COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An error in the brewing of DC Brau’s celebrated Double IPA, On the Wings of Armageddon, has led to the development of a new beer. The brew, also a Double IPA, is similar in body and taste to its progenitor while differing immensely in color and hop profile. CEO Brandon Skall expressed disappointment that fans of On the Wings of Armageddon would have to wait another few months for the much sought after beer, but in the same breath noted that he was excited to welcome this new brew to the DC Brau family. "Sometimes you have to embrace blunders," said Skall. "In this case, our mistake lead to something delicious and badass, so while we’re upset about the error in OTWOA brewing, we’re happy it led to Deus Ex Machina."

Deus Ex Machina, taken from the Latin phrase meaning "God from the Machine," weights in at 8.75% ABV and 131 IBUs. It’s hopped with Falconer’s Flight and Columbus varieties, which come together to create a virtual pine forest of super dank, mouth-coating flavors with underlying hints of delicate sugar-coated fruit. The brew-in-error is a beautiful crystal clear golden orange in color.

Growler filled at the brewery on 09/29/12. A hazy amber pour with a big & fluffy beige head that leaves lots of lacing behind. A pungent aroma full of pine trees, grapefruits, zesty citrus rinds, oranges, lemons, and a sizable biscuity/caramel maltiness. Goes down full-bodied and chewy. A slightly toasty biscuity maltiness upfront taste-wise. Some caramel and a rich breadiness follow. Plenty of graininess in the middle. Tangy oranges, bitter grapefruits, and zesty citrus rinds finish things off. Spicy. Some warming alcohol is present throughout. Excellent!

On tap @ the brewery. Poured a cloudy light amber with a large creamy tan head and notable lacing. Aroma includes lemon and orange zest, piney and floral hops, and a hint of honey. Taste is extremely well balanced flavors of caramel malt, citrus, and grass with nice palatable bitterness. Smooth crisp dry finish, enjoyable sticky mouthfeel, and slight alcohol warming. Perfect amount of bitterness for my palate. Impressed enough to take a growler with me back to NY.

Tap at Smoke & Barrel. Pours low haze orange. Weak head. Nose is full on cheesy, nutty, sticky DIPA. Taste is sharper dried orange peel, heavy lemongrass and lemon verbana. Palate is dry, sharp carbonation. Heavy spruce and bark bitterness. Spotty lacing. Not too bad. Mediocre, drinkable DIPA. Not super fresh tasting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Served on draft at the 3rd Annual Top of the Hops, Charlottesville, 9/22/12. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a thin creamy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of citrus, melon and herbal hops with pale malts. The taste is citrus, herbal, resin hops. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.

32oz growler from the brewery, pours a hazy, deep orange with some lacing, creamy white head. Nose is really nice, fruity, vinous, orange, light pine, lightly floral, earthy, honey, light malt, light grapefruit. Flavor is very well balanced, oranges, kaffir lime, light honey, some flower pollen, pine light tar, some malt, very light grapefruit zest. A sort of salty finish that reminds me a bit of a barleywine. Full bodied, lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish.

Growler from the brewery, 09/08/2012. Dark amber orange pour, dense head fades to a nice haze on the surface, oily lacing. Aroma is dark, dank, earthy pine, bitter grapefruit, dusty caramel malts round things out. Taste light orange and grapefruit, bitter pine, light caramel, alcohol. Heavy body, but not too resinous; smooth. Tasty stuff.

Drank this at the Brewery, then picked up a growler of it. Much like the beer it was trying to be, this one poured a relatively clear orange color with a foamy white head. Aroma was pleasant citrus and pine - about like how it should be. Flavor was, well I can see why they didn’t let this become On the Wings of Armageddon. The flavor is a bit heavy on the malt side of things, with a little bit of dankness coming from it but that’s about it. Still, I think it’s good, but certainly not OTWOA.

Thanks, Matt. Served in DC Brau cervoise. Hoppy dank nose with lots of Columbus. Flavor is bitter with touch of alcohol. Dry. Dank throughout.
