Tap @ Malthouse. Tried the 2015 version. I don't usually enjoy hops as a dominant flavour but this was at such a level that it really shines. Right up there with my favorite Strong ales and wouldn't want to miss the chance to have it again. Too bad I was on work time and couldn't get another.

Powerful resiny aroma of pine, orange pulp, caramel malts and some sort of dark fruit. The sweet malt base give it a seriously boozy kick that threaten to overwhelm the massive load of hops. But they don’t and result is rich and resiny and more than a little dangerous.

500mL bottle from Slowbeer. 14% alc/vol - scary! Clear deep golden body, holds a fluffy white head. Aroma is resiny, brutal, somewhat thick, unrelenting before the tongue gets involved - candy orange, resiny herbs, woody sap, biscuity malts, rich caramels. It is really hard to believe this is a 14% beer - whilst it’s thick, rich, syrupy, it might perhaps allude to 9-10%, no burn, no astringency. Resin - it’s like hop oil, not that I know what that is like, but it’s oily - oozy citrus, wood sap, tropical fruits,. It just lingers for soooooo long, and you kinda realise how strong it is after a while... Anyway, just really well balanced for a HUGE hop monster!

Crikey. This is now 14% ABV and you are well aware of that from the first sip. But before then, the glorious aroma of fruit & pine, plus rich amber colour tell you this is a biggie. Usually I rate IPAs with higher aroma than taste scores, but this is taste-dominant. The aroma is massive, but the taste... Try this at least once before you die, but speaking of that, make sure you are not driving

(2015) bottle 14% ABV - like an all action hero fight going on , it’s all measured and in control, no one taste over another, it’s just brilliant (2014)This is a lot sweeter than you could expect it to be. The alcohol astringent isn’t shy either and you know you’re getting smashed on this. But it’s decent and dangerously quaffable, and I may have to sit in a quiet place and pretend not to be slurring my words whilst smiling to myself in enjoyment .

A full bodied and reasonably balanced brew. Probably too strong for enthusiastic consumption. There are many other examples of the style to try - and quite a few of them are better (to my taste).

Tap Hashigo: This was immense. Huge nose, great fruit punch flavours - lots of apricot and peach - and a lovely dry bitterness. This is the best hoppy beer of 2013.

Going off notes. Tap at The Malthouse. Lovely dark copper pour with superb lacing left behind from a dwindling, fluffy white head. Nose is dried apricots, hop resin and citric fruits. Not as bitter as the huge IBU would indicate. Rather tame and sessionable, dangerously sessionable. Loads of stone fruits and citric hoppage behind a piney background. Lengthy bitterness. Good beer

Cock and Bull Monks Habit
On tap,Newmarket C/B Pours reddy/brown with firm head. Aroma of mango, passionfruit, grapefruit, high alcohols and caramel. Taste of grapefruit, mango, some green dry hop resin, a caramel malt background, balanced of with a firm bitterness and slight residual malt sugar. Overall a very nice beer, not really a IPA as the malt and residual malt sweetness balances the hops.

Cock and Bull Dark Star
Tap @ Cock and Bull - Newmarket. Black pour with a tan head leaving moderate lace. Slight metallic, dark roast and almond nose. Medium body and carbonation, about right for a porter. Coffee, cocoa, almonds and burnt toast. Slight smokiness and oiliness in the finish, something I really like in a porter. Definitely on the dry, roasty, bitter side, but very good and highly sessionable.

Tap @ Cock & Bull. Clear, light amber pour with a short, off-white head leaving moderate lace. Pine, fruit and alcohol nose (with a hint of sulphur as it warms). Medium body and carbonation. Pineapple, spruce, toast, cardboard, sugar, grapefruit. Not as lightweight in the finish as many NZ IPAs and PAs, but still a bit wimpy.

Cock and Bull Fuggles
On handpump at C&B, Ellerslie in Auckland. A medium strength, eponomously hopped ale, trying hard - and largely succeeding - to be a tradtional English bitter. My usual pint at this, my local when in Auckland. Better than usual today, served warmer than normal which was welcome and exposed a more delicate malt flavour than I’ve noticed before. Perhaps it was a fresh cask on a Sunday lunchtime.

On tap at Malthouse. Pours a nice deep red/brown, thin head. Aroma has plenty of citrusy hops, some dark fruit.
Flavour is quite bitter, grapefruity hops with a bit of toasted malt, thin body. A good hoppy beer, nothing Belgian about it though, so the name is confusing.

Limburg Czechmate Pilsner
Bottle. Clear golden with an average white head. Nice subtle tropical fruit hop aroma with underlying clean grains. Unfortunately there is less hop presence in the flavour than in the aroma, however the finish has a nice bitterness appropriate to the style. Not bad, but there are much finer pilseners to be had in this beautiful country.

I’m with grandmaster a dirty blonde is more interesting....a dirty buxom blonde would be the ultimate i guess.... enough dribble i tried this at the hamilton cock and bull and really liked it.....no hold on i didn’t really like it because i don’t like belgium witbier but i thought it was a good beer for the style. the usual thing to do is compare it with hoegaarden and this stood up really well to it....i actually liked this a bit better, had more body and a little bit of sweetness to it that i enjoyed

Cock and Bull Dirty Blonde Belgian Wit
Aroma of cloves, corrinander, orange and a slight yeast autolysis. Appearance is cloudy white/orange. The flavour is well balanced with stronge corrinander/cloves with a orange background and witbier yeast fermentation profile. Overall a very good example, I just feel it needs some more acidity to finish it off.

Cock and Bull Rhinefire Oktoberfest Lager
Draught at the Newmarket Cock & Bull (Auckland), pours a clear and bright amber gold. Metallic on the nose, but a touch of sweet malt. Biscuity malt on the palate, with that metallicness agan. The thin finish carries through quite a bit of alcohol, along with being quite sweet. I give this an OK.

Draught at the Newmarket Cock & Bull (Auckland), gold with a filmy head. Not really much of an aroma at all, just some earthy malt coming through. A mellow earthy malt palate, with sweet caramal. Some dryish hops in the finish. Typical NZ draught style.

Tried on tap at the Malthouse. Pours golden colour with little head, served a wee bit cold i fancy. Didn’t initially think much of this but as it warmed the flavours and nose developed into a really nice brew, has a good malt nuttiness to it and quite a dry finish...possibly a bit too bitter for the style but i don’t care!

Fresh cask on for the first of four pints. Nice light brown / dark amber color. Good off white head that dissipated quite quickly. Strangely the head on the second one lasted a lot longer. Bitterness balanced the caramel malt flavor nicely. Good hop flavor and gentle aroma too. Could only just pick up on the hint of nuttiness and there was a whisper of a fruit flavor I couldn’t quite distinguish. By the fourth pint it had grown on me nicely. Could have had a few more, but it’s a bit too heavy for an all nighter. First couple of mouth fulls may have been spoiled by the Fullers ESB I’d just polished off.

Draught (on a couple of occassions), a bright gold with a thick white head. An earthy malt aroma, lemony, a little mettalic. Earthy malt, somewhat soapy, though the palate is close to being crisp and clean. I don’t really enjoy this.
