Joet’s post about RB’s fastest growth ever got me thinking: how fast has Ratebeer grown over time?
Thankfully, Ratebeer’s new users are sequentially labeled with their user number, and join dates are publicly exposed, making fetching the data pretty trivial. I wrote a simple bash script to pull every 1000 users, parse out their join date, and then graphed the resulting data.
The Y axis is the total amount of users, and the X axis the date from user #1000 until today. Each vertical line is a data point, which, when we have enough, help form an accurate graph.
Takeaways:
* User growth rate was extremely flat from 2006 through 2012
* Growth cranked up hardcore at the start of 2012
* ...and then in mid 2012, briefly went through the roof. Probably a bug?
* The growth rate then flattened again, where it stayed for 4 years until the ABInBev acquisition was announced. As they say, all advertising is good advertising: even bad news
---
Of course, this is only total registered number of users, which is not a particularly meaningful metric. It would be possible to estimate WAP (weekly active participants) and MAP (monthly) over time via various accessible feeds, but it would be enormously taxing on Ratebeer’s servers, requiring millions of requests, something Joe probably doesn’t want me to do.

A lot of Active users, including myself Joined in 2012. I wonder why there was such a lift that year in not only quantity of users, but quality? Great work by the way.

As an IT-guy and statistics lover (aren’t we all), I find this post awesome. :-)

As I said. Quality.

Thanks for this. I asked Joe to post graphs and/or raw numbers in that thread so I’m glad someone else has gone to the effort to do this. I absolutely love looking at stuff like this, I find it fascinating.

2012 was sheer quality. Amazing to have someone like me in that year.
