 2% of the week. I enjoyed my time here, but this spot is perhaps too cool for me. Mellow, relaxed morning drinking lambic, the service is peaceful and friendly but without connection. The lambic is awesome, the list fantastic. The atmosphere is amazing, hops hanging all over, cool breeze blowing through the open door into the 20-person cafe, but it is very quiet, almost "dead". A few items on the menu not in stock. Awesome time meeting Uli and talking lambic blending, hanging out enjoying great beer during a relaxed Sunday morning. Of course if you don’t like lambic, you should probably go somewhere else, but you like lambic if you know of this place. | | crockers (14), , Greece | | October 8, 2011 Forget this place if you don’t like lambik! |
