Appearance: near black, with a super creamy, frothy, dark brown head and generous lacing--beautiful. Aroma: scads of dark chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder, burnt wood, dark molasses, burnt brown sugar, light vanilla, and just a hint of booze. Taste: bitter dark chocolate, a ton of roast coffee, some campfire/woody notes with vanilla and burnt caramel. Finish: smooth, creamy, and with a lingering roasty note that has a tad of smoky whiskey heat underneath it. Notes: Drank like a particularly well-balanced imperial stout. Wonderful. Draught into a growler from Roots Market in Olney, Maryland.

On tap at Meridian Pint. Pours a pitch black color with a small white head. A big sweet smoky whiskey nose, some roasted malts. The flavor is ash, roast, dark chocolates, some heat, smoke. Very nice.

Bottle... Pours black with a small creamy, khaki head. The aroma is nutty and chocolaty with a light note of leather and a hint of lactic acid. Medium-bodied with fizzy and prickly carbonation. This bottle of beer is way infected, but the acidity is clean and fairly sharp. The base beer’s nuttiness and chocolatiness along with the spicy, boozy and toasty notes acquired from time spent in the rye whiskey barrel are merely interesting nuances at this point. Finishes crisp, tangy and roasty with a light kiss of caramel. I’d love to try an uninfected bottle at some point.

Nocturne (4091) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2013
650ml bottle. Viscous black pour with a head that recedes very rapidly. Nice aroma out of the bottle displaying whiskey, oak, toffee, campfire. Tastes of toffee, BBQ sauce, hint of dark fruit and very oaky. Oily mouthfeel. Just doesn’t quite have the correct balance. Think I preferred the regular version.

(Bottle shared by someone at bu11zeye’s tasting, but it wasn’t me.) Black pour with a tan head. The aroma has some oak, chocolate and roasted malt notes. The flavor is similar. I get a lot of watery chocolate notes as well as some dry oak notes and a bit of whiskey. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

22/IV/13 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ Rampkrot (Deurne) - bottled: n/a (2013-357) Thanks to Travlr for sharing the bottle!

Clear very dark brown to black beer, creamy beige to brown head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: dusty, bit sour, chemical, rubbery, caramel, Play Dough. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: very sour start, cranberries, red wine vinegar, lemony, more sourness, bitter as well. Aftertaste: very sour, cranberries, dry, tannins, woody touch. Seriously, what’s up with this?
