Alengrin (11043) - Gent, BELGIUM - APR 23, 2016Bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. Apparently a bottom-fermented (German style) dunkler Bock. Pale yellow beige, moussy, medium thick, well-retaining head over a very dark purplish burgundy brown beer, almost black in general appearance. Aroma of smoked meat, roasted walnut, nut shells, bayleaf, beef stock cubes, a lot of (fairly ’natural’) iron, old leather, dried tree leaves, caramel, fig, black tea but low in fruitiness, indeed revealing we are dealing with a lager here. Sweetish onset (dried fig, caramel) with strong umami edge (cured meat) and light but ’deep’ generic sourishness, spritzy carbo but tingling in a very ’refined’, almost lambrusco-like way, smooth and slick malt body, caramelly and nutty with bittering roasted accent towards the end (but not really coffeeish, more like toasted bread), a tad metallic but still soft and creamy, simply continuing this malt bittersweetness in the finish while smoky and meaty flavors rise up retronasally; there is a late, subdued but effective, earthy hop bitterishness as well, but the malt factor dominates, as can be expected from a beer labelled as ’Bock’. That being said, this is not very typically a dunkler Bock at all: it has a caramelly malt body around which all the rest is centered, but usually a dark Bockbier does not show this smoky umami presence - this is, in all, more a smoked Bock than anything else (think Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock) and in that sense, anything but ordinary, though relatively simple in structure. I do like smoked beers to a certain extent so this is an interesting find, all things considered. Enjoyed it.
woomThomas12 (224) - Falkenberg, SWEDEN - MAR 17, 2016When you pour it up so the beer is dark brown almost a little black, a bit like root beer.
The foam is white and beige come up in time, the foam has its malty flavors.
The sweetness of the malt is there, little dark bread, some chocolate, licorice, bitter orange and a little light coffee notes.
Find some hidden caramel, hay, syrup, fairly muted aromas of this beer.
Personally, I had expected more strong smells.
Then we’ll see what this can do in taste away.
It is malty, with a certain sweetness, but you notice right away at the first sip is all carbonic acid.
Lots of small bubbles of carbonic acid. Carbon dioxide remains in the beer all the time, and is just as intense.
You’ll also find the flavors of rye bread, bitter orange, chocolate, kaffir, and a little caramel.
The flavors in the beer is there, but little in the background, it takes time to find.
