For the Christmas and New Year festivities the Gouden Carolus range is now extended to include this seriously heavy strong brown ale. Het Anker are thus rekindling a long lost tradition from the days of yore when they marketed Cardinal Christmas and Anker Christmas.

Pours medium reddish-brown with a quick off-white head. Nose is potent and full of sugars and spices; frankly, it smells like the inside of a Belgian candy shop at Christmas (imagine that). Flavor is roughly the same and bursting with sugary sweetness and seasonal spicing (coriander and nutmeg lead the charge). Finish is quick and a little sticky. Alcohol is well hidden. This is basically a wintertime sweet dessert beer.

It is a great drink. I drank this one in a bar in Lausanne "Bruxelles cafť". It is a strong ale with a dark colour and powerful aroma. The taste is ginger bread and from the tap was perfect.

Probably the best Christmas beer I have had. Nice licorice aroma and taste. Reminds one of Christmas.

(2013 edition) Tap at Fairbar. Nearly black body with a creamy head. Sweet aroma with dried fruit and spices. Sweet taste with medium bitterness. Very rich flavours of spice and fruit. Complex taste yet balanced as it is not too sweet. It hides the alcohol well. Medium body with average carbonation. Smooth texture. Long finish. Incredibly tasty beer! Very drinkable. Certainly the best Christmas beer I have ever had. Mandatory for fans of this style.

750ml bottle @Pikkulintu (thanks mjs & FatPhil). BB 08.10.2011. Deep clear copper color. Small size, beige head, stays. Sweet, caramel, wax, anise in aroma. Sweet, caramel, herbal, bit of licorice and some spices in taste. Spicy caramel in aftertaste. Aged very well. Brilliant brew.
