3.5 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus Another of those 'swear I tried this a decade ago' beers. So into a snifter, post haste. Muddy, deep amber body with fine, intermittent carbonation lifting up a good two inches of solid, rocky, bitter white foam - needs to be chewed off! Nose of stewed plums, strawberry conserve, lychee, pear and honey with a hit of alcohol spice. Very herbal on the tongue. Minty with a herbal bitterness akin to rocket or radicchio. Honey on toasted white bread upfront. The fruit of the nose lingers long. The aftertaste bitter and rough. Been a long time since I tried an IPA so rugged and raw. Lacks balance, but drinks with intense fascination. Strawberry conserve flavour builds and builds. Floral, perfume notes are also a little abrasive and lasting. Body is medium light. Carbonation lively upfront with a softer, oily finish. Alcohol offers warmth and depth. This is a great ale. Unsure of age, but it hasn't softened or been yeast bitten. Different, original!!! 3.8 BrewBoys Ace of Spades On tap at Scratch for Weekend of Darkness. Pours near black with light tan head, aroma of choc and roast malt. Taste is rich for a 5.9%er, with a bit more bitterness it might class as a foreign export stout. Sunday, July 29, 2018

4 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus Rating from old records: on tap in Adelaide, 2014. Pours hazy orange w/light beige head, fruity & herbal hop aroma, big taste (thus the name) pushing into IPA territory. Sunday, December 31, 2017

3.6 BrewBoys King Brown A nice light way to start the night, an easy going Brown Ale, pours a deep dark brown colour with a large frothy light brown head, caramel is strong on the nose with a light floral aroma, flavour was mainly the malt caramel characteristic in this medium bodied ale. 3.7 BrewBoys Seeing Double Deep brown pour with a quickly dissipating tan head. Boozy, whisky, dark fruit and a little smoke on the nose. Taste is toffee, a bit of smoke, a bit of booze, some dried fruit. No idea how old this bottle is (was in a mixed pack with no date on the bottle) - seems to have a few years on it at least, and it’s shaped up well Saturday, May 6, 2017

3.4 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus Nice beer but "insanely dry-hopped" must be a bit overstated. Has a nice zesty flavour to it and the aromas are nicely fruity, but it lacks body and overall flavour intensity - it’s just too watered down. What flavour there is is actually really nice - hoppy, zesty, a little spicy and earthy with a nice and rather long bitter and grassy finish. Nice but I at 3.8% this just lasks body. Very drinkable though (obviously!) Tuesday, April 4, 2017

3.5 BrewBoys Seeing Double Old bottle at home. Whiskey, berries, toffee, spices. Big malt flavour, very sweet and slightly bitter and tart. No carbonation. Deep, clear red brown colour. Very short sweet and doughy finish. Good for a cold day watching footy. Saturday, October 1, 2016

3.6 BrewBoys Maiden Ale A nice pale ale without being outstanding. It had nice taste and a pleasant beer to drink. Bree boys have a great celler door which is well worth visiting if in Adelaide. Thursday, September 15, 2016

4.1 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus A very hoppy beer, which the barman told me before i ordered. Also relatively strong in alcohol content. Nice dark Amber colour. If you like very hoppy beers, this is a nice example. Thursday, September 15, 2016

1.6 BrewBoys Maiden Ale Deep cloudy brown with sediment. No head and little carbonation. Good malt character. Caramel, citrus, spruce, earth. Mild sweet and very little bitterness. Overall quite bland, with a watery mouthfeel. Yeasty, weak aftertaste. Monday, September 5, 2016

3.9 BrewBoys Seeing Double Poured an opaque brown (nearly black) with a very slight tawny edge tint and a one-to two-finger light tan dense foam head that retained very well and laced OK. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, soft subtle roasted coffee, caramel, toffee and port/red wine; quite sweet overall; alcohol well hidden. Taste of sweet caramel malts with a very slight peaty/smoky after-taste; nice pleasant low bitterness; alcohol well hidden. Medium body. Clean, very smooth, soft and syrupy with a sweetish finish. Very nice. One to sip and savour. Sunday, July 31, 2016

3.7 BrewBoys Ace of Spades Dark black in colour with a thick, light brown head. Visible carbonation bubbling away. Very subtle nose - slight coffee and vanilla presence. Really soft and easy to drink, well roasted coffee, some vanilla and cocoa as well. A very gentle mouth feel - no assault on the senses, but a suprisingly pleasent and delicate affair. 3.3 BrewBoys King Brown A bit light for me. Caramel strong on nose. A bit nutty and toasty. Hops at end but I just found it a bit too easy in the middle. 650ml, 4.2%, 2.1std drks. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone Saturday, July 25, 2015

4.1 BrewBoys King Brown Taking into account its relatively low ABV, this is very tasty ale, with complex malt flavours and a chocolate and coffee finish. A great session ale. On tap at the Wheaty. Friday, February 27, 2015

3.5 BrewBoys Maiden Ale On tap at Kings Head Hotel Adelaide which serves beers brewed in South Australia only and is therefore recommended for tickers. This one pours copper-amber with medium sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges), stone fruits, and a touch of piney resin. Taste is hop driven with a decent fruity long bitterness on top of the biscuity malts. Lightish mouthfeel and carbonation making for an easy session. I was reminded more of a ESB rather than an APA. 3.1 BrewBoys Ace of Spades Dark brown, overactive head. Light fudgey chocolate with some coffee accents lending roast. Straightforward roast and light chocolate, with some softer notes that aren’t quite vanilla. Ok stout, a bit too yeasty/active and the effect on the body isn’t positive. 4.4 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus From a 650ml bottle on 20/8/2013. Pours a cloudy, very dark golden with big lasting head. Has a beautiful aroma, with masses of fruity and floral notes, some honey, and a dash of piney hops. The flavour is dominated by sweet citrus and tropical fruit (orange, mandarin, tangerine and mango), with some honey and marmalade, set off against a light caramel malt background. It finishes off with a big, lingering hop bite, with grapefruit notes quite prominent. Has a fullish body and quite lively carbonation. This is a really impressive, beautifully balanced drop. Much more IPA than APA in style, this is just outstanding - the best Australian brew I’ve tried to date. Tuesday, August 20, 2013

3.6 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus Pours copper with a large, lasting head. Nose shows prominent lychee, spicy hops, sweet clean malt and soft confectionery notes. Pretty aggressive flavours, some soft fruit notes but the piny, resinous and grapefruit hops quickly take over. Finishes with a sharp, aggressive, metallic bitterness. Carbonation seems pretty full-on. Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Creamy texture with medium carbonation. Moderately sweet with darkish bread, stone and some tropical fruit. quite peppery and piney at the fairly bitter finish. Hearty but lightened towards the finish, leaving a mouthful of spicy and zesty flavours. Complete. Thursday, July 4, 2013

3.9 BrewBoys Hoppapotamus Bottle from Mane Liquor. Surprisingly great stuff. A darker pour than expected. Heavy amber with a big off white head. Nose shows signs of rye. Light spice and earthy characteristics with heavy citrus and peach hoppage. Citrus and peach come through with heavy bitterness and spice to balance it out. Very sessionable. Very balanced. Creamy bitterness. Great beer Saturday, March 30, 2013
