This was a beer I had planned to bottle share with friends this past week, but time (and participation) ran short, so we opted to not drink this one. That was a tragic decision because it's a stellar Imperial Stout that I am now drinking alone rather than sharing with others. No barrels, no bourbon, no bugs, just your basic Imperial Stout and it's absolutely delicious, one of the best I've had in many years. The moderately intense nose offers aromas of sweet chocolate, coffee, molasses, prunes, dried mushrooms, and decaying logs. Flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, earth, burnt toast, tobacco, prune, smoke, and dried cherries are really something to savor. It's very roasty with medium-strong bitterness, but there's enough sweetness and a touch of acidity to maintain superb balance from start to finish. This is full bodied on the palate, rich, dense, and chewy, with medium carbonation and a bit of ashy dryness in the finish. Nearly black in color and opaque except at the very edges, the beer is topped by a light-brown head that builds to a quarter inch on the pour before settling to a wide ring, leaving a bit of spotty lacing on the glass. Stellar!

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2019 66cl bottle at home, bought at Van Erp Dranken, Groningen. Appearance: pitchblack with medium sized beige head. Aroma: roasted malts, coffee, thyme, some licorice. Taste: pretty high sweetness and high bitterness. Notes of coffee, roasted malts, dark bread, some soy sauce. Palate: medium to full bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. Overall: a classic imperial stout, but I have to say that I find it a bit boring.. Not too much exciting about the taste nor aroma.
