This entry is for the bottled version - for the canned Black Eyed King Imp released in October 2015, please use the Vietnamese Coffee Edition (RateBeer entry 369326)

Two years is a long time. Plus at BrewDog, we measure in dog years, which makes it feel like an eternity.
Back in 2012 we brewed this extra-small-batch prototype and rather than bottle it there and then (which we could have happily done) we locked it away in some gnarly old whisky barrels at the back of our Fraserburgh warehouse.
Before it even went into barrel, this stout had huge chocolate aromas and flavours, from the intense malt bill and cacao nibs, tempered with a roasty bitter espresso character and a spicy hop profile.
Two years in barrel has intensified the rich, round sweet malt flavours, and layered in deep chewy molasses, warming spicy brandy notes, and a liqueur coffee creaminess.
Black Eyed King Imp is an extremely small batch beer, and ultra-limited edition. This beer is worth spending an afternoon over, allowing the flavours to develop and unravel while you discuss philosophy/become one with the universe/ watch an entire box set of your choosing.
Malts: Extra Pale Wheat Cara Crystal Dark Crystal Amber Brown Chocolate Roasted barley
Hops: Magnum Willamette First Gold
Twist: Brewed with cacao nibs and coffee beans

February 3, 2017. Bottle at home, best before June 20, 2024.
Black with a one inch tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, whiskey, vanilla, toffee, Taste is sweet, malty smooth roasted, smooth bitter and a light salty touch. Medium to full bodied, oily texture. Finish is sweet with caramel, vanilla, a touch of dried fruits, light salty licorice, smooth whiskey notes, soft bitter dark chocolate and coffee.
Quite a nice one, initially the oak and whiskey was a bit more pronounced than I would like but as it warmed it grow and was very smooth and balanced for being so intense.

On bottle from Vinmonopolet Aker Brygge. Pitch black color, good brownish foam. High aroma intensity; cocoa, choclate milkshake, vanilla, some Roastiness, leather , lighter dried fruits, cherries and port wine . Full body & complexity. On the sweet side, but balances well. The huge aroma picture makes it a very enjoyable beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottled (backlog). Pitch black colour, mediumsized foamy beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate, some roasted malts, mild cacao as well as some liquorice and mild notes of alcohol. Flavour is liquorice, roasted malts, some chocolate and coffee along with mild ripe fruits and some alcohol to it. Thick and big, and actually rather tasty.

I was just lamenting the disappointing qualities of BrewDog’s top beer when I found this in my tickle trunk. And what a beer it is. Suave, slick, with a slight alcoholic burm this is the beer which should show the righteous the BrewDog potential. Restrained coffee, chocolate, smoothness and awesomeness. Fannytastic.
