COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Christmas Ale is a robust E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter.) This brew has a lovely, dark red/amber color and a rich, full-bodied, malty taste with a slightly roasted undertone. We brew our Christmas Ale to an original gravity of 1064 (about 6.2% alcohol by volume) using only the finest English Pale and Crystal Malts with a touch of Roasted Barley as well. A blend of Clusters, Styrian Goldings, Saaz and Yakima Goldings leaf hops round out this hearty brew. Gritty’s Christmas Ale has no additives, fruits or spices. It’s just a good honest ale, perfect for the season. And to top it all off, it’s already gift-wrapped! (Available on draft, in 22 oz bottles and 5 liter Mini-kegs from November through January)

12 oz. version, which is filtered, is brewed at Shipyard Brewing in Portland; 22 oz. version, which is not filtered and only sold locally, is brewed at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport

UPDATED: FEB 14, 2020 Keg at Gritty McDuff’s Brewery, Portland, ME on 21/03/2008. Called ‘Long Winter’ at the time. A nice, rich and slightly roasty ESB, with a reasonable hop presence.

You’ve heard of comfort food? Well this is comfort beer. A nice robust carmelly taste with a very crisp finish.

* Old rating. 12 Fl.Oz. bottle, best before N 10. Dunkel-dickflüssiges Bier, Gewürze, brauner Zucker, aber nicht sonderlich tief. Nicht sonderlich aromatisch-bitter, echt enttäuschend...

Bottle shared by a friend from notes. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have caramel, brown sugar, nuts, some mild spices and earthy hops. Nothing great, but one of the better beers from these guys my friend was able to share.

355ml bottle. Amber colour. Bready and a little boozy. A solid strong ESB; maybe higher rating than it merits because is is so to my personal taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 5/20/14

Aroma: The aroma is rich and malty, fruity, some caramel, toffee, and brown sugar
Appearance: It pours a clear amber color with a fizzy beige head and occasional lace
Flavor: The flavor, like the nose, is rich and malty as well, pretty sweet, with a light bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-full, it has a fairly thick texture, and a lively carbonation
Overall Impression: This is some pretty solid stuff, and pretty sweet too. The carbonation hurts the drinkability here a bit. Overall, this is a solid example of the style, but not something I see myself seeking out.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a chestnut/copper colored body, small white one finger head, lacing slid quickly into the body. The smell had a sweet subdued caramel, slightly bready. The taste was pretty much the same, but coming through in a bland sort of way. On the palate, it sat at/about a medium, slightly sessionable, creamy aftertaste, sweet bready finish. Overage average for the style, but acutally I liked it and went nicely with some Christmas cookies.

Bottle. Pours coppery with off-white head. Nose is earthy, caramel malt, x-mas spice, with a spiced ESB flavor and medium palate.
