COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one deScription and a crudely scribbled sketch.

I'm glad they have this one out in 12 oz bottles, the bomber was a little much. It's a stronger version of the IPA with a little sharper notes of hops. I like this one with something off the grill.

bottle, old rating from 2016ish - Hazy copper pour, aroma of citrus and resinous hops. The flavor is aggressively bitter with good citrus/resin character. Medium bodied. There's some rye spice flavor under all that hops. Quite good.

Sample at the brewery taproom. Hazy orange-amber color with a medium white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of citrus, hops and rye. Medium body with flavors of citrusy hops, earthy malt and rye. The finish is hoppy up front with a rye malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Amber color. Medium sized, off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt , pine, some minerals and spices . Well balanced taste with strong malty backbone and strong, hoppy bitterness. Tastes almost like DIPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane’s Beer and Wine. Appearance is mild hazy, light brown/dark orange with minimal sparkle, finger-width off-white foamy head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is caramel and rye malts, earthy bitterness, mild candied sugar. Taste is as aroma. Palate is medium bodied with slick texture, soft-to-average carbonation, rye spiciness and mix of malty sweet and hop bitter finish. Overall, malt presence is more reminiscent of APA but is good. Balance is present and rye adds interesting feature, as always.

DATE: July 6, 2016... OCCASION: Greeting Shan after an attempt to score Hamilton tickets...but she is still in good spirits... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint... dark, handsomely gradient amber body with ample bubbles... a frothy, off-white head settles evenly and leaves cloudy ribbons... a fresh, light, toasted bread aroma begins, with the spiciness of rye--pepper, lemon and suntan lotion (?!)--with a heaviness towards the dough... the first sip is invigorating, with a medium-bodied, creamy, thickness that is almost chewable... nutty, toasted, and bready, with a lemony citrus kick... nice peppercorn crackle, with a strong back end finish that lingers.... this beer packs a powerful flavor profile without tipping its hand in terms of ABV... an excellent stand-alone that compliments Smuttynose’s portfolio...
