Oakwell Dark Mild
Leeds Beer Festival. Now brewed by Stancill in Sheffield, this has been renamed Stancill Tom’s Mild but is the same dark mild brew that the defunct Oakwell made. It’s very dark with a thick creamy head. There’s more sweetness than roasted malt but both are evident.

Nut brown. Roasty malt aroma. Remarkably dry with light-medium body. Resiny hops along with roasty malt dominates.

Oakwell Dark Mild
27th Oct 2012: wolfed a hand-pulled half pint of this while the rest on the mini-bus finished their beers (CAMRA Survey Trip): I’d already had a pint of Barnsley Bitter and Oakwell Senior, but others had said how tasty the Mild was. So I had no choice but to have a quick half did I? Deep Ruby/Brown body with a full crown of biege coloured foam: looked good. The nose and taste go hand in hand: semi-sweet chocolate malts lead the way with a pleasant hop finish, other tones come and go,sadly I can’t really remember what they were: I was drinking at pace so the written notes were done on the mini bus as we drove to the next pub and I obviously didn’t put down enough! I scored it highly in my notes, so it must have had a good body strength and overall character.

Hand-pulled pint in the Oakwell Breweries only pub in Shropshire: The Seven Stars at Cold hatton on 27th Oct 2012 during a local CAMRA surveying trip. Light copper body with a thin white covering of foam. No great aroma from this: I got hints of fruity, floral hops and mild esters of malts, but I had to dig deep for them. The actual taste was leaning towards the malts a little more than the bittering hops, fairly bland and uninteresting compared to the Barnsley Bitter and the Mild on offer. The body seemed thin and lacked depth of flavour: refreshing enough but I expected more after having a pint of the breweries 3.8% ABV Barnsley Bitter first. It may well be named after the breweries founder Guy Senior, but I bet he wouldn’t be too pleased to know his name is on this beer!

Oakwell Barnsley Bitter
Saturday 27th Oct 2012: local CAMRA surveying trip. The first pub we hit is the only Oakwell Brewery owned place in Shropshire, The Seven Stars, in a hamlet called Cold Hatton (strange pub to have as your only outpost in a county). My first pint was of this, and I really enjoyed it. Hand-pulled into a UK sleeve, the body was a good brown, deep amber with red hints: on top an off-white head of foaming bubbles that stayed the distance and also left heavy lacing on my glass. The aroma was malty and semi-sweet, as was the taste. Mild toffee flavours are joined by fruitiness and a nutty note before the dry, bitter finish, in this well balanced brew. More to this than the Oakwell Senior.

Hand pulled at the Longstop, Leicester. Light ginger colour, with slim head and smooth lacing. Very standard Bitter, but good balance - no off notes. Nut, tangy malt. Pleasant, but certainly not essential.

Oakwell Lager
Keg at The Ship Inn, Leicester. Pale gold, no heed. A firmer, slightly sharper and bitterer taste than the Acorn. Alright, but the hard taste, the temp and the fuzziness make it slightly difficult to drink.

Cask gravity at GBBF 2010. Very deep ruby, thin beige head. Bit of Burton snatch on aroma, bit vegetal in mouth. Touchy of sulphur lasts all way through. Yes a mild, but then what makes this different to brown water?

Oakwell Dark Mild
Cask, Magpie, Carlisle. A superb black, sweet, fruity mild. Off white head, nutty, lovely sweet malt aftertaste and a fresh pleasantly yeasty aroma. This has bags of flavour and a great chocolate finish, with just a hint of dryness right at the very end. For me, the perfect crossover between Batemans and Bathams equally fine milds. Superb and worthy of a very high rating....

Oakwell Lager
Bright and yellowy just like the Acorn, with the same sourish and distinctly nutty aroma. Strange, vegetal and sulphurous. Faintly grassy hops, a hint of lemon and a clinging sweet buttery note to finish. Oatmeal and vanilla. Lightweight, but pretty well made and preferable to 99% of the cornflake fizz marketed as ’lager’ in the UK.

Oakwell Acorn Lager
The Shakespeare’s Head, Leics. Oddly hazelnutty aroma with added butter and vanilla. Light and sourish with hints of lemon, grassy hops, peanut and rubber. The nuttiness on the nose is intense for such a pale beer, and a little offputting. Bright yellow. Bit of a weird one, but refreshing, and ok for a lager.
