Martinsh (2839) - Crewe, Cheshire, ENGLAND - OCT 8, 2019UPDATED: OCT 8, 2019 Pours jet black, with a small beige head. The nose has a wonderful mixture of coffe, chocolate, woodsmoke and coal tar. In the mouth the coffee and chocolate are joined by cough mixture, riga balsam, and liquorice, all rolling around together on the tongue. Some alcoholic burning in the throat, but otherwise the finish is bitter hops. Wonderfully complex – I am in awe of this beer !
bdleedahl (6754) - , NETHERLANDS - OCT 4, 2019UPDATED: OCT 4, 2019 Smokey really strong, intense, a nice smoke, but the underlying malt bill just doesn’t quite keep up. Labietis Riga
DocuDrinks (2433) - Riga, LATVIA - SEP 28, 2019UPDATED: APR 2, 2020 On tap filled to bottle.
Smell- weak, roast, malt.
Foam- thin to medium, bitter, roast feel, dark chocolate, mokka. Head is dark brown, medium sizes, bit too large even.
Appearance- very dark brown, almost black, some few carbonation bubbles.
Taste- roast, alcohol, malt, bitterness, aftertaste more bitter notes, with some caramel and dark chocolate.
Quiet bitter for me and alcohol is quite strong here, not for me.
Gangstergafje (3204) - Rotterdam, NETHERLANDS - SEP 25, 201820-05-2017; Draft; Kaapse Brouwers (bought at Kaapse Brouwers festival, Rotterdam, The Netherlands).
The smell of the beer is lovely. The nice smoke gives bitters and nice savoury aromas. Lovely. There are also some nice porter like aromas. There is some chocolate and coffee. The smell is quite 'dark'. It is full of bitter and nicely salty smoke. There are no clear hop aromas, but this doesn't bother the beer, it is even nice.
The taste of the beer is very good. It is very full. There are lovely toasted malts at first, with some chocolate and coffee and a lovely smoked savoury touch. Than there are nice red fruits and a touch of bitter and sour hops. Very good and perfectly balanced.
The palate is good. It is a full bodied beer, with a smooth texture and medium carbonation. The finish is lovely. Long and full of smoke, malts and a touch of bitter hops. Love it.
jinroh (4531) - ESTONIA - APR 4, 2018Tap @ the source. Pours dark brown with some nice light brown head. Tar in the nose, smoky and quite characterful. Leathery jacket. Taste has more of that smoke and more of that leather. Roast and light malty smoked sourish character there too. Good one, tasty but a tad bit heavy.
wombat23 (5706) - Austin, Texas, USA - DEC 31, 2017Draft at The Alehouse, Zurich. Pours almost black with a creamy beige head. Campfire aroma. Taste is campfire. Intense smokiness. Too much smoke.
Bov (14982) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - OCT 6, 2017draught@the Alehouse - black beer with no head retention; very smoky aroma of ashes, tobacco and dates; fairly sweet, full-bodied, a respectable bitterness and a strong smokyness with more notes of ashes in the finish; quite dry
