smcolw (8), Wayland, Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | November 15, 2009 When seeking that unusual, hard-to-find beer at even the best beer stores, this is one of the best beer bars I’ve seen. As the name would suggest, there are many, many Belgians and Belgian style beers. But I also had a couple of unusual IPA’s.
The beer list huge, but what is REALLY impressive is the phenomenal selection of glassware--tulip glasses, goblets, pints, etc., etc. Often the beer is served in the glass of the brewer, which is amazing.
I’ve been told the food (particularly the pizza) is very good, which makes sense since half of the place is a restaurant.
There were close to two dozen on-tap offerings in addition to the 100+ bottled beers. A couple of regulars let me know that the on-tap offerings are always changing.
What surprised me the most, though, was the number of beers I haven’t seen or never even heard of. And after 1,450 tastings, I was shocked that this place was within an hour of my home. As Arnold might say, "I’ll be back." | ForenTox (1), worcester, Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | April 12, 2009 Incredible addition to Worcester. Beer selection is incredible and they have recently added a website to check before getting there. The food is local and there are two great cheese plates.
The evening can become expensive compared to other restaurants, but you are getting beer on tap that you can’t elsewhere.
No babies allowed, which limits new parents. | phiconners (3), Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | March 25, 2009 A real gem, meant for true beer lovers. EVERY beer they have is special. Nothing but the best, with an ever changing tap list. Beers are served in the proper glasses. Old Rasputin on nitro brought a tear to my eye. Not a huge food menu, but it’s all locally grown and all very good. | | RomanW70 (12), Providence, Rhode Island | | February 15, 2009 I went here a few weeks ago, just before Chrustmas. Great experience. They had a lot of special Belgian Christmas Ales, and some great American selections, like Southern Tier Choklat and Port Brewing Old Viscocity. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. I had a cheese plate and a ham and cheese sandwich, a beer sampler, dessert, and 3 other beers and my share of the bill was under $40. My only complaint was the service, which while friendly, was very slow, which would have been more than fine, but I had concert tickets that night. Overall, a great experience. | tjw (1), , Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | February 8, 2009 Love this place. Classy but casual atmosphere. The servers are friendly and seem to know their beer. Excellent selection, lots of Belgian choices. There’s always some new selections on tap. Food includes locally grown stuff, good unique pizza. Good desserts also.
| | Schultsc (10), Henderson, Nevada | | January 18, 2009 We discovered this place just a few weeks after it had opened. This place just makes you feel really good inside. Not only do they have a lot of great beers, but the whole focus of the place is on local, organic, sustainable foods. from artisanal charcuterie and cheeses to fresh plums from the owner’s mother’s pack yard, you really have to appreciate the vision behind this remarkable restaurant. I was lucky enough to score a bottle of Founder’s Kentucky Breakfast Stout off of the list--$12! The owner was very generous with us and we wish him and his team the best of luck. We’ll certainly be back next time we’re in Mass. | | ClarkVV (90), Allston, Massachusetts | | January 7, 2009 Wow. Local meats, grass-fed beef, local cheese platters (lots of em!). In all, with a menu that makes it very difficult to choose (everything looks and sounds phenomenal), it almost dosent matter if the beer is good or not. But it is...of course. A varied draught selection with some very rare selections (had a Baladin Nora on draught!) and dedicated Belgian lines, a wonderful, descriptive (and properly grouped) bottle menu, you could easily make a weekend out of the abbey. Fantastic decor, classy, clean and well-lit during the day. Proper temperature on the bottles, via adjustable temperature beer coolers and immaculately clean, fresh beer lines. Alek (sp?) the owner, was very enjoyable to talk to as well. Capped it off with a DD Oerbier Reserva 2007. Will be comin back here soon, that’s for sure. | bbourque1976 (4), Laveen, Arizona does not count - explanation | | December 31, 2008 The beer selection here is amazing! Many to choose from, some as pricey as 50.00 a bottle!
The only issue I have is the place is small and a bit tight. Otherwise, great bar! | Hopduveltommi (9), Holden, Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | August 2, 2008 The Abbey is the second bar to be opened by the owners of the Dive Bar. This one is a bit more upscale and does offer food. The beer selection is outstanding, focusing heavily on Belgians (even hard to find ones) with a good mix of craft Americans and other international notables. The food menu features artisanal breads, cheeses and meats served as cheese slates and sandwiches. The pizzas are exceptional with a fantastic dough for the crusts (the best I’ve ever tasted). The attention to detail in the beer, the food and the establishment is evident. I highly recommend a visit to the Abbey. |
