Fleurac Black Bear Beer (Quadruple Black IPA)

750mL bottle (courtesy of Headbanger) poured into a Tulip at 47°. Color is black with high carbonation giving it a fluffy tan head. Aroma is sweet with roasted notes, toffee and fruit. It has a medium body with a light fizzy mouthfeel. Flavor comes in with mild roasted malt, just a hint of fruit and hop spice with a nice bitterness. In the aftertaste the roasted turns to a mild coffee with a hint of chocolate. Overall this is a tasty complex brew, but I feel the carbonation is a little high and the flavors would pop more if it was a touch lower.

Fleurac la Rouge
Bottle, BBE05 . Pours dark brown, crealy white head. Smell is spiced, bit sweet, somewhat metallic. Taste is sharp, very spiced, dry, harsh, sweet, not much clear signs of age, just overkill spiced, to a point it’s undrinkable. better fresh? Perhaps, but I expect tastes of spices to go down over time, so my fear would be big when drinking this fresh !

French stout, it sounds a bit contradictory, but the brewery was apparently founded by a Belgian. Light beige, creamy, thinnish, not very stable foam, colour a very dark burgundy, not entirely black yet. Lots of cooked red cabbage aroma (DMS) apart from black coffee, iron, bitter chocolate, quite strong liquorice (effectively applied here), candied dates. Dried fruits in the mouth, metallic with rather flat carbonation and therefore rather thin body, chocolatey and lots of liquorice, toasted malts, some roasted bitterness, quite short finish. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled too much by big imperial stouts but I cannot say I really enjoyed this.
